B Passive: Lunge

  • Because Quan has an awkward SPD stat, he’s more than likely going to be doubled by most of his foes. As such, one can easily attempt to bolster his already high defense stat or dump his PRF for Courtly Candle+ and run a deflect set.

  • Despite having a weird SPD stat, there can be instances where he may end up doubling some of the slowest foes in the game, namely units such as Brave Edelgard. This can be a problem if Quan is heavily merged up as Quan doubling will disable Deflect Melee. So depending on the merge count, one can easily attempt to use a Courtly Candle+ set with a SPD bane or keep the PRF and stack DEF like crazy.

  • Even beyond the SPD stat, if any close counter mage or dragon attacks Quan, there is very little chance of survival due to his pitiful RES stat. Even with Courtly Candle+ as his weapon, the Damage Reduction will only apply to the first hit and since Quan’s SPD is rather tricky as is, there’s a strong possibility that he’s going to get doubled and fall.

  • Depending on how you want to optimize Quan, you can either run him with Bonfire to make him an imminent threat or Escutcheon for better survivability. Assuming that Quan is able to initiate and survive the first combat, the opponent will have no choice but to prioritize Quan as he will have Bonfire all charged up. The same can also apply when running Escutcheon as Quan will be in the way of the foe, but damage output will be less overall without a damaging special.

  • For this set, you’ll want to bolster his Defense stat. As such, you can either run AR-D Atk/Def or Fort. Def/Res. AR-D Atk/Def allows Quan to use his high ATK stat to the fullest as he’ll be able to deal a lot of damage with one hit. Likewise, if he ends up getting refreshed in the process, he can easily run towards the backline and attack one of the frailer units on the team for a potential OHKO. If that’s not an option, you can always run Fort. Def/Res as that will also bolster his DEF stat to a good degree.

  • Lunge will allow Quan to separate many of the AR-O enemy phase units from their support allies. This can be especially helpful when both Quan and the foe swap places as that will make the foe more susceptible to damage and, depending on how much damage Quan took in the process, can trigger Wings of Mercy for your allies. The only thing you have to worry about is Near Save as that disables the movement of skills such as Lunge.

  • Smokes are fairly standard for AR-D. The idea here is that by having Quan initiate combat and surviving thanks to the rest of his kit, he can inflict Panic on both the opponent he faced and all the allies grouped near said opponent and then lunge the foe towards more of the team. This can make damage output much easier for Quan’s allies as the foe will have all of their visible buffs reversed. Likewise, if you are running Gáe Bolg with Wings of Mercy allies, they can easily swoop in and deal even more damage, assuming they meet the required typing, thanks to the supportive capabilities the weapon has.

  • Deflect Melee is going to be the bread and butter of the set. Quan’s awkward SPD means, more often than not, he’s going to be getting doubled by most AR-O threats. As a result, he will want a skill that can not only help him with his survivability but also allow him to get Panic Smoke off and trigger Wings of Mercy shenanigans. However, there’s always a possibility that he himself doubles, which will disable Deflect Melee. That being said, it shouldn’t be a problem if he has little to no merges.

C Passive: Goad Cavalry / Ward Cavalry / Joint Drive Atk / Drive Atk / Panic Ploy

Sacred Seal: Drive Atk / HP +5

  • Being that his weapon now has supportive capabilities, Quan is now able to take up other roles beyond being an offensive unit. That being said, the weapon only grants ATK and DEF to a limited number of units, so he’s not necessarily the best option support-wise.

  • Despite his supportive capabilities, the awkward stat allocation and class type mean his role as a support unit is rather limited. Having no RES with decent DEF means Quan is unable to soak Dark Shrines if the opportunity arises. Similarly, because Quan has an awkward SPD stat, he is unable to soak Bright Shrines.

  • The Special can realistically be anything as most of his kit is geared towards supporting his allies. That being said, if he does have to take hits and/or deal damage, running Bonfire wouldn’t be a bad option by any means since his DEF stat becomes rather high after the refinement.

  • As previously mentioned, Quan lacks the ability to soak both shrines due to limited BST and poor stat allocation. As a result, Quan cannot run skills such as Life and Death and Fury since it won’t bolster his stats enough for shrine soaking. As such, you’re limited to either using an HP skill to compliment Even Pulse Tie or offensive skills which can be anything that raises his ATK and DEF.

  • Here you’ll find that you have a little bit more flexibility. Running skills such as double HP +5, combined with Quan’s relatively decent HP stat, means Quan can run Even Pulse Tie fairly well. Similarly, if you’re looking to debuff the foe, you can always run a Ruse skill. Beyond that, there’s not much else Quan can run, besides Chills, since his lack of RES doesn’t provide him the ability to run Sabotages and there are currently no other support B Passives that compliment Quan well in the game at this time.

  • Then, you have your standard support skills. One can easily run Drive ATK as Quan’s C Passive to further bolster the amount of ATK an ally gets. Likewise, if the ally being supported in question is a cavalry unit, you can stack even more stats with Goad Cavalry and Ward Cavalry for additional ATK and SPD or DEF and RES respectively. Panic Ploy is also an option if you are running double HP +5 with Even Pulse Tie as Quan will have the HP stat necessary to panic foes.

  • Finally, you can run an additional Drive and/or HP +5 as the Sacred Seal. An additional Drive Atk can grant allies upwards of +11 to +12 ATK, assuming that the C Passive is also Drive Atk or Joint Drive Atk. Likewise, having an additional HP +5 as the Sacred Seal can make Even Pulse Tie and Panic Ploy checks even easier to make.

  • Even for general PvE use, Quan is still going to be struggling against dragons and mages. As a result, you’ll want to focus on skills that help raise his ATK and DEF stats.

  • Running Bonfire as his Special, combined with Quick Riposte as one of his skills, can allow Quan to trigger it every combat so long as there aren’t any skills that are preventing his ability to double and/or if the foe can’t double themselves. Both conditions should be relatively easy to fulfill as most PvE content lacks any form of NFU or follow-up negation. However, if you do find yourself doubling, you can always run Glimmer.

  • Because Quan lacks any and all RES, Distant Counter can easily be substituted for Distant Foil as that will still allow Quan to take on foes that target his best stat. Likewise, you can stack even more ATK and DEF with skills such as Sturdy Stance if on a budget.

  • For more offensive and defensive prowess, you can either run Lull Atk/Def or Quick Riposte. Lull Atk/Def will make it harder for physical units to deal damage to Quan as they cannot buff their own attack through visible stats and will lose an additional three ATK and DEF on top of that. For budget purposes, you can also run Quick Riposte and take on physical units that way as Quan doesn’t have the necessary SPD stat to double naturally. Just be wary of the damage taken as it may be possible to be knocked out of the QR range.

  • For more damage output, one can run Joint Drive ATK as that will grant Quan upwards of +14 ATK before any of his support comes into play. For budget purposes, you can also run Def Smoke and gain ATK in that manner. If you believe that he’s already dealing enough damage as is, you can run Atk Smoke and further bolster his bulk. This can be especially nice as it can help keep Quan in the Quick Riposte range.

  • Finally, depending on what you’re already running as Quan’s B Passive, one can either bolster his ATK and DEF stats even more or run Quick Riposte. Atk/Def Solo is definitely one of the better options for Quan to have as the additional +6 to ATK and DEF makes it even easier for Quan to take on physical threats. Likewise, if you’re not running Quick Riposte as his B Passive, then running it as his Sacred Seal isn’t a bad option as his SPD isn’t high enough to double naturally without a lot of support behind it. Otherwise, you can either run Mystic Boost for passive healing, which can help keep him in the Quick Riposte range, or other skills that raise ATK and/or DEF.

Strengths

Gáe Bolg Support

The Gáe Bolg refinement gives Quan flexibility in his playstyle as not only does the refinement grant him more stats for his performance, but also grants additional stats to all Sword, Lance, Axe, and Cavalry units within three spaces. As a result, one can easily stack skills such as Drive Atk, Goad Cavalry, and Joint Drives to further bolster the performance of both Quan and his allies.

Big Attack and Defense

Having a base ATK of 37 and a base DEF of 31, combined with a 16 MT PRF that grants an additional +10 ATK and DEF, allows Quan to perform as a decent physical tank and damage dealer, especially in the enemy phase where he can run skills that allow him to double, such as with Quick Riposte.

Weaknesses

Middling Combat Prowess

While the Gáe Bolg has the benefit of being a pseudo-support weapon as well as making Quan into a decent physical tank, the lack of anything beyond that makes it hard for Quan to perform as a damage dealer overall as he’ll be relying on the ability to OHKO, which isn’t always guaranteed thanks to a plethora of Damage Reduction skills, HP inflation in Aether Raids, and, if running as an enemy phase unit, Impacts.

Awkward Speed

Starting off with a base SPD of 29 puts Quan in an awkward position where he’ll struggle to double a lot of the time and, more often than not, be doubled by most of his foes. This wouldn’t be necessarily as bad if he were an infantry unit as they can stack SPD and pair it with skills that complement the stat such as with Spurn, but because he’s a cavalry unit with no skills that work off of SPD, it simply ends up becoming a stat that won’t bear fruit.

Low Resistance

Due to his lack of Resistance, if any mage or dragon so much as sneezes on him, there’s a decent possibility that he won’t be surviving. Likewise, combined with his middling SPD stat, Quan is also prone to doubles, making it even more difficult to survive against magic-bearing foes.
