Addictive Board Game Pandemic Coming To Xbox One and Nintendo Switch

One of the greatest cooperative board games made in the last decade has to be Pandemic by Z-Man games.

Unlike traditional board games like Monopoly, Risk, or the game of Life where players do battle with one another to win, Pandemic is a cooperative game where all the players either win or lose based on the choices they make. The goal? Stop a global pandemic from breaking out and killing all of humanity.

But now, this very same board game experience is coming to Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

It appears that the digital version will stay true to the million-selling board game version's core identity - cooperative play against the disease rather than combative play.

Pandemic will be released on August 1st for $19.99, offering cooperative play for up to 5 players with couch coop modes as well for those who want to play locally. From the developer -

Acting as disease-fighting specialists, players engage in a race against time to contain four epidemics threatening to wipe out different regions on the globe. Players can choose one of the seven specialist roles: contingency planner, dispatcher, medic, scientist, researcher, operations expert, or quarantine specialist. Each role features unique abilities that players will need to combine as efficiently as possible in order to overcome the 5 difficulty levels.

While there isn't much out there in terms of gameplay, the expectation is it will look and feel a lot like the boardgame now (without the pesky setup and teardown) which could have some added advantages for avid board game players. I myself could see a desire to play Pandemic via a TV rather than let my cat jump on the table and knock everything over, or my toddler reaching for pieces on the table.

All in all, it looks like a pretty smart idea and we're interested to see how Pandemic translates to Xbox and Nintendo Switch devices. Nintendo has also made announcements to bring other games like Carcassone and Settlers of Catan to the Switch platform, so we may see more of this in the future.
