Operator

Module Description

During the siege and looting carried out by the Reunion Movement, Operator Absinthe tried several times to contact the garrison outside the city for support. She also attempted to call her father, whose whereabouts were unknown, but never received a response, only the murmur of pale despair. It was like holding a candle in the dark, unable to see the way forward or find the way back, but still persistently believing in the false, icy hope she gripped.
According to Operator Absinthe's recollection, she thought she heard her father's voice from her communication device just as she was about to fall unconscious. She sprung up in surprise and luckily avoided Reunion forces passing by. However, the message was too short for her to even confirm whether it was a real voice or a hallucination brought on by fear, hunger, and despair.

After coming to Rhodes Island, Operator Absinthe persists in attempting to contact her father through the communication device when there is no one around, as if he is silently listening to the other end.
'Dad, are you there? They took me to a place called Rhodes Island. They say it's safe here... I hope it's true.'
'Dinner was tough today, but I still ate a lot.'
'I started training at Rhodes Island, with Instructor Dobermann... Err, she's my teacher. She says I'm doing well, but... I know she's just encouraging me to keep going...'
'I'm going on missions with other operators here soon, but I don't know how well I'll do...'
'I noticed my pants looked short today. I think I'm getting taller, Dad.'
'Dad, are you listening...?'
...

'Regarding the phenomenon of hearing her father's voice from the communication device, Operator Absinthe comes close to bringing it up to the medical operators during her psychological treatments. With different memory fragments overlapping and pieced together, and according to information collected later in Chernobog, our assessment is that this communication may have really occurred, but it very likely did not come from Absinthe's father's comm. Rather, it was a Reunion transmission. When the mob located and assaulted the location where the remaining civilian police officers had taken refuge, Absinthe's father's voice was picked up in the ensuing chaos.'
'As for why an Ursus police communicator received a Reunion signal, the most likely explanation is channel interference, calling for no further inquiry.'
'The above medical record will be expunged today.'
