Bound Hero Battle: Micaiah and Sothe

Another radiant dawn brings us another Bound Hero Battle, and this time we’re clashing with Micaiah and Sothe! Featuring no reinforcements as well as a relatively easy way to get your foes moving risk-free, this is definitely one of the easier Infernal maps to complete -- assuming you take your time, shuffle some Seals or learn some new Skills, and, of course, strategize carefully. Micaiah may throw a wrench into your plans due to the effective damage she deals to not one, but two types of units, but her relatively low Defense and Speed make her an easy target.

Before you begin teambuilding, though it’s completely possible you already possess everything you need to beat this map. Created by Gamepress staff member RedFerrari1998, the video guide below uses only F2P units and some Seals -- see the description for more details. If it doesn’t work for you, though, then read on!

Who to Choose

As is generally true of Bound Hero Battles, the individual units used is very important as they will primarily inform your strategy. There are a few routes one can take depending on what units are available to you, and, of course, adjustment based on the units one possesses is always a possibility.

Tanks

This map has two immediately apparent routes to get it started -- one strike and retreat, and one that demands a red or blue bait unit. Even if you don’t choose to bait initially, though, a tank of any color can still be an excellent choice due to their ability to wall out powerful enemies.

Armors such as Zelgius, Black Knight, Winter Tharja, Fallen Hardin, Hector, LA Hector, Legendary Hector, and Fallen Robin are able to hit hard very upon counterattacking, especially if they’re making use of Quick Riposte or Vengeful Fighter. An amazing F2P option is Fjorm, who is able to tank ranged foes extremely well with her exclusive Special, Ice Mirror, Legendary Ike, whose native Warding Breath grants him accelerated cooldown and extra Resistance, and Black Knight, who boasts a powerful exclusive Special, Black Luna.

Dragons are also very strong tanks, especially when they’re equipped with Lightning Breath (or another Breath and Distant Counter, if you’re feeling fancy). Nowi, Female Corrin, Male Kana, Fae, Myrrh, Legendary Robin, Female Kana, Adult Tiki, Young Tiki, and/or Summer Young Tiki will all likely be able to do the job and do it well.

Also of note is magic tanks, who can help stall out the many powerful magical threats on this map, as well as provide an assist to KO other foes. Julia, Deirdre, Sanaki, Katarina, Arvis, Summer Micaiah, and Michaiah may work well here, but really any unit with decently high Resistance will likely do the trick.

julia is #bestgirl
Magic tanks with lower Speed can add to their coverage by equipping a Breaker Skill. This will guarantee them follow-ups against certain kinds of foes.

Strikers

Although not strictly necessary, the lack of exceptionally powerful foes on this map means that strikers will easily overpower enemies and break through enemy lines. The easiest way to get this map started also involves a ranged striker and a dancer, so that’s something to also consider. Do note that fliers and infantry are preferable here for their maneuverability -- cavalry will struggle to move freely around the map due to the trenches, and may get stuck behind walls where they can be targeted by ranged foes.

In particular, archers can be incredibly potent strikers due to their ability to overpower and/or finish off any enemies your tank may otherwise struggle with, especially if they are equipped with a Brave Bow. Brave Lyn, WF Hinoka, Bridal Cordelia, Summer Takumi, Setsuna, and Klein are potential strikers you may want to use, with a special mention going to Brave Lyn given her F2P status.

Brave and Blade tome wielders can also serve to be useful if your team composition provides them with the appropriate buffs, though speedy mages can also be powerful strikers. Tharja, Bridal Tharja, Reinhardt, Tailtiu, Ishtar, Linde, WT Olwen, SF Nino, and Nino are potential options here.

Hinoka is #savage
Strikers like WF Hinoka are often able to power through potential threats, especially if they're boosted by Drives, Spurs, or buffs.

Refreshers

Refreshers help provide support, may even have a decent offensive presence themselves, and can usually tank a hit or two, if need be. Lene, Olivia, Performing Olivia, YT Olivia, Performing Inigo, Performing Shigure, Performing Azura, Azura, New Year Azura, Bridal Ninian, Ninian, as well as Hoshidan Summer Xander, Ryoma, Elicina, and Micaiah all give the refreshment that high-firepower units need while also possessing the ability to provide an assist to KO an enemy.

Healers

While not generally a great choice over units who can deal heavy damage or dancers, Healers can be incredibly useful in this Bound Hero Battle due to their ability to provide valuable healing to your tanks. Genny, Priscilla, Elise, Maribelle, Wrys, and Lissa are potential additions to a team that may serve you well on this map.

Strategy

Strategizing for this Bound Hero Battle should be fairly simple due to the absence of reinforcements. While it can be difficult to exactly predict what will happen due to IV / Merge variance, here’s some general tips to get you started.

Sothe Strikes Back!

As per usual, you’ll likely want to start off this map by browsing through the foes you’ll be facing, taking note of any particularly potent threats. Most of these enemies aren’t anything to write home about -- there’s a few ploys you’ll have to deal with here and there, nothing tragic -- bit Micaiah and Sothe may present a few issues.

First up is Micaiah. While her low Defense and Speed certainly aren’t doing her any favors, she does carry Distant Def, which makes her a little more bulky against ranged attacks. Additionally, her tome, Thani, allows her to deal effective damage to armored and calvary foes. Considering these units usually have lower Resistance, you’ll likely want to make sure you don’t bait Micaiah with these kinds of units (even if they’re green) -- lest you be in for a nasty surprise once she attacks.

Micaiah, though, is not your biggest, most immediate issue; that would be the man of the hour, Sothe. He carries Cancel Affinity, meaning that the old standby Triangle Adept/Raven tome combo isn’t an option here, and while his Defense and Resistance make him as frail as paper, his high Attack and Speed means that his defenses don’t really matter too much (no need to defend if you nuke everything you attack from orbit). Plus, he boasts a reduced cooldown on Glimmer, meaning that it’ll proc on any unit he doubles, and his dagger, Peshkatz, will debuff your unit as well as buff him and his allies within range when he gets a hit in. Ouch.

sothe is strong :(
While placing a tank on the right may seem like an attractive option, Sothe does complicate the matter somewhat.

For this reason, while baiting to the right is possible, it may be easier to initially tackle this map with a method that keeps your units out of danger. Speaking of which...

Savagely Sound

By now you’ve probably realized that you can pretty easily reach the lancer with a ranged unit and have them be danced or repositioned out of danger -- and something you may want to try is equipping either the Savage Blow Skill or Seal on your striker to deal some chip damage when you attack this foe. Because the enemies in this Bound Hero Battle are grouped close together, this initial attack is a great opportunity to make your life a lot easier in the long run. Not only will it makes foes that much easier to KO, it also will also most probably cause Micaiah to hang in the back of the ranks to use Sacrifice on anyone with lower HP than her. Considering that she’s a main threat here, your units will most likely appreciate the reprieve, even if it only is temporary.

hinoka activates savage blow
Hinoka attacked the lancer and has now been danced to safety -- you can see that her Savage Blow activated to chip away at the other foes within range.

Limit Breaker

Breaker Skills can be a great way to allow certain foes to be dealt with by a unit who would otherwise struggle to go toe-to-toe with them. When combined with a low cooldown Special like Glimmer or Moonbow, you’re all but guaranteed to hit the enemy hard enough to ensure you net the KO if you’re baiting and can counterattack.

julia will net this KO when she procs moonbow.
Julia’s G Tomebreaker allows her to bait the green mage cavalier and KO them on the double with a Moonbow proc.

Drive, Drive, Drive!

Don’t underestimate the effect the Drive Atk Seal can have -- the extra points of damage it allows your units to deal can make the difference between a win and a loss. When combined with the Attack +3 or Initiate Attack Seal, it can cause your unit to deal 6 (!) more damage every time they attack, or 12 more damage if they double. That’s a sizeable difference, and is almost certainly a big enough impact to warrant using it.

drives can make a big difference.
Hinoka is able to net the KO on Sothe due to Azura’s Drive Atk seal.

Amazing Assists

If you’re missing out on a KO and you’re not sure if you’ll survive through the next phase, don’t give up! Even if your unit possesses a Weapons Triangle disadvantage, they can still provide a valuable assist. Do try to keep in mind Special charges though; if that assist will result in a hefty Special proc, it may not be worth the trouble.

Julia provides an assist.
Since this sword fighter has low Res, Julia is almost able to KO him on her own -- thankfully, Fjorm is more than strong enough to finish him off.

If At First You Don’t Succeed

Don’t be fooled by video walkthroughs of any Bound Hero Battle that you watch -- it’s very rare for anyone to beat high-difficulty content (or record a video of themselves doing so!) on their first try.  Additionally, the potential variance in unit builds that Skill Inheritance brought along with the random nature of summoning has resulted in pretty much every single summoner having different building blocks to work with. This, when combined with the high difficulty level of Infernal, may prove frustrating while someone is trying to find the right combination of units and moves. The key thing to keep in mind is that it may take some light Skill Inheritance and seal shuffling as well as multiple tries of the map to find a strategy that works for you. Every single turn you complete gets you one step closer to completing the puzzle. Finally, reading about or watching videos of successful strategies may also help you break through a particularly difficult turn that you can’t complete, or may give you ideas of a new unit to use.

Notes:

* Fjorm must not have a speed bane, so you can use the free one from the Main Story. She should have her base kit, plus a QR3 seal. The one I'm using is +spd -hp. Don't have her? Use a different blue mixed tank that can counter and ORKO a dagger and a tome, as long as they can reach up to 37 speed with buffs, or carry Daggerbreaker.
* This requires Speed Tactic, as Fjorm isn't that fast. Hone Spd 3 alone can suffice if Fjorm has a spd boon. If Fjorm's speed is neutral, a speed spur plus tactic will be required. The skill's native user, Legendary Lyn, is used for this. Running a non-infantry or a dragon in place of Fjorm? Specialized Hone buffs are a viable substitute. Note that this unit should also be ranged or have DC available and should preferably be green.
* Def/Res Tactic: One as a seal, the other as a C skill. If running a spur, have both on your other unit. Otherwise, putting a seal on the Speed Tac user works.
* Other tactic user is a ranged cavalry. L'Arachel, who natively has Res Tactic, fills this spot.
* Fourth unit must not be a blue unit. Cavalry is okay. Hinoka's kinshi alt serves as the fourth member.

This guide will assume that the other units kept their base kits.

Turn 1: Have Fjorm positioned to bait Sothe and the red mage. If you assembled the team correctly, she'll get all three tactic buffs going. Have LLyn positioned right behind her, and move the other two over. Sothe and the red mage will SD.

Turn 2: Position LLyn to lure Micaiah, loop L'Arachel to the bottom of the map, and move Hinoka to the trench tile south of her. Don't worry if you end up triggering Miracle; you can finish her off. Fjorm moves down.

Turn 3: If Miracle triggered, have LLyn finish Micaiah. L'Arachel goes behind Hinoka, out of the green cav's range. If Fjorm's not directly east of LLyn, move her there. The green cav will SD.

Turn 4: Take care of the lance with your ranged units. Fjorm moves west to tank the sword during enemy phase.

Turn 5: Finish the map.
