Introduction

The Fire Emblem (ファイアーエムブレム, Fiyah Emburemu) games are ones that invite a lot of discourse when engaging in discussion about them. Such topics of heated debate include but are not limited to:

“what is the best Fire Emblem game?”

“is x lord a good character?”

“did Awakening save the franchise?”

“who is the best waifu?”

“why hasn’t Eirika gained str in 15 levels?”

“Edelgard”

“is face petting an essential mechanic?”

“what should the next remake be?”

As someone who has played every single one, allow me to dispel the first point for you right now by telling you that there is no such thing as a good Fire Emblem game. However, some entries are less bad than others. Let’s explore every title in the series and create a comprehensive ranking using a format that we all love and this website is revered for, Tier List Format!

Tier 6

Tellius (FE9/10)
Tellius

Ah, this is an easy one. Starting from the bottom up, I’m sure we can all agree that Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn are the worst games in the series. It’s often stated that these games were so bad, that they almost killed the franchise.

The story follows the journey of a young man named Iker as he travels the continent of Tellius in hopes of ending furry racism. Along the way, our protagonist (the blue haired one with the sword), encounters many trials and tribulations such as the death of his father, Heroic Grail, at the hands of general Zelgi- uh.. I mean The Black Knight, and the fight against Mad King Ashnard (who they should add to Heroes).

The killer of Ike's father

Ike, the hero

Following the events of Path of Radiance, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn begins with a new protagonist, Micaiah (sometimes known as Ms. Sue), and her rag tag group of really bad units known as the Trash Brigade. Micaiah’s place in the story is looking pretty and getting rekt by Ike. At this point, the plot has naturally escalated from ending furry racism to literally killing god. When all is said and done, Ike leaves the continent of Tellius behind with his two boyfriends.

Micaiah and her husband.

Sacred Stones is often criticized for lacking in difficulty and while it may not deliver there, you can say it makes up for it with its charming cast of characters. Take the lords, for instance. People seem to think that Ephraim’s most standout character trait is wanting to bang his sister when in reality, Ephraim’s story is a journey of wanting to become stronger, growing into the position of king, AND wanting to bang his sister. On the other hand, Eirika is often attacked for voluntarily giving up possession of the sacred stone to possessed Lyon. However, I feel that this point is unfounded.

Doesn’t this face look trustworthy?

Insert “disgusting” joke.

Solo’d the game with him as I was writing this paragraph.

Awakening
Awakening

After vaguely knowing about Fire Emblem as “those dudes from Smash Bros with the swords”, Awakening was my official introduction to the series. The advent of this game caused quite the divide between newer and older fans of the series but remember that this is the game that saved it from dying so don’t let the FE boomers convince you otherwise. While I was once known as an “Awakeningbaby”, I think I’ve grown up to more of an Awakening 12-year-old now

Gaiden
DONG

Don’t make no mistake. I’m not talking about Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. I am talking about the superior original Fire Emblem Gaiden. Between the legendary dong armor and Valbar on the cover for no reason, Gaiden just has this powerful energy that the remake can’t compete with. However, it doesn’t have the voice of Ian Sinclair so it loses points there.

Isn't he the cutest thing ever?

Superb map design.

Since Roy is one of the most popular and well-recognized characters in all of Fire Emblem, we should talk about the game that he originated from:

Super Smash Bros: Melee
theclassic

One of my favorite entries in the Fire Emblem series. Super Smash Brother Melee tells the story of our boy Roy’s quest to fight back against the invading kingdom of Bern led by it’s ruler, Fox McCloud. Roy recruits many allies along the way to aid in his journey such as Mario, Link, and Captain Falcon (a very strong late game prepromote) with the final confrontation being a 1v1 duel on the map Final Destination. While Roy seems to be a rather underwhelming lord for a majority of the game, his promotion into Skilled Lord will guarantee his ability to defeat any Fox.

Jugdral Duology
FE4

The Jugdral duology is often very well received from the people that have played it and for good reason. Genealogy tells a grand scale politically-themed story that you get to experience if you can make it through the tedious slog that is actually playing the game. Everyone’s favorite main character, Sigurd (blue haired guy with the sword) is a jesus on wheels superunit that runs down every enemy in his half of the game and is a constant reminder that any unit that isn’t on a mount may as well be guarding the castle with Arden, though you may notice that Sigurd falls off quite a bit after chapter 5.

The plot kicks off when Sigurd finds a mysterious girl in a forest and starts simping for her but oh no! Arvis, an even bigger simp, is jealous of Sigurd. If you haven’t already been spoiled by the many hilarious and original fire jokes, Sigurd’s tale ends when Arvis betrays him but unbeknownst to Arvis, that girl was actually his sister. So who got the last laugh in the end?

Fates
Masterpiece

A rich story-driven experience that every member of the Fire Emblem fandom agrees is a fantastic game. Now, as someone who conquered Birthright phoenix mode, I consider myself to be a real skilled Fire Emblem veteran but anyone can tell you that the Conquest route is the real definitive SRPG experience that Fates has to offer.

Truly, a game for the most cultured players.
