Builds

Death Note

Regardless of what kind of content Celestial Mercedes is going to explode today, she wants to be built the same: pure DPS. Prioritize Crit Chance until she has 100% critical rate, since she needs that for her S3, and then capitalize on it with all the Crit Damage you can find. Spd and Atk% should fill all remaining substat slots.

If you're pairing Celestial Mercedes with an ailment-heavy team (more likely in PvE, where you're going to want a reliable Defense Breaker at bare minimum), you can go with a Rage set for her primary gear set. Otherwise, go for Destruction.

Similarly, her secondary gear set should be Critical unless she already has 100% Crit Chance, in which case you can consider something else. Immunity is good for PvP, while Hit or Unity might be preferred for PvE.

NOTE: If you need an extra boost to Celestial Mercedes' Crit Chance, you can use an Ego Fragment to flip her Devotion Aura to Concentration, giving her Crit Chance instead of the rest of the team.

There are so many good Artifacts for Celestial Mercedes that it's hard to pick just one. Focus on improving her DPS, since that's her primary role on the team.

  • The best Artifacts are Necro & Undine (if you have it from the Guilty Gear crossover event) or Kal'adra (if you can pair Celestial Mercedes with teammates who can reliably cause ailments).
  • Good substitutes include Time Matter (especially for Abyss or Automaton Tower) and Radiant Forever (specifically if taking her into PvE against boss monsters).

Team

Core

This team is specifically built for Golem 11, but it can apply to a lot of other PvE content as well. Ken has a very reliable Defense Break, and Vivian has an AOE Greater Attack buff, which is always good to have around. Vivian's Immunity and Achates' Invincibility both help to keep Celestial Mercedes alive, allowing her to rain book-based destruction on the field, and Vivian can follow up with her S2 for even more AOE cleave.

Secondary

This is a more PvP-oriented team, designed to enable Celestial Mercedes to wipe the enemy team in two powerful strikes.

  • Fallen Cecilia has Provoke, barriers, and Skill Nullify, ensuring the team survives long enough for Celestial Mercedes to work her magic.
  • Challenger Dominiel can buff Celestial Mercedes' Crit Chance (if you can't quite reach 100%) but she's really there to soak up Celestial Mercedes' crit energy into a killing S1 on any foe that might survive the initial salvo. She also gives a little extra teamwide CR when she buffs, which can on occasion be crucial.
  • Auxiliary Lots needs to move first so he can give Celestial Mercedes his turn (plus a free Attack buff). Opening with his S3's AOE Silence also helps prevent the enemy team from stopping Celestial Mercedes' rampage.
  • It's Celestial Mercedes' show at this point. Open with S3, crit the living hell out of the enemy team to earn a second turn, and follow up with S2 to finish the job.

Analysis

Overview

Celestial Mercedes has had a bad reputation for a while, but after a much-needed buff to the damage of her S3, she's become something of a sleeper unit for strong AOE damage. It's not uncommon for players to be turned off by her low base Spd and limited team utility, and she is certainly not easy to build, requiring a lot of investment and a team built entirely around her needs. However, once she's properly set up, Celestial Mercedes is a loose cannon with way too much power who absolutely obliterates anything foolish enough to get in her way.

Strengths

Huge AOE Damage

Celestial Mercedes is the queen of huge AOE damage. Like her Fire-element counterpart, all of her attacks are AOE, but as a Dark-element hero, no enemy can resist Celestial Mercedes' spells. With percentage damage on her S2 and a beefy x1.2 damage multiplier on her S3, Celestial Mercedes is the Mage equivalent of nuclear warfare.

Bonus CR from S3

The trick that helps Celestial Mercedes surmount her slow Spd is her S3, which targets all enemies and gives her bonus Combat Readiness based on how many critical hits she makes. With 100% Crit Chance, Celestial Mercedes gives herself 20% CR for every enemy hit. That's 60% CR in Guild Wars, 80% CR in Arena, and over 100% for a free extra turn in some PvE like the Automaton Tower.

Versatile DPS

Because she is Dark-element and her massive damage output is not conditional (as opposed to, say, Ludwig, who needs to be Invincible to maximize his damage), Celestial Mercedes is perfectly at home in just about any content, whether PvE or PvP.

Good for Golem

As said above, Celestial Mercedes can be used anywhere, but she deserves a special nod for Golem 11. Between causing Unhealable on her S1 and all the AOE damage she causes, Celestial Mercedes is a great fit for this fight.

Weaknesses

Very Slow

By far the biggest issue you have to work around with Celestial Mercedes is her slow base Spd. She's not the slowest in the game, but she's far too slow to be effective without help. Especially in PvP, she virtually requires a CR manipulator like Righteous Thief Roozid or Auxiliary Lots who can help her get a turn before the enemy team can wipe the floor with her.

Requires Investment

Without 100% Crit Chance and lots of offensive stats to feed into her multipliers, Celestial Mercedes is not going to outperform other strong DPS heroes like Vildred or Clarissa. Plenty of DPS heroes are strong out of the box with much less investment. It's only at a very high level of play, with very high-quality gear and team composition, where Celestial Mercedes can really shine.
