Builds

Heavenfall: PvP

In this build, the goal is to have Ludwig go last and nuke the enemy Heroes for immense damage. To do this, you need a strong cleave setup with a few key types of heroes:

  • An Invincibility buffer, so Ludwig doesn't have to use his first turn on his S2.
  • At least one CR-pusher (two is even better).
  • At least one damage buffer. An Attack buff is obvious, but a Crit Chance buff can also be useful. An AOE Defense Breaker also serves this purpose.

Forming Ludwig into the best version of himself can be hard since what he requires is so specific when compared to other cleave Heroes, but when you meet these conditions his damage will soar.

Gear

Generally the majority of Ludwig's build should be focused into Atk%, Crit Chance, and Crit Damage substats. Speed is less important for him since you want the CR boosters to push him forward enough that he will still go before other enemy Heroes.

The best way to maximize Ludwig's S3 cleave is with a Destruction set and a Critical set. However, this relies on Ludwig having enough Crit Chance to crit reliably. If you don't have good crit gear for him, an Attack set will be more reliable. (An Attack set also has the benefit of strengthening his S3 barrier in case anything survives his opening salvo.)

Artifacts

Being a Mage, Ludwig is able to carry Tagehel's Ancient Book for himself. Soulburning his S3 at the start of an Arena fight is going to be the biggest damage increase he can get and relieves the pressure to have another Mage to carry the Book for him.

That being said, if you DO have another Mage in the party to carry the Book, Ludwig can use an Artifact with more tangible benefits, like Abyssal Crown, Exorcist's Tonfa, or Necro & Undine. If you can manage to fit a fast AOE debuffer into your party composition (especially an AOE Defense Break from Bellona or Tywin), Ludwig can even use Kal'adra and turn his S3 up to face-melting levels of DPS.

Team

Core

A composition like this will cover all the bases Ludwig needs:

  • Our Invincibility buffer is Blaze Dingo. Blaze Dingo's S3 gives Invincibility, allowing Ludwig to cleave immediately.
  • The CR-pusher is Schuri. Schuri gives his team CR every time he crits. Also, he can equip Infinity Basket to give Ludwig a chance to cut in with his S1 for more CR, or Rosa Hargana so Schuri himself has a chance to cut in on an ally's turn and give the entire team more CR.
  • Our damage buffers are Tywin and Blaze Dingo. Tywin causes AOE Defense Break, and Blaze Dingo's S3 grants an Attack buff on top of its Invincibility.

The strategy here is simple. Schuri CR-pushes the team so Blaze Dingo can buff Ludwig and Tywin can Defense Break the enemies. (Normally you'd Soulburn Tywin's S3 so he can buff your cleaver afterwards. However, in this team, Blaze Dingo is buffing Ludwig, so you can save the Souls for Ludwig instead.) Ludwig then calls the full moon and destroys everything. See? Simple!

Secondary

A more accessible, if less high-performing, version of the team above.

  • The Invincibility buffer here is Achates. Her S2 is the vehicle of Invincibility here.
  • Our CR-pushers are Righteous Thief Roozid and Rose. Both have AOE CR-push on their S3s.
  • The damage buffer here is Rose. Her S3 is both a CR-push and an AOE Attack buff.

Simply lead with Righteous Thief Roozid's S3 into Rose's S3. Have Achates use her S2 on Ludwig, then let Ludwig work his magic.

Analysis

Overview

In addition to being the last living Nocturne, Ludwig is an Earth Mage with immense burst potential. His incredibly high base Attack paired with Call of the Full Moon (S3) makes him a perfect hero for cleave compositions. While not often used in PvE content, Ludwig can still hold his own in both Banshee 11 and other areas. His kit also offers a combination of surprising tankiness, buff stealing, and a Stun on top of the already-strong defense penetration.

Strengths

S3 Loaded with Power

Call of the Full Moon (S3) is a powerful skill. On its own, it penetrates 20% of the enemies' Defense. If Ludwig has Invincibility, the amount of defense penetrated increases dramatically, and if Ludwig inflicts a critical hit with the skill, he also gets a barrier proportional to his total Attack. To top it off, the skill only has a 4-turn cooldown and can be Soulburned to further increase its damage. This skill is what makes Ludwig such a monstrous cleave Hero in PvP.

Massive S2 Nuke (+Stun)

The power of Ludwig's S3 is staggering, but don't underestimate his S2 either. Though it is single-target and does not ignore Defense, Ludwig's S2 has enormous damage multipliers (very scary with his base Attack), grants Ludwig Invincibility (setting up for his S3), and even Stuns its target (assuming they survive, of course!)

Buff Thief

One of Ludwig's more unique niches is the ability to steal buffs using his S1. Stealing buffs is a two-for-one deal: not only does Ludwig gain the benefit of the buff, but it functionally dispels the buff from the enemy who previously had it. Especially in PvP, where buffs are both very common and very powerful, stealing buffs can be a major boon.

Self CR-Push

In addition to stealing buffs, Ludwig's S1 increases his own CR when used if Ludwig is already buffed. This is a very powerful combination when used alongside heroes who can pull Ludwig into guaranteed Dual Attacks, like Kitty Clarissa, Ras, or Lilias, as each Dual Attack S1 can help push Ludwig closer to his next turn.

High Base Attack

As of January 2020, there is only one other hero in Epic Seven with a higher base Attack stat than Ludwig (Gunther) and one hero who is tied with Ludwig (fellow Leo Mage Melissa). In addition to making each of his skills into an ICBM strike, this makes the barrier on his S3 very meaty and hard to break through.

Weaknesses

Buff-Reliant

So much of Ludwig's power depends on buffs. The CR-push of his S1 and the damage of his S3 both rely on buffs to unlock their full potential. The S3 in particular is tricky, since Invincible is hard to come by. If Ludwig's S2 is on cooldown, he must rely on heroes like Achates or Elena to provide Invincibility for him. Keeping buffs on Ludwig in sync with his skills requires a carefully built party and close attention to cooldowns.

Requires Setup

Unlike a cleaver like Blood Blade Karin or Vildred, who can just jump into a fight and start slashing away, Ludwig needs time to get ready. Without the extra defense penetration he gets from an Invincibility buff, Ludwig's S3 is actually rather underwhelming. In addition to the regular buffs any cleaver wants (i.e., Attack Up), he also needs to set up Invincibility before he can nuke. He can do it himself with his S2, but that means waiting an extra turn before you strike, slowing your offense considerably.

Countered by Dispel/ Unbuffable

Because Ludwig is so reliant on buffs to pull his weight, enemies who can dispel his buffs or (even worse) inflict Unbuffable are hard-counters to his strategy. He's also in trouble if the ally he is relying upon for his Invincibility or other buffs gets Stunned, Silenced, or outright killed.
