Assets

  • +ATK: Attack is a great Asset choice for offensive units in general and Groom Pent is no exception. Regardless of whatever type of set one chooses for Groom Pent, he will always appreciate an extra boost in his damage output.

  • +SPD: Speed is another great Asset choice. The extra Speed will help Groom Pent to secure follow-up attacks with greater ease which in turn will increase his overall offensive capabilities.

Neutral

  • HP: Groom Pent’s HP is not bad but not good either. While taking an Asset in HP would do little to help Groom Pent in combat, it would bring him up to 145 BST which in turn makes him better at Arena scoring. However, cavalry mages already score pitifully so this is hardly worth it if other Assets are available to use. Overall, HP is best kept neutral but a HP Flaw will also work just fine.

Flaws

  • -DEF/RES: Groom Pent’s Defense and Resistance are both bad, to the point where both make for perfectly viable Flaws. One may want a Flaw in Defense in order to preserve what magical bulk Groom Pent has while one may want a Flaw in Resistance instead in order to minimize the effect of adaptive damage or to maintain physical bulk for fighting Distant Counter foes. Either way, both make for great Flaw choices.

Show Explanation/Analysis

Preferred IV: +ATK or +SPD / -DEF or -RES

Either Attack or Speed will be the most beneficial Asset choices for Groom Pent in order to increase his offensive capabilities. Either Defense or Resistance will be the best Flaw choice.

Weapon: Blárblade+ / Vessel of Cheer+ (+Spd)

  • Blárblade is the primary choice of tome for any offensive mage. This tome boosts Groom Pent’s damage equal to the total amount of buffs from skills such as Hone and Fortify present on him. When fully boosted, Blárblade allows Pent to deal immense amounts of damage.

  • Vessel of Cheer, Groom Pent’s default weapon, is also strong. This weapon gives him the Swift Sparrow skill, a great A slot choice for offensive units. Refining it for Speed is recommended in order to help Pent secure follow-up attacks.

Assist: Reposition / Rally Up Atk+ / Player Preference

  • Groom Pent comes default with Rally Up Atk which both scores well and acts as a strong Rally skill. Whether or not one wants to replace this with a movement Assist such as Reposition is completely up to the user.

Special: Glimmer / Moonbow

  • Glimmer is a natural choice of Special for a blade tome user as it has a low cooldown and the extra damage granted by Blárblade will increase Glimmer’s power.

  • Moonbow is another good choice, coming with the same low cooldown as Glimmer. When used with Vessel of Cheer, Moonbow will generally outperform Glimmer against high Resistance foes whereas Glimmer will generally remain a better choice against low Resistance foes.

Passive A: Atk/Spd Solo / Swift Sparrow / Fury (3 or 4)

  • Atk/Spd Solo is the overall strongest offensive A slot choice, granting a large offensive boost whenever Groom Pent has no adjacent allies.

  • Swift Sparrow is another strong option, granting less of a boost than Atk/Spd Solo but only requiring Groom Pent to initiate combat. It is also far cheaper than Atk/Spd Solo to inherit.

  • Fury is a great budget choice, boosting all of Groom Pent’s stats at the cost of some recoil damage after every round of combat. While Fury 4 is a stronger choice than Fury 3, it is also far more expensive and Fury 3 will work perfectly fine for Groom Pent.

Passive B: Desperation / Chill Spd / Chill Res

  • Desperation is a cheap and excellent choice for the B slot. This skill permits Groom Pent to make any follow-up attack instantly after his first attack whenever he’s below 75% HP.

  • Chill skills such as Chill Spd and Chill Res also make for good B slot choices, allowing Groom Pent to debuff the foes with the highest Speed or Resistance in order to aid himself and his allies in combat.

Passive C: Pulse Smoke / Cavalry Buff / Player Preference

  • Pulse Smoke is Groom Pent’s default C slot skill and there is no need to change it for another C slot skill if one doesn’t want to. This skill will make Groom Pent’s target and foes around target to lose one point of Special charge, helping to offset the power of foes reliant on Specials.

  • If on a cavalry team, Groom Pent can also utilize a Cavalry buff such as Hone Cavalry.

Sacred Seal: Darting Blow / Brazen Atk/Spd / Atk/Spd 2

  • Darting Blow makes for a strong Sacred Seal choice, granting Groom Pent with a large Speed boost whenever initiating combat.

  • Brazen Atk/Spd is also a strong choice. Whenever Pent is below 80% HP, which he will be in order to utilize Desperation, Brazen Atk/Spd will give him a large offensive boost.

  • If neither of the above are available, the simple Atk/Spd 2 will also prove to be a simple but effective choice.

Show Explanation/Analysis

Preferred IV: +ATK / -DEF or -RES

As the intention is to defeat opponents in a single hit, Groom Pent’s best Asset choice for this set is Attack. Either Defense or Resistance will make for a good Flaw.

Weapon: Blárblade+

  • Blárblade will increase Groom Pent’s damage by the total number of buffs on him from skills such as Hone and Fortify. Since the ability to defeat foes in a single hit is imperative for this build, having this huge damage boost is extremely important.

Assist: Reposition / Rally Up Atk+ / Player Preference

Special: Glimmer / Moonbow

  • Glimmer is a very strong and synergistic Special when used with a blade tome. It has a low cooldown and the extra damage granted by the blade tome will increase its power.

  • Moonbow is another good choice, having the same low cooldown as Glimmer. However, Glimmer overall is typically preferable with a blade tome.

Passive A: Close Counter

  • Close Counter is needed for this build to function as intended since it allows Groom Pent to retaliate on foes that attack in close quarters.

Passive B: Vantage

  • Vantage, just like Close Counter, is also an important skill for this build.

  • Since the intention is for Groom Pent to ‘tank’ the opposing team through a single Attack. Vantage is necessary to allow him to attack first and therefore theoretically get the KO before the enemy can attack.

Passive C: Res Smoke / Savage Blow / Pulse Smoke / Cavalry Buff / Player Preference

  • Res Smoke allows Groom Pent to debuff the foes around his target for a large amount of Resistance. This increases his overall damage output against affected enemies.

  • Savage Blow is a good budget option which makes Groom Pent deal a small amount of AoE damage whenever he initiates combat.

  • Given the intention of this set, Groom Pent’s default C slot skill Pulse Smoke won’t offer many benefits in general. However, it may have very niche use should an opponent be using a Special such as Miracle or Aegis. In general though, Groom Pent with this set will see more benefit from other C slot skills.

Sacred Seal: Brazen Atk/Def / Brazen Atk/Res / Brazen Atk/Spd / Fierce Stance / Attack +3

  • Since Groom Pent will need to be below 75% HP regard in order to use Vantage, the Brazen skills make for fantastic Sacred Seal choices. Any Brazen skill that buffs Attack will fit perfectly.

  • Fierce Stance is also a good choice. It doesn’t boost Attack quite as much as a Brazen skill and it only works on Enemy Phase, but it otherwise has no other requirements.

  • If nothing else is available, Groom Pent could use a simple Attack +3 Seal in order to get one last small power boost.

Introduction

Making his debut in Heroes is none other than Pent, Count Reglay himself. Not in his typical attire though, instead wearing a fancy regal suit ready for his wedding with Louise. Groom Pent is a blue mage cavalier coming with good offensive stats and weak defensive capabilities.

Groom Pent comes with good Attack and Speed. When coupled with his strong default weapon, he can be quite strong when used offensively with little investment. However, his below average HP and poor Defense and Resistance means he cannot take a lot of punishment before he is defeated, thus restricting his usage to offensive play.

Unfortunately, Groom Pent does not do much to make himself stand out in the crowd of blue mage cavaliers. Spring Catria and L’Arachel, for example, both have similar offensive stats to Groom Pent except also come with personal weapons that enhance their capabilities. In the case of L’Arachel, she is also easier to obtain several copies of, thus making her easier to get merges for.

None of this subtracts from Groom Pent’s overall strengths though. Regardless of how much he differentiates from other blue mage cavaliers, he still possesses the stats necessary to be a strong offensive unit when given the right skills.

Strengths

Good Offensive Stats

With 33 Attack and 34 Speed, Groom Pent possesses the stats he needs in order to be strong offensively. He can be made to deal great damage and have strong follow-up potential when enhanced with the right skills and buffs.

Cavalry Strengths

Being a cavalier, Groom Pent gets access to two main benefits. Firstly, he can enjoy a natural movement range of three which grants him great flexibility with how he wants to approach certain scenarios thanks to the extended reach. Secondly, he can also enjoy Cavalry buffs which are a quick and cheap way to give him a large number of buffs.

Weaknesses

Poor Defensive Stats

With 37 HP, 19 Defense, and 24 Resistance, Groom Pent’s defensive capabilities leave a lot to be desired. Both physical and magical foes will deal significant damage to him. One should make sure to be cautious if Groom Pent must be left in the range of foes as he could take a lot of damage or be ORKO’d if not careful.

Cavalry Weaknesses

Being a cavalier also has drawbacks. Cavalry units are hindered by terrain more than any other movement type, being completely incapable of traveling through forests and being slowed down by trenches. On maps with a lot of these two terrain types, being a cavalier can be a huge hindrance. Groom Pent must also be careful to watch out for anybody with weapons that deal effective damage to cavalry units.
