Event Overview

This special event contains a series of maps you must fight your way through from beginning to end. Losing does not mean game over, as you can retry with a second team. At the end of each round, points are received based on clear speed, survivability and bonus units. Your total points are tallied and used to unlock various rewards, many of which are exclusive to the Tempest Trials. Additionally, there is a player ranking with large feather rewards given to those with the highest scores.

Other Rules

  • Bonus allies gain significant stat boosts (HP +10, +4 to all other stats).
  • Bonus allies gain double EXP and SP.
  • Your first two runs per day earn triple points.

About Tempest Trial Mini

  • Runs for one week instead of two.
  • Rewards require half the normal points.

Notable Rewards

4★ NY Corrin (1000 Score)

  • First revealed in the NY datamine, NY Corrin has now finally made his debut. Comparable to Leon stat-wise, NY Corrin isn’t exactly a stellar unit, but many players will likely appreciate his native bow’s buffs as well as the skill fodder (a dual rally and spur) that he provides.

Seal Atk 1 seal (6000 Score)

  • While free seals are always a welcome reward, Seal Atk 1 -- which applies a -3 debuff to a foe’s Atk after combat -- is simply outclassed by the Atk Smoke seal. Since the seal skills in general don’t see much use, this is definitely one of the least useful rewards during this tempest.

Def Ploy seal (10,000 Score)

  • This seal applies Def -3 to all foes within cardinal directions who have Res 1 or lower than the unit with this seal equipped. It has incredible utility considering Def Ploy’s limited availability, and also lets mid-to-high Res units run more than one Ploy skill at once.

Wind Blessing (12,500 Score)

  • Blessings are a new type of item released with the 2.0 update. Using them on a unit provides them with permanent effects such as double SP gain and stat boosts when sent into battle with the appropriate Legendary Hero (in this case, Gunnthrá). Blessings are rare items, so take the chance to pick this one up for free!

5★ NY Corrin (15,000 Score)

  • A five star copy of NY Corrin. The same as above applies, but considering many players avoid pulling on colorless, a free 5★ archer is nice. Since the score threshold to receive him is low and he’s a 40% bonus unit, NY Corrin is a decent reward.

Quick Riposte 1 seal (20,000 Score)

  • Talk about a game-changer. This seal will allow units to now run the Vantage / Quick Riposte combo that was previously exclusive to Hector, which also had the distinction of making him one of the best units in the game. When combined with the Distant Counter skill or Distant Counter weapons, the combination is ludicrously powerful. This is the one reward you definitely do not want to miss out on.

Orbs, feathers and crystals are awarded up to 50,000 score. Sacred Coins are also available, with the highest tier being 13,750 score.

Team Building

So now that you’ve seen the awesome rewards and know which ones are must-haves, that begs the question: how are you going to get them? In this section, instead of suggesting completed teams, the components that make for successful teams will instead be discussed. This is so people can build strong teams from what they have in their own box. Unless otherwise stated, all units from here on out are assumed to be running their recommended builds. A team with the best chance of success will have the following:

  • As many bonus units as possible.
  • A source of healing.
  • A strategy for the final map.
  • A unit to combat each colour (as the actual units within each map can vary greatly).

Bonus Units

The first units you’ll want to think about using are of course, the bonus units. With their huge stat bonuses (+10 HP, +4 to all other stats) They will punch far above their normal weight. All bonus units receive the same stat boost.

During this Tempest all the 40% bonus units have their own unique strengths. NY Takumi appreciates the stat boosts, debuffing nearby enemies and KOing with specials due to his weapon’s -1 cooldown effect. NY Camilla has a considerable offensive presence and sports and impressive 37 Atk / 39 Spd at neutral with stat bonuses, making her hit very hard. NY Corrin provides nice team support due to the buffs his bow and dual rally provide, and is very physically tanky normally, doubly so with the 4 extra points in defense.

NY Azura, though, is undoubtedly the best option of the bunch. Movement penalties will not affect her, and using the Guidance seal she provides both armor and infantry units with unparalleled mobility. The extra stat bonus she’s provided through the Tempest help her KO potential, although she’s still best suited to support other, more powerful teammates.

The 20% bonus units are a bit more cut and dry. Regarding Ryoma, any Distant Counter user in a Tempest is excellent, as the stat bonus the receive usually helps them patch up any low defenses they possess and boosts their already considerable offensive prowess. Hinoka really appreciates the addition to her low Atk, granting her greater damage output with her native Brave Lance, and the bonus to her Def and Res allows her to tank more damage. Sakura, as a healer, will not be attacking much, but if she has her staff refined to take advantage of the Wrathful effect, she is able to net some KOs that may otherwise give her teammates some trouble. Finally, Alfonse benefits from the 4 extra Atk and Def he gains, making him more effective at battling other sword units.

Healers

Thanks to the 2.0 update which introduced forging, Staff users are stronger than ever and are highly recommended for all kinds of teams. Their raw healing output is significantly higher than unofficial healers, and can also provide strong chip damage to neutralize strong threats. They are, however, not the only option on the table.

There are a few types of builds which can be used to heal teams without using a dedicated healer. The first of these is the “Renewal Medic”, a build type which relies on healing provided from Renewal and the legendary weapon Falchion. Reciprocal Aid is a must-have skill to ensure clean transferral of health to allies. Masked Marth, Lucina, Chrom, Alm, and Marth can all run this kind of build.

Breath of Life is another great skill capable of turning a unit into a substitute healer. With the skill itself and the fully upgraded seal, it’s possible to heal 14 health to allies every attack. All the Performing Arts units have weapons that provide further healing, as does Linde with her unique tome Aura. Reciprocal Aid is a must here too, to ensure that these units themselves can remain sustained. In Linde’s case, a dancer can potentially double this healing output. Finally, there is the "sustain tank" build popularized with the addition of the Steady Breath skill. With a cooldown -1 weapon, Steady Breath, Quick Riposte and Aether, a unit can charge and fire off their special during every round of combat, keeping their health topped up over a long time.

Dancers

These are some of the most potent allies for Tempest Trials, offering both safety and speed to your run. In short, they are great for all the usual reasons, but are affected by their low combat stats, which can hold them back. Due to team limitations, if you choose to field a dancer they must be a respectable combat unit in their own right, with either a full build or something close. Since NY Azura is a bonus unit during this Tempest, she enjoys a considerable boost to both her damage output and survivability.

Sweepers

One of the easiest ways to clear the Tempest Trials is with a powerful ranged attacker wielding a Brave weapon or Blade tome. Combined with a buffer or dancer, they can destroy most units in the trials with ease once they are under the Desperation threshold. Nino, Linde, Tharja, Katarina, Ursula, Brave Lyn, Bridal Cordelia, and Reinhardt are all common choices. NY Corrin is also an option, though a Brave Bow as well as a damage-boosting A skill such as Fury or Death Blow will have to be inherited by him.

All About Autobattle

For those looking to save time, the autobattle feature lets you quickly gain tempest points with minimal effort. When creating an autobattle team, here are a few considerations:

Difficulty

  • Hard (5 Battles) is the most suitable difficulty for most players, assuming you can use a whole team of five star characters. With enough bonus units or merges, it may be possible to do the Lunatic (5 Battles) difficulty.

Team Building

  • Team building considerations are mostly the same for manual teams. The AI tends to play recklessly, making tanky units with well-rounded statlines and Distant Counter fare the best. A dedicated healer is nearly always better unless you have multiple units with Aether or other healing. If you choose a dedicated healer, don’t forget to un-equip their weapon. Otherwise, the AI will treat them like a ranged attacker and play aggressively with them.

Examples

  • Distant Counter Units: Ryoma, Nowi, Dorcas, Hector, Ike, Black Knight, Zelgius, Young Tiki
  • Sustain Tanks: Nowi, Brave Ike, Ike, A!Tiki
  • Dedicated Healers: Sakura, any staff-user
  • Other Healers: Masked Marth / Lucina, Chrom, Arvis, Fae, Linde, Performing Olivia
  • Sweepers: NY Camilla, NY Corrin, Alfonse, Hinoka, Brave Lyn, Lute, Reinhardt, Ursula, Nino, Delthea, Celica, Bridal Cordelia

Triangle Adept/Gem Weapons

  • Enemies with gem weapons can prove troublesome, as the AI controlling your units will rush headlong into them if you’re in range. While your own units will most likely decimate foes they are strong against, thanks to the AI, they’ll also have many disadvantageous matchups. Oscar and Subaki are particularly notable threats since so many of the bonus units during this Tempest are red -- if you do a quick scan and see them as enemy units, it may be wise to temporarily take back control and KO them before continuing to autobattle.

Don’t sweat it!

  • At the end of the day, losing a team or two does not affect score by a large margin. Speed is much more important, so building slightly riskier teams that can clear a map in less turns is a good idea.

Friend formation around Fjorm and she kills almost everything during enemy phase. Luckily none of the foes are healers on serial killer customization. I water blessed Corrin because I don't have any other NY character as of yet, so I knew I was going to rely on Corrin for the highest bonus possible. I used Frederick the most in the fourth slot, but also subbed in PAO and regular Corrin a lot for variety.

(Y) tiki needs to have lightning breath+ to work at her best, and for Nowi's C slot skill, hone atk is quite handy because of Tiki's attack stat that gets lowered quite much if you don't run fierce stance, atk +3 or fury. Fortify dragons is great for both dragons. Takumi gives you extra points and has(mine runs Life&Death) enormous attack and spd and even decent res so he can kill mages and infantry units without DC. Elise is there to heal up your allies everytime your HP runs low and I advise to give her miracle so she will survive a shot if she accidently gets attacked.(mine runs dazzling gravity+ and atk+3 A slot + Physic+ + Miracle)

TA Azura for blues, Guidance, and dancing, Fjorm is our magical wall, Ayra is the Desperation sweeper. Lyn keeps everyone healthy and can deal a blow in a pinch.

I've kept perfect A survival with only a few B's for speed on Lunatic 7-map difficulty, reaching 8K with only 9 runs. Too easy with this great team.
