Gear

Zeno has relatively strict requirements for his gear, due to the disparate nature of his kit. He demands HP%, since his damage scales off it and he needs to survive for a long time in a battle to reach his full potential. He also requires Effectiveness for his Stuns and Speed in order to get as many Stuns off as possible (and to get his AOE Silence off early in a battle). The rest of his substats should be dedicated to a mix of Atk% (further increasing his damage and his Bleeds) and Def% (for more survivability).

In most cases, a Speed set is the best gear set for Zeno, since it helps him to move first in a PvP match and Silence the enemy team, giving you a huge advantage. However, if you have some strong CR-push (i.e., Righteous Thief Roozid) or a better opening move (like an AOE Stun), then you may want to give Zeno a Counter set, which plays into his paradigm of a tanky disruptor quite nicely. Either way, his other set should be a Health set, to maximize his damage and survivability in one slot.

It can be tempting to try and build Zeno full DPS, with lots of Atk% and crit stats and perhaps a Rage gear set, but Zeno's skill multipliers are actually very low. Atk% mostly benefits his Bleeds, not his direct damage, and his HP scaling is a little too low to make building DPS worthwhile. Focus instead on using him as a tanky disruptor.

Artifacts

A lot of Mage Artifacts have come out since Zeno was released, and several can be rather beneficial for his role. The two most obvious are Abyssal Crown and Sira-Ren, which double down on his ailment infliction in very appealing ways. However, another great option is Iela Violin. Since Zeno is already built to punish buff-heavy teams, giving him the ability to strip buffs directly can be very useful.

If you're running Zeno with a Counter set, a niche possibility is the Bloody Rose, which greatly increases Zeno's Effectiveness on single-target attacks. The Bloody Rose doesn't let Zeno cause AOE Stuns on his S3 like Abyssal Crown would, but it dramatically increases his reliability for disabling single targets, which in some cases might be even more useful.

Team

Core

This is a bizarre little team that works together to strangle the enemy's ability to play against it. Zeno and Maid Chloe both Stun with their S1s, taking away most of the enemy's action economy. Yet even when the enemy team can act, what can they do? Both Zeno and Hurado become stronger if the enemy uses non-attack skills. However, Seaside Bellona punishes the enemy for deciding to attack. The possibility of Counter sets on Zeno, Rosa Hargana on Seaside Bellona, and random Silences from Hurado make it even more teeth-gnashingly difficult to confront this team setup. And of course, if anybody dies, Maid Chloe is there to bring them back to life.

Analysis

Overview

Zeno is a weird hero who is in a weird place, both in the Epic Seven story and the current Epic Seven meta. He is a limited-edition, purely PvP-focused hero who is specifically designed to enable and counter stall compositions, where the player uses four tanky units and lots of healing and revival to stall out the enemy's offense.

Unfortunately, due to a glut of hugely powerful DPS heroes and the prevalence of Unbuffable, Unhealable, and buff strip, stall comps are not in a good place in the late 2019-early 2020 meta. However, should the winds of change blow Arena strategies back to stall comps, the Emperor of the Stars will be there, ready and waiting to welcome opponents into the maw of the Ancient Beast.

Strengths

Spammable Stun

Having a Stun on your S1 is extremely valuable in Epic Seven. It means that Zeno's Stun is never off cooldown, and it also means that he can randomly Stun by getting pulled into Dual Attacks or by triggering counterattacks.

AOE Silence

Zeno's S3 deals damage to all enemies, causes Bleed (after Awakening), and also Silences them for one turn. Because Zeno is surprisingly quick for such a twisted monstrosity, he can often outspeed other heroes and use his S3 early in a battle, Silencing the enemy team and preventing them from acting.

Scales With Health

As part of his lean toward stall compositions, Zeno is built to survive. His attacks scale off Health, encouraging players to build him tanky.

Punishes Buff Strategies

Every time an enemy uses a non-attack skill -- i.e., a buff or a heal -- Zeno gains additional Defense and his S3 becomes stronger. If running against a similar stall comp filled with Knights and Soul Weavers, Zeno will feed off their attempts to protect themselves and become an unstoppable force.

Weaknesses

Limited Hero

As a limited hero, Zeno is only available during specific events, and cannot be pulled from the Covenant Summon or other banners the rest of the year.

Awkward to Build

It's hard to build Zeno in a way that maximizes his kit. His damage scales off his Health, but he also causes Bleed, which scales off his Attack. His passive, meanwhile, increases his Defense, which that doesn't play into any of his skills. Of course, he still needs Speed and Effectiveness or else he won't be able to pull his weight. Instead of fitting together with synergy, building Zeno can feel rather slapdash.

Does Not Suit Current Meta

Zeno is a weird hero because he is designed not just to be IN a stall comp, but also to fight AGAINST a stall comp. If either his team or the enemy team is running fast, heavy cleave (which is very meta right now), he has trouble contributing to the fight, because his kit is designed to go slow and punish the enemy team over time. Should stall comps come back into vogue, he will be much more popular, but for now, he's just too slow to keep up in PvP battles (which is odd to say about a hero with 115 base Speed).
