Meta Shift: Gogeta & Broly

Overview

The 2020 is coming to an end, and just like the real world, Dragon Ball Legend’s ecosystem has been constantly subject of drastic changes and unexpected outcomes. LF Broly and LF Gogeta complete this year’s puzzle, which has been largely dominated by Zenkai Fighters, the real nightmare of all DBL players throughout 2020.

The Zenkais are just overwhelmingly strong thanks to their massive stats and overloaded Unique Abilities. They’re so strong, even most of the new Fighters released in the last quarter of 2020 pale in comparison. Everybody’s hope prior to the Christmas Step Up Banners was that these new highly anticipated Fighters could finally put an end to this interminable dominion.

So, are Broly and Gogeta, but also the new DBS:Broly Frieza that got introduced too, strong enough to fulfill players’ hopes? Let’s find it out.

Effects On The Meta

Sagas Warriors

All the new Fighters have the Sagas Warrios Tag, so it’s only fitting to start with this one. LF Gogeta and LF Broly are a powerful Offensive duo. Gogeta can reach its peak Offensively very early, Broly is pretty good right off the bat and has an incredibly high ceiling depending on how long he manages to stay on the field while rampaging, but fundamentally both share the same weakness: low durability.

Also, they’re not really versatile, as other than inflicting Damage they don’t provide much else to the Team. Frieza, on the other hand, is a much more complete Fighter, as he’s a great Offensive Fighter with fantastic utility - mostly thanks to his obnoxious Debuffs -. Sadly the Red spot on the Team is already covered by Zenkai 7 SP Super Gogeta RED, which is superior to Frieza since he’s stronger Offensively and much Tankier as well.

So, The LF Fighters complete the Team alongside Zenkai Gogeta, who is pretty clearly the staple of the Team. Zenkai 7 SP LSSJ Broly GRN is still an important Fighter for the Team, as he’s by far the most durable Fighter out of the main 4, which means he’s essential against the very oppressive Blue Color Counter Teams in the Meta at the moment.

Saiyan

Both the new LF Fighters are Saiyans, but one of them fits much better than the other with other staple Fighters of this Tag: LF Broly.

The reason is that he pairs really well with Zenkai 7 SP SSJ Bardock BLU. An important part of Broly’s kit relies on whether he’s able to force a switch with a combo or not, since if he does then he gains great Offensive momentum - Vanish regain, Arts Draw Speed, and more Offensive Buffs -. Without Support, he’s frankly not able to pull it off consistently, especially against Zenkai Fighters that can Tank his hits thanks to their high Defenses.

However, alongside Bardock, he receives enough Offensive Support to threaten pretty much every opponent right off the bat. In a Blue Color Counter setup, his direct competitor is Zenkai 7 SP Angry Goku BLU, a generally better Fighter, but Broly has something over him, like more immediate Offensive capabilities and the fact he starts off as Super Saiyan, unlike “Nameku”, which is better both for him and SSJ Bardock. Still, Zenkai 7 Goku is the more reliable Fighter in general, so he’s the better pick, but Saiyan is the best team for Broly.

Fusion Warrior

SP SSB Gogeta YEL, just like SP SSB Vegito BLU and SP SSJ2 Kefla GRN, is a glass cannon, which means they share the same weaknesses and strengths. He offers some other interesting tools to the Team, like anti-Strike Cover and anti-Special Cover mechanics, but overall he’s not a breath of fresh air for the Team.

He replaces SP Vegito YEL, since the latter hasn’t been that good for a while, but overall he doesn’t fix any of Fusion Warrior’s issues, namely lack of durability, healing, and Supportive Effects in general.

Still, the Team is still pretty deadly Offensively, and the new Gogeta making it more versatile Color-wheel wise is definitely an improvement.

Lineage of Evil

Unlike the LF Fighters, SP FF Frieza RED truly improves his Team. Truthfully, Lineage of Evil has been in a bad state since the 2nd Anniversary now, so anything would’ve worked wonders for the Team, but the new Frieza is legitimately a very good Fighter, and a great basis for the present and the future. In fact, he doesn’t really have any blatant weakness, and he’s an incredibly versatile Fighter that can disrupt opponent’s plans both through Debuffs and Damage. In particular, his Paralysis Effects.

The interesting thing is what Team should be built around him. Zenkai 7 SP FF Cooler BLU , SP Metal Cooler GRN, and the new Frieza is probably the best possible Core, but EX Frieza BLU is the best possible partner for the new entry. Against Teams that lack Green Fighters, an improbable Blue-Blue-Red combination can even be used.

Powerful Opponent

Mainly, SP SSJ Broly: Full Power BLU Buffs this Tag with his Z-Ability, but sadly it’s not even close to be its best Team. It’s mostly a work in progress, as right now it’s just a mix of decent/great Fighters that don’t really have any particular synergy together, and it’s also lacking in terms of Ability Bonus.

If you want to use him here, Jiren, Demon King Piccolo, and Perfect Cell make good partners for him, but don’t expect groundbreaking outcomes.

Should You Pull?

This is a difficult one, largely because these new Fighters represented some of the most appreciated characters in the Dragon Ball universe. The reality is, Gogeta and Broly don’t shake the Meta in the slightest. LF Fighters in general have clear weaknesses compared to Fighters like Zenkais, especially since they’re so hard to pull, so in most cases the stat difference is just brutal.

Also, the Step Up mechanics this time around are straight up worse than usual, and FIller wise only Broly’s are good - SP Goku Black GRN and SP Perfect Cell RED might legitimately be the best Fighters on both Banners. The advice here is to save if you care about Meta, and even if you don’t but you really care about the new Fighters, be wary that the odds of getting them are very low.
