Nightmare on Pearl Street

Pearlhorizon's use in PvE is limited since most of her kit doesn't work on bosses. On the other hand, in PvP Arena Offense, she can actually be a bit of a surprise for some opponents. In particular, she is a decent budget choice for countering Seaside Bellona, who is a very dominant hero in the current PvE meta.

In this strategy, Pearlhorizon's goal is to Sleep the most important enemy target (i.e., Seaside Bellona) and then one-shot them with her S3. To do this, she needs as much Spd and Effectiveness as she can get her claws on. After this, stack Atk% and Crit Damage on her so she can hit as hard as possible. (She doesn't need Crit Chance. Her attacks will count as critical hits anyway, since she'll be hitting a Sleeping target.)

There are two ways to enable Pearlhorizon's nuke. She either needs someone else to apply Sleep for her (i.e., Rima or Tenebria) or she needs a CR-pusher who can give her an extra turn after she uses her S2 (i.e., Auxiliary Lots).

  • If you're using another Sleeper, you don't need as much Effectiveness on Pearlhorizon. In this case, give her an Immunity set (to prevent a faster enemy from disabling her) and the Kal'adra Artifact to maximize her damage output.
  • If you're using a CR-pusher, then making her S2 hit the right target is essential. In this case, give her a Hit set and the Cursed Compass Artifact to maximize her chance of applying Sleep on her first turn.

Team

Core

This is an example of building Pearlhorizon with another Sleeper in the party. Rima needs to be built with more Spd and Effectiveness than Pearlhorizon, and Blood Blade Karin MUST be slower than everyone else in the party. It's preferable if Vivian can move before Pearlhorizon for the purposes of applying her buff, but it's not strictly necessary.

Ideally:

  1. Whenever Vivian can move, she uses her S3 to buff the team's Atk.
  2. Rima moves first and puts the key target (i.e., Seaside Bellona) to Sleep with her S2.
  3. Pearlhorizon moves next and destroys the Sleeping target with her S3. If they manage to survive, they will be Stunned for a turn regardless.
  4. Blood Blade Karin moves after Seaside Bellona has been disposed of and after the Atk buff has been set, allowing her to cleave through the enemy team in one swell foop.

NOTE 1: Blood Blade Karin can be replaced with any strong cleaver (Vildred, Celestial Mercedes, etc.) and Vivian can be replaced by any AOE Atk buffer (Helga, Rose, etc.)

NOTE 2: This strategy WILL be shut down by Immunity sets. You'd need Basar or some other AOE buff stripper to work around that, which would mean replacing your AOE Atk buffer. (Vivian can kind of serve as Atk buffer and cleaver for this strategy, so you could conceivably replace BBK with Basar instead, but it does slow down your cleave if Vivian has to do both jobs, which gives the enemy team time to recover.)

Secondary

This is an example of building Pearlhorizon with CR-push in mind so she can take two turns to set up on and then nuke her target. The tricky part with this strategy is that Pearlhorizon and Auxiliary Lots BOTH need to move before any enemies can move, but Pearlhorizon also needs to move BEFORE Auxiliary Lots. To accomplish this, we include Judith, who is the fastest AOE CR-pusher in the game, so that she can give both units a boost at the start of the fight.

Ideally:

  1. Judith moves first and CR-buffs the party with her S3.
  2. Pearlhorizon moves second and uses her S2 to put the enemy team to Sleep.
  3. Auxiliary Lots moves third. Use his S2 (NOT his S3, or you'll wake up the enemy team!) on Pearlhorizon to give her an extra turn.
  4. Pearlhorizon moves again and nukes the most important enemy while they're still Sleeping with her S3. If they survive, they will still be Stunned for a turn, giving you time to deal with them.
  5. This clears the way for Celestial Mercedes to launch her AOE nukes without fear.

NOTE 1: Celestial Mercedes can be replaced by any strong cleaver (Ludwig, Blood Blade Karin, etc.)

NOTE 2: As with the previous strategy (and pretty much any strategy involving Pearlhorizon, honestly), note that this WILL be shut down by Immunity sets. You'd need an AOE buff stripper like Basar to counter that, which would probably mean replacing Judith and making it harder to outrun enemy teams.

Analysis

Overview

Pearlhorizon has access to two nasty debuffs in Stun and Sleep, and she also has a neat little combo where her S3 does a truly phenomenal amount of percent health damage when her target is asleep. The fact that she can cause Sleep to all enemies at once with her S2 can come in handy as well. Unfortunately, Pearlhorizon's damage is unimpressive unless she can pull off her Sleep combo, and due to the low duration on her Sleep ailment (as well as other factors) she is often unable to use it when it matters. When the stars align and she successfully combos, her damage is spectacular, but most of the time, she's not going to see her full potential.

Strengths

Crazy Percent Damage

When Pearlhorizon strikes a Sleeping opponent with her Awakened S3, she does a massive amount of damage (which is guaranteed to be a critical hit because the target is Sleeping) and then burns off 20% of their maximum HP, no questions asked. That's by far the most percentage damage of any hero in Epic Seven.

AOE Sleep

Sleep is a powerful tool that guarantees critical hits on Sleeping targets, and Pearlhorizon has the only AOE Sleep skill in the entire game. Combine this with a strong cleaver like Vildred or Blood Blade Karin for the best results.

Other Debuffs

In addition to AOE Sleep, Pearlhorizon can afflict single targets with Hit chance debuff or Stun. A Hit chance debuff can mitigate a lot of damage for your team over time, and Stun is always a potent tool.

Fast

Pearlhorizon has quite a high base Spd stat. This is very important, because her kit relies on her taking multiple actions in a very short span of time.

Weaknesses

Relies Too Much on Sleep

Pearlhorizon relies on applying Sleep in order to reach her full potential. Unfortunately, there are many problems with this strategy:

  • Pearlhorizon can only apply Sleep with her S2, which has (at max Skill Enhancement) a 50% chance of landing and lasts for only 1 turn. 50% is not very high, and the fact it only lasts for 1 turn means that Pearlhorizon has to act twice before her enemy acts once or the Sleep is lost.
  • Sleep is broken when a Sleeping target is attacked. This means that no other unit can attack the Sleeping target before Pearlhorizon gets her second action, or the Sleep is lost.
  • All bosses are immune to Sleep. Bosses are usually the best targets for percentage damage, since their maximum HP is so high, but Pearlhorizon cannot trigger her percentage damage against bosses because they are immune to Sleep.
  • PvP is full of units who are fast and often have cleansing or Immunity-setting abilities. This makes it hard to set Sleep in the first place with only a 50% base chance, and it makes it even harder to act twice before the Sleep wears off.

In most occasions where AOE Sleep can be usefulĀ -- i.e., huge waves of trash mobs in the Automaton Tower -- single-target percentage damage is not as useful, and in most situations where percentage damage is useful, Sleep is not an option. This makes using Pearlhorizon effectively a very difficult prospect.

Ineffective Against Bosses

Not only is Pearlhorizon's Sleep and therefore her percentage damage nullified against bosses, but bosses are also immune to being Stunned. This means that Pearlhorizon's only real use against PvE bosses of any kind is applying her Hit chance debuff, which is a very common debuff that many other units would be able to apply better.
