干员斥罪在报到时说自己是为了弥补自己曾经的过失而来,这份过失的具体内容,她描述为自己曾身不由己地做了很多背叛法律正义的事。
根据我们对叙拉古事件的调查了解,斥罪原本为叙拉古的城邦法官,背后有着贝洛内家族的支持。但与其他有着家族支持的法官不同的是,斥罪并不完全以贝洛内家族的意志判决案件,她也会宣判贝洛内家族成员的罪行——这在叙拉古几乎是一件不可能的事。从与干员伺夜并非上下属,更像是姐弟的相处状态来看,贝洛内家或许并不是一个常规意义上的叙拉古家族。不过我们目前对贝洛内家的上任家主并没有过多的认知,只能留待日后与斥罪或是伺夜交流时再多了解一二。
在斥罪加入罗德岛,进入法务部后,人事部干员有些担心她是否能良好地适应罗德岛的工作内容。毕竟斥罪曾明确展示出法律正义不可侵犯的态度,而罗德岛由于与多个国家和地区有交易往来,时常会涉及一些现有法律的灰色地带。但据人事部干员一段时间的观察,斥罪并没有对罗德岛的一部分业务产生误解,反而能很快地理解我们的真实目的,她也并没有与一些和自己处理业务手段不同的干员产生冲突,而是很有默契地互相帮助。或许对于这些从事法律工作的人来说,不论就职后曾不得已地做过什么,现在使用着什么样的手段,他们一开始的理想总是相同的:捍卫法律应存的正义。

在叙拉古,各个家族掌握着分属于他们的移动城市,以此延伸出特殊的司法体系:在这里并没有警察系统,法官作为西西里夫人的意志代言者,负责维护叙拉古的社会治安。
但实际上,家族总是会处理好很多事情:基于案件中涉及人员所属家族的不同,家族会以不同程度介入法官对于一起案件的宣判。更普遍的情况则是案件其实根本不会被递到法官面前,法官们只会得知一些事件已经被摆平,或是需要他们私下摆平。
在过去,很多认识她的人在提到拉维妮娅法官,也就是斥罪时,会说她“公正”。这在叙拉古是一个少见的词。“公正”对于一位叙拉古的法官来说,代表这位法官可能会在某一天突然消失,或者失去自己的某一部分肢体,成为提醒其他法官的一个警告。
斥罪没有这样的结局,不过,她也并不认同自己是“公正的”这一点。
她告诉我们,自己在贝洛内家的帮助下成为一名法官,在她成为法官之初,贝洛内家的上任家主曾向她许诺过一个理想化的未来,“在那时,我可以真正地推行法律的正义。”贝洛内家族的背景让斥罪似乎有了更多的自由,但她也因此更加痛苦,因为这种来自家族的正义,在斥罪看来,从根本上就是不对的。

这是她或许能真正意义上地践行正义的一个开端。新城市对很多人有着不同的意义,家族以此为利益争夺的目标,平民似乎无权去在乎自己究竟要活在何处。身为一个法官,她得到了西西里夫人的某种认可,这可能仍然算是站在某种权力的肩膀上推行正义,但这一次她也算是真正地拥有了足够多的自由,也不得不面对更多她之前没来得及去想的事:
当叙拉古的所有人都习惯于法院服务家族时,她身为一名法官,应该做什么?
从出生到学习再到成为一名法官,即便她认为这一套司法体系有着太多不合理的地方,但在叙拉古长大的她也并没有亲身体会、接受过其他国家的法律系统,她希望叙拉古不再受家族限制,但离开了家族的叙拉古司法系统,还剩下什么?
而面对这样一座新的城市,即使她与伺夜他们有着志同道合的人一起努力,事情也并非如理想那般轻易。相比于摧毁一套系统,新建一套总是难得多,更何况,他们也并没能做到真正地让叙拉古脱离开家族的控制,那么,他们怎样建立新的秩序?
仅仅是一名法官,斥罪明白自己并没有那么大的能力,新秩序的建立也并非一件简单的事,她这几年所学和所经历的完全不足以支撑她去建立出一套新的、能让人们接受的司法体系。在这个时候,斥罪忽然觉得自己好像理解了老贝纳尔多一直以来的行为:一个没有家族的叙拉古对于老贝纳尔多来说是一个疯狂的理想,一座拥有真正正义的新城市对自己来说也是一个疯狂的理想,老贝纳尔多为此献出了生命,她能做到哪一步呢?
在一次醉酒之后,斥罪少见地和博士主动提起了贝洛内家的上任家主——老贝纳尔多。在斥罪的描述里,那是一个她好像很了解,但又好像从来没了解过的男人,明明给了她希望,却在最后也没选择信任她,她现在只能看着他留下来的那个希望,并为此付出自己的下半生将它实现,却不能有和他一起看到这个希望成真的那一天。
“我恨他,但是,我有多恨他,我就有多......”在一些含糊不清的话语中,斥罪最终这么说,博士把她送回了宿舍。
