Assets

  • +ATK: Typically her preferred Asset when using Oboro's Spear, helping her get the most out of her weapon’s effective damage against armored units.

  • +DEF: Oboro’s best Asset otherwise, helping her accomplish her primary goal as a physical Enemy Phase tank.

  • +RES: Her Resistance hits a surprisingly decent 28 with her 4-point Resistance Asset, giving her strong mixed tanking ability. A good "generalist" choice for those looking for more than just a physical wall, and gives her a niche versus more-optimized units like Lukas.

Neutral

  • HP: As Oboro will almost always be functioning as a tank, it is a good idea to avoid her 4-point HP Flaw.

Flaws

  • -SPD: Most often, -SPD is Oboro's Flaw of choice as her Speed is a bit too middling to provide much use without heavy support.

    • However, if she does have said support, Oboro can also make pretty decent use of her 4-point +SPD Asset which brings her to 30 Speed. Of course, this would necessitate a Flaw in one of her other valuable stats, so this should probably only be done if one plans to merge Oboro at least once to neutralize her Flaw.

In conjunction with her high Defense, Oboro can run a powerful Steady Breath set allowing her to soak up physical damage and retaliate with frequent Special procs. Slaying Lance+ allows Oboro to activate Bonfire every single counterattack—twice in one combat if she is doubled—which will burn through physical opponents. Aether is an alternative that instead only procs every second attack, but grants her a welcome source of sustain. If one can provide her with the Quickened Pulse Sacred Seal, Ignis is a very powerful choice; she will be able to activate Ignis on her very first counterattack and then every second counterattack thereafter. In modes such as Arena where a unit often only enters combat once or twice, Quickened Pulse with Ignis will usually be more powerful.

Quick Riposte is instrumental to this set's effectiveness as it guarantees she will be able to hit her foe twice in the case that her opponents are not taken down by her first Special. She’d prefer to take this as her Sacred Seal so she can use Guard in her B slot, but Quick Riposte can instead be taken in her B slot if the Seal is unavailable.

Skills that dampen her opponent's offensive ability such as Atk Smoke are preferred in her C slot to make sure Oboro is indeed able to tank effectively. As with most units, however, this slot is flexible and can be swapped out with any support skill her team requires, such as a Spur or Drive.

One last worthwhile mention goes to opting to run some small adjustments to boost her Resistance. While she won't suddenly start tanking buffed Blade tome mages, small tweaks can allow her to quite comfortably take a couple hits from common magical threats such as Dragons. Switching her Lance's refine to +Res, using Warding Breath over Steady Breath, or opting to run a Close Def or Resistance +3 seal are all examples of potential tweaks. Close Def is a strong seal choice as it will also help with her physical matchups. For context, at 45 HP with a stat-refined weapon, a total of 8 extra Resistance (turning her neutral 24 Resistance to 32) is all it takes for an unmerged Oboro to survive two magical hits from up through 54 Atk, and if achieved through out-of-combat stats, can even allow her to use Ploy skills such as Atk Ploy that will assist in both physical and magical tanking.

A build centered around Oboro’s exclusive weapon, primarily designed to act as a counter in Arena Assault or sit on a secondary team in Aether Raids. This build can be done at either high-investment or low-investment simply depending on how far one wishes to go with it. Throughout this build, most skills should be tailored around shutting down common armor skills such as Bold Fighter, and after that toward increasing her Attack. However, various concessions can be made to put points into her Speed to improve her matchup versus faster Armors such as Legendary Young Tiki, who may otherwise double her even without Fighter skills.

Oboro wants to KO as quick as possible, so low-cooldown Specials like Glimmer and Moonbow are preferred.

The high-investment option for Oboro’s A slot is Steady Stance 4. This aims to slow the Special-boosting effect from skills like Bold Fighter and allow her to safely Enemy Phase armored units. An alternative high-investment skill would be Fierce Breath, allowing her to quickly dish out Specials, and aim for one-hit KOs. Lower-investment options would include skills such as Steady Posture or Attack +3, which give her basic boosts to her Defense, Speed, and Attack in various scenarios.

For her B slot, the optimal high-investment option would be Null Follow-Up. This completely shuts down the follow-up adjusting effects from skills such as Bold Fighter, Vengeful Fighter, and Wary Fighter, best allowing her to succeed as a dedicated armor counter. So long as she is not using Steady Stance 4, the optimal low-investment option is Guard, as if she is unable to nullify these effects, the next-best thing is to dampen their effectiveness. Skills such as Quick Riposte or Vantage can work as cheaper alternatives.

Oboro’s C slot is flexible, though defense-reducing effects from skills like Def Smoke or Threaten Def give her the most personal benefit. Alternative skills such as Drive Spd or Atk Tactics can provide greater overall team benefit based on the needs of her team.

Quick Riposte is a great Sacred Seal choice if one can provide it to her. Generally, any other bulk-bolstering or support Seal can be taken otherwise to good effectiveness based on what one has available.

  • Passive C: Atk Ploy / Def Ploy / Flexible
  • Sacred Seal: Distant Def / Quick Riposte / Resistance +3

A high-investment set suited for big fans of Oboro. Thanks to the weapon refinery, she can utilize Berkut's Lance to great effect, absolutely stacking the hell out of her Resistance while maintaining her respectable Defense. When paired with Distant Counter and Distant Def, that transforms our fashionista into a quite sturdy anti-mage, sitting at an effective 41 Defense and 45 Resistance against enemy ranged units.

To complement such Resistance, Oboro takes Iceberg to deal devastating damage, rivaling that of her bonfire damage on her Steady Breath builds. Paired with Quick Riposte, the Special will always go off vs any enemy that doubles her, striking back with a powerful nuke.

As is one of the primary goals high-Resistance units, indeed Oboro can be fashioned to easily tank Reinhardt and dish back the kill. An Atk Ploy debuff can even let her take a quad hit, including two Moonbow procs, from an opposing Reinhard that runs Lancebreaker. Of course, be wary of taking a quad hit combined with further cavalry buffs—while she is extremely durable, she isn't benefiting from a triangle advantage here and is certainly not immortal, and if Reinhardt has enough Speed Oboro can fail to double through Lancebreaker.

If one is afraid of falling to Special procs, Quick Riposte can be swapped to the Sacred Seal slot and Guard can be taken instead. Keep in mind though this may moderately lower her bulk vs units that weren't aiming to Special burst, who focus more on raw Attack or consecutive hits. On the plus side, it will absolutely give her a safer time against said units with high Special power or who may otherwise chunk her pretty hard with skills like Wrath, such as Karla or Nephenee.

Introduction

Oboro is a frontline lancer who enters the fray with a great Defense stat and a fairly average everything else. While able to fulfill her role with decent zeal, Oboro's biggest drawback is perhaps not so much any problem specific to her, but rather, the extraordinarily steep competition she faces for her roles. That is to say, Enemy Phase infantry lancers absolutely inundate Fire Emblem Heroes in spades, and often tend to hold a unique trait that allows them to shine over her. Units like Lukas will be able to sit much tankier, lances like Ephraim may hit quite a bit harder, Fjorm may act as a stronger mixed tank and comes with a Distant Counter prf, and other lances like Donnel, Shiro, and Nephenee all sit at higher Speed thresholds. Even Nephenee will usually be a superior anti-armor, having similar defenses but more Speed and a stronger armor-effective prf. In general, when searching for the optimal lancer for any specific role, Oboro's name will simply rarely come in first. She won’t fall completely off the list, but will usually be at least a few spots short of the top.

However, that is not to say Oboro is not bad or unusable, she still exhibits some great potential. Instead, Oboro finds the most success in taking her balanced stat spread and owning it. While she may reach lower peaks than those she competes with, she can find herself subtly tweaking her builds and statline, thanks to the many small customizations available such as seals and refines, to act as a fairly convincing generalist. Oboro's Defense still remains some of the highest in the game after all, and her Resistance is higher than most other lancers with comparable Defense, giving her the ability to tank both physical and magical hits to varying degrees on a variety of builds. It is here that she can feasibly manage a broader number of scenarios with just one build than many of her peers—just, to a slightly lesser peak, in each case.

Strengths

Amazing Physical Bulk

She still has one of the higher base Defense stats in the game and is excellent at repelling physical threats.

Passable Resistance

Though only average at base, Oboro notably has a slightly higher Resistance than most of the lancers that typically overshadow her, giving her some surprising mixed tanking ability, especially when invested into.

High Burst Damage

After factoring in all her skills, Oboro will quite effortlessly be throwing out Bonfire procs that easily hit in the mid-20s, and Ignis procs in the mid to high 30s, both of which will melt most opponents.

Charm

Oboro is one of the cutest females in the game.

Weaknesses

Mediocre Speed

Her Speed sits in a rather middling spot, with Oboro wishing she could have moved some of those points into other stats (or vice versa). It is on the threshold of being passable with an Asset, but in a world where every point of Speed matters, even Donnel, who sits 3 points higher, as well as the crew of fast cavalry lancers such as Oscar and Summer Cordelia, all tend to outclass her in this respect.

Less Optimized than Other Lances

Her stat spread borders on the realm of being slightly too even, many points seemingly wasted in stats she likely won't be utilizing at the same time. Even her strongest aspect, her stellar Defense, ends up being overshadowed by units like Lukas, who despite being infantry, boasts bulk on par with many armored units.
