Show Explanation/Analysis

Weapon: Gronnserpent+ (+Def or +Res) / Gronnowl+ (+Def or +Res) / Sandwiches! (+Def)

  • Gronnserpent synergises perfectly with the intention of this set by proving Picnic Leo with a boost to his Defense and Resistance whenever a ranged enemy initiates combat against him. Both a Defense and Resistance refine will work nicely to provide Leo with some extra bulk.

  • Gronnowl is similarly strong. While it requires three adjacent allies to reach the same defensive boost as Gronnserpent, it will also provide bonus Attack and Speed too. It’s also cheaper to inherit. Like with Gronnserpent, either a Defense or Resistance refine is recommended.

  • Leo’s default tome Sandwiches! is also a strong option, proving Picnic Leo with extra Attack and Resistance whenever the enemy initiates combat. Since no extra Defense is provided from the weapon effect, it is recommended you refine for Defense with Sandwiches! In particular.

Assist: Reposition / Player Preference

Special: Iceberg / Bonfire / Glimmer

  • Both Iceberg and Bonfire will make for solid Special options. Both possess a fair cooldown of 3 and will be powerful due to all the defensive boosts Picnic Leo will get from his other skills. Which one is chosen is simply a matter of whether one’s own Picnic Leo has higher Defense or Resistance.

  • Glimmer will make for a fine budget option which has the benefit of a lower cooldown when compared to Iceberg or Bonfire. It’s power is widely variable though since it’s based off of how much damage Picnic Leo deals to the opponent.

Passive A: Distant Def

  • Distant Def 4 is the best option for this build. Not only does the skill provide a huge defensive boost when attacked at range, but it also negates the buffs of ranged foes granted by skills such as Hone and Fortify.

  • Compared to Distant Def 4, Distant Def 3 gives slightly less of a defensive boost and doesn’t negate buffs. However, Distant Def 3 will still be a great skill choice for Picnic Leo, especially since he comes with it by default.

Passive B: Quick Riposte / Guard

  • Picnic Leo comes with Quick Riposte by default and it’s a perfect fit for this set. Quick Riposte will give Picnic Leo a guaranteed follow-up attack whenever he is attacked while above 70% HP, thus increasing her offensive power on Enemy Phase substantially.

  • Guard is another good option, helping Picnic Leo to keep safe from enemy Specials and helping to offset the Special cooldown boosts provided by skills such as Heavy Blade and Bold Fighter.

Passive C: Atk Smoke / Cavalry Buff / Player Preference

  • Atk Smoke is a relatively safe choice of C slot for Picnic Leo, reducing the Attack of every enemy around his target substantially. As this skill does activate on Enemy Phase, it can help to keep him safe if he needs to fight multiple enemies at once.

  • If he’s alongside other cavaliers, Picnic Leo can also bring a cavalry buff such as Hone Cavalry in order to support his teammates.

Sacred Seal: Distant Def / Chill Atk / Quick Riposte

  • Distant Def works well as the Sacred Seal, stacking with the Distant Def A slot and Gronnserpent to provide at least a massive 18 point boost to Defense and Resistance when initiated upon by ranged foes (20 if running Distant Def 4).

  • Chill Atk is also a good option, allowing Picnic Leo to automatically debuff the enemy with the highest Attack for seven Attack, helping him and his team with their survivability against that opponent.

  • If Quick Riposte is not being used in the B slot, using it as the Sacred Seal is also a viable option.

IVs

+ATK / -SPD

SBrazen Atk/Def 3
Alternate: Brazen Atk/Res 3

Show Explanation/Analysis

Weapon: Gronnblade+

  • Gronnblade is a powerful offensive tome that adds all of the buffs from skills such as Hone and Fortify that Picnic Leo has and turns them into extra damage. With a full range of buffs, Picnic Leo will be dealing a lot of damage in a single attack.

Assist: Reposition / Player Preference

Special: Glimmer / Moonbow

  • Picnic Leo’s default Glimmer works very well with this set. As Glimmer is a low cooldown special and based off the amount of damage Picnic Leo deals in a single attack, it’s a natural fit with a blade tome.

  • Moonbow is another good option, having the same cooldown as Glimmer

Passive A: Close Counter

  • Close Counter is important for this build since it allows Picnic Leo to retaliate against foes that attack in close quarters.

  • Without Close Counter, this set loses a lot of its appeal.

Passive B: Vantage

  • Vantage is also important as it allows Picnic Leo to attack first when below 75% HP.

  • This is important since the main intention with this set is for Picnic Leo to ‘tank’ through defeating enemies in a single attack. Vantage is important for this in order to keep him safe and make him potentially untouchable depending on the opposition.

Passive C: Res Smoke / Savage Blow / Cavalry Buff / Player Preference

  • Res Smoke allows Picnic Leo to debuff the enemies around his target for a large amount of Resistance, thus increasing his own damage output against them.

  • Savage Blow is a decent budget option, allowing Picnic Leo to deal a little bit of AoE damage whenever he initiates combat.

Sacred Seal: Brazen Atk/Def / Brazen Atk/Res / Fierce Stance / Attack +3

  • The Brazen skills are fantastic choices for this set. As Leo needs to be below 75% HP regardless in order for Vantage to work, he’ll also have a Brazen skill active as well. The choice between Brazen Atk/Def and Brazen Atk/Res is up to one’s own personal preference since both provide the same Attack boost.

  • Fierce Stance is also a good option. While the Attack boost is not quite as high as a Brazen skill and it only activates on Enemy Phase, it has no requirement beyond needing to be attacked.

  • If nothing else is available, a simple Attack +3 Seal can also work to give Picnic Leo a little bit of extra power.

SDistant Def 3
Alternate: Quick Riposte 3

Show Explanation/Analysis

Weapon: Gronnraven+

  • Gronnraven provides Picnic Leo with Weapon Triangle advantage against colorless foes.

  • This allows him to perform as an effective counter to both blue and colorless ranged foes, especially with Triangle Adept

Assist: Reposition / Player Preference

Special: Bonfire / Iceberg / Glimmer

  • If one is running Steady Stance 4 on Picnic Leo, then Bonfire will outperform Iceberg on Enemy Phase.

  • However, if Triangle Adept or Distant Def is being used, Iceberg will outperform Bonfire.

  • Overall, one should observe where their Picnic Leo is expected to end up with his defensive stats (taking into considerations buffs from allies and other factors) and choose between Bonfire or Iceberg accordingly.

  • Glimmer is a serviceable budget option, but the fact that it’s power is based on damage dealt makes performance overall inconsistent.

Passive A: Steady Stance 4 / Triangle Adept / Distant Def

  • Steady Stance 4 grants Picnic Leo with a huge Defense boost as well as reduced enemy Special charge. This makes him harder for ranged physical attackers to take down as they cannot rely on their Specials to deal with him.

  • Triangle Adept is the tried and true A slot skill for Raven tome users and it remains a cheap and effective choice. Do be wary that Picnic Leo’s performance against all red foes will suffer greatly.

  • Distant Def is also a good budget option, providing Picnic Leo with bonus defensive stats when attacked at a distance.

Passive B: Quick Riposte / Axebreaker

  • Quick Riposte helps Picnic Leo with his offensive potential on Enemy Phase through guaranteed follow-up attacks when above 70% HP.

  • Picnic Leo can also run Axebreaker to give him extra coverage and allow him to perform well against axe fighters.

Passive C: Atk Smoke / Cavalry Buff / Player Preference

  • Atk Smoke is a safe C slot choice. This can help Picnic Leo against multiple opponents at once as he will debuff everyone around his target for seven Attack.

  • If Picnic Leo is on a cavalry team, he can use a cavalry buff should as Hone Cavalry to support his fellow cavalier teammates.

Sacred Seal: Chill Atk / Distant Def / Quick Riposte

  • Chill Atk makes for a nice choice in Sacred Seal. With it, Picnic Leo will debuff the Attack of the opponent with the highest Attack, thus helping himself and his entire team against the affected opponent.

  • Distant Def is also a good choice, granting Picnic Leo with extra defensive stats when attacked by ranged foes.

  • If not already being used in the B slot, Quick Riposte will make for a great Sacred Seal choice.

Strengths

Good Attack

At 33 Attack, Picnic Leo is capable of dealing good damage per attack. When taking his weapon and skills into consideration, Picnic Leo can deal high amounts of damage in addition to his defensive capabilities.

Decent Mixed Bulk

Spring Leo’s 37 HP, 27 Defense, and 28 Resistance is far from the strongest bulk available, but for ranged cavaliers in particular, it is good. When taking into consideration potential skills, Picnic Leo can become quite hard to defeat, particularly if against ranged foes which is where Picnic Leo performs best.

Three Movement

Being a cavalier, Picnic Leo gets to enjoy the benefits that come from having three movement. The higher movement grants him greater flexibility with his approach as he can get to places faster and potentially more safely than other movement types.

Great Base Kit

For the niche Picnic Leo aims to fulfil, one hardly has to do anything in terms of investment. Picnic Leo’s default tome Sandwiches! Is a great option that grants him bonus Attack and Resistance when the enemy initiates combat. He also comes with Distant Def and Quick Riposte by default, two solid choices of skills for a ranged tank. His one weak link is Glimmer, his default Special. While an acceptable choice, the fact that the power of Glimmer is based off of Picnic Leo’s raw dealt damage means it can be inconsistent.

Weaknesses

Poor Speed

At 21 Speed, Picnic Leo is one of the slowest units in the game. This greatly hinders any offensive potential as Picnic Leo will struggle to perform follow-up attacks against almost anyone without relying on his skills. This also hinders his defensive capabilities as well since most enemies will be capable of performing follow-up attacks against him.

Unpopular Niche

While Picnic Leo is able to fulfil the role of a ranged tank well, it is questionable how useful this niche actually is. In general, melee units make for better tanks due to their higher BST. This is even more notable of an issue with Picnic Leo who is also a cavalier. On top of this, Picnic Leo is primarily relegated to being a tank against ranged foes only as taking Close Counter on him means he’ll lose out on potentially valuable stats which he could otherwise gain from his A slot.

It’s not that Picnic Leo makes for a bad tank, it’s that other units can make for a much better tank. However, Picnic Leo is a rather unique entity within cavaliers themselves. If a ranged tank cavalier specifically is what one wants, then Picnic Leo is certainly available.
