Carrot studied tirelessly to pass the notorious Magic Research Department exam and became a professional researcher. She thought things would finally get better once she passed, but instead, she feels like she has gotten even busier.

Builds

Mahou Shoujo Carrot-chan

This build is a general all-rounded bruiser that utilizes a balance of flat HP, Def%, Atk%, Effectiveness, and Speed. The numbers you're shooting for are:

  • 5000 Health
  • 1000 Attack
  • 1100 Defense
  • As much Speed as possible
  • 55 Effectiveness

Because the build requires these numbers and also a Speed set, it is a very high-end build that probably only endgame players will be able to make.

Using her relatively fast speed for a Mage and the self-CR-push on her S1, this build overcomes Researcher Carrot's low base damage by taking more turns. If Researcher Carrot is using her S1 over and over, getting 10% CR each time, she will be taking a lot of turns, giving her a lot of chances to trigger her detonation.

Because this build isn't so much about doing direct damage as it is about detonating other allies' Burns, this Researcher Carrot doesn't need a direct damage Artifact like Kal'adra. She can take a totem Artifact like Spooky Solayu Stories or Rainbow Scale instead, or use Sira-Ren or Abyssal Crown to throw extra debuffs at her enemies. Alternately, you can make her more survivable for her bruiser role by giving her Chatty or Grail of Blood.

Team

Core

This team utilizes cleanses (from Dingo and Lilias) and heals (from Mascot Hazel) to prevent Researcher Carrot from getting disabled. It also uses two of Researcher Carrot's favorite heroes in Epic Seven.

  • Dingo might be Researcher Carrot's best friend (does that make him the animal sidekick?) He brings Burn synergy as well as cooldown reduction, and his S3 boosts Critical Hit Chance, a stat Researcher Carrot usually doesn't have room to build on her gear. Furthermore, because Dingo takes so many actions (by chaining his S1 into his S2), he generates a lot of Souls, which Researcher Carrot can then Soulburn on her S1 for guaranteed detonation.
  • Lilias is another perfect teammate for Researcher Carrot. She can use the Aurius Artifact to soak damage for the team, her S3 uses Researcher Carrot's high Atk to determine damage, and her S1 guarantees Dual Attacks, giving Researcher Carrot more chances to detonate the team's Burns.

While the team isn't usually as strong as it sounds on paper due to the unreliability of Dingo's S1-to-S2 chain and Researcher Carrot's detonation, it is still fun and strong enough to push through most Adventure content.

Reactive Armor

This build is mostly for fun, but sometimes it is surprisingly effective. It uses a Counter set to trigger Researcher Carrot's S1 and, hopefully, her Burn detonation. The enemy will attack Researcher Carrot, activate her Flame Barrier, and get Burned, and then Researcher Carrot counters and detonates them.

Doing this requires a high amount of Effectiveness, Atk%, and flat Health to ensure that Burn is applied with her S2; that when it gets detonated, it was worth the effort; and most of all, that Researcher Carrot doesn't die before this happens.

  • For reference, the base chance of a counterattack happening AND triggering the detonate is about a 5% chance, and it deals a simple 0.95+0.7 burn damage.

Artifacts should be used to help her get turns, as that restocks her passive. Labyrinth Cube is preferred, though a Butterfly Mandolin could work if you're feeling especially lucky. You could also try Abyssal Crown, as it disables enemies and gives Researcher Carrot more time to work (of course, while the enemy is Stunned, they're not attacking and getting countered, either).

Analysis

Overview

Epic Seven's magical girl Carrot -- who was forgotten after release due to underwhelming AOE and a useless passive -- has upgraded her transformation pen at last. She's coming back strong with a new style and a new S3, ready to prove her worth in fighting evil by moonlight, daylight, or any other kind of inbound extraterrestrial illumination.

In a nutshell, Researcher Carrot is a versatile Fire Mage who is no longer just a budget AOE, but a budget Mage bruiser. With a Speed debuff, a personal shield, and a unique Burn detonation mechanic, she is the linchpin for any Burn-focused team, able to perform in PvP or PvE to great effect. While she is not a must-have hero, she introduces many interesting combinations and fun strategies to Epic Seven gameplay.

Strengths

AOE Damage

Researcher Carrot's S3 is an AOE explosion that also causes two Burn effects. The attack itself does decent AOE damage, and the leftover Burns do far more, especially if combined with effects such as Kal'adra, Specter Tenebria's S3, or Researcher Carrot's S1 detonation.

Detonating Burns

One of the big issues with Burn as an ailment is that, if it can be cleansed before the duration expires naturally, a significant amount of damage is lost. Researcher Carrot fixes this problem by detonating the Burns with her S1 before they can be cleansed, dealing their full damage immediately. This works with her own Burns, of course, but it also works on any other Burn-focused ally, such as Aramintha, Khawana, or Dingo. Stacking Burns on an enemy who gets more dangerous at low health and then detonating them for an instant-kill can be a great way to handle nasty targets like Blood Blade Karin.

Passive Burns/ Shields

When attacked, Researcher Carrot automatically triggers her Flame Barrier passive, giving herself a barrier and her enemy a Burn. In a way, she heals herself and damages her attacker every time she is attacked. This is especially helpful for spreading out even more Burns for her to take advantage of with her S1.

Deceptively Durable

Researcher Carrot doesn't look that survivable on paper, but part of her Skill Tree includes a massive 25% damage reduction when she is at full HP. This synergizes with barriers (including her own), as Researcher Carrot can maintain full health against weak attacks. She also has a chance to cleanse one debuff from herself when triggering her Flame Barrier, making it harder to kill her.

Weaknesses

Detonate is Unreliable

The biggest problem with Researcher Carrot is that her detonation mechanic is unreliable. She can increase the chance with Skill Enhancement, her Skill Tree, and (most of all) by Soulburning her S1 to guarantee the effect. However, if you don't have 10 Souls to burn, you can't guarantee Researcher Carrot's most interesting mechanic, and that's a big drawback.

Weak Stats

3★ stats are still a problem. Even after investing Runes into her Skill Tree, Researcher Carrot’s HP is still very low for her role as a bruiser, and her Atk is a little too low to be a primary DPS.

Relies on Debuffs

Researcher Carrot relies on lots of stacks of Burns to deal worthwhile damage. This forces the player to build other Burn-focused heroes around Researcher Carrot, leaving the team as a whole vulnerable to debuff-countering mechanics. While detonating Burns can be helpful in working around cleansing skills, it doesn't help with the Immunity buff, which prevents Burns from being applied in the first place.
