Tempest Trials - To Defy the Gods

Map

Bonus Allies

Welcome to the eye of the storm! Tempest Trials are a special event which contain a series of maps that you must fight your way through from beginning to end. Losing does not mean game over, as you can retry with multiple teams. Once you’ve completed all the maps in the series, points are awarded based on clear speed (how many turns it took you to clear each map), survivability (how many of your teams were KO’d, if any), and if a bonus unit was included in one of the teams you used. Your total points are tallied and used to unlock various rewards, many of which are exclusive to the Tempest Trials. Additionally, there is a player ranking with large feather rewards given to those with the highest scores.

Basic information about the Tempest Trials+ event:

  • Using a Bonus Ally on your team will increase your score by 40%.
  • Bonus allies gain double EXP and SP, and also are granted stat boosts (HP+10, +4 other stats).
  • Your first two multi-map clears per day earn triple the amount of points. During these two clears, all your units also gain the stat bonuses that bonus units always get.
  • Event duration is 10 days.
  • Rewards are granted for cumulative scores up to 50,000. After you reach this threshold, the only reason to continue to do runs is to raise your global ranking (and therefore get a higher feather reward at the conclusion of the event).

Notable Rewards

Score Reward
1,000 4★ Loki: Spring Trickster
6,000 HP/Spd Seal
10,000 Warding Stance Seal
15,000 5★ Loki: Spring Trickster
20,000 Spd/Res Bond Seal

4* Loki: Spring Trickster

Our Tempest Trials unit this time around is none other than the trickster Loki, having donned bunny ears and a rather… interesting outfit. Her status as a colourless flying archer with 31/34 offenses makes her comparable (if not a slight bit worse) to WF Hinoka, and her Beguiling Bow gives her a nice +2 bonus to her Atk/Spd/Def/Res when her foes’ HP is at 100%. She features Flier Formation 3 at 4 star rarity and Goad Fliers 3 at 5 star rarity, making her excellent fodder even without the use of feathers.

For tips and tricks on using Loki: Spring Trickster, see her Hero Analysis here.

HP/Spd 2 Seal

This Seal grants a unit a flat +4 HP and +2 Spd. If you’re already using all your Speed-boosting Seals and need an alternative, this Seal might do the trick. Otherwise, it doesn’t have much to offer.

Warding Stance Seal

This Seal will give a unit +6 Resistance whenever they are initiated upon by a foe. It’s a fantastic addition to any mixed tank’s kit, especially if they’re already making use of Steady/Warding/Fierce Breath or Stance.

5* Loki: Spring Trickster

A five star version of Spring Loki: Spring Trickster. If you don’t already have a flying archer, she’ll likely be a fantastic addition to your roster – if you’re not looking to heavily invest in her, give her a Brave Bow+ and Death Blow and watch her leave a trail of destruction in her wake!

For tips and tricks on using Loki: Spring Trickster, see her Hero Analysis here.

Spd/Res Bond Seal

This Seal will grant a unit +5 Speed and Resistance when they are positioned adjacent to an ally. While the Speed won’t be useful for slower Resistance tanks and the Resistance won’t serve much use for sweepers, it still might be useful in certain situations (especially if the unit already has a Bond Skill in their A-slot).

All Sacred Seals come at level one, but can be upgraded to their higher leveled iterations in the Sacred Seal Forge. To access the forge, you must complete all Book 1: Chapter 13 story missions, as well as the Intermission: A Power Awakens story mission. After you’ve fulfilled these conditions, the Sacred Seal Forge can be accessed in the menu through Allies > Change Equipment > Sacred Seal Forge.

Teambuilding

If you’re looking to maximize your score and stamina efficiency, care should go into choosing a Tempest Trials team. This section will discuss the general types of units that tend to make a team successful as opposed to specific team compositions. While it would be ideal to have all these units running their optimal build, it’s nowhere near necessary – budget builds and base kits can be perfectly sufficient with enough support.

Some things to consider when composing your team are:

  • Using as many bonus units as possible, as they receive huge stat boosts.
  • A source of healing, such as healing specials or a staff user, will help you keep your offensive units happy and healthy.
  • A clear check for the final map/boss. Nothing is worse than losing a team while your score bonus is active for the day.
  • Weapon Triangle coverage, as the actual units within each map can vary significantly.

The first two runs each day grant all units a stat boost as if they were bonus units. This simplifies team-building for those looking to complete just those runs – which is perfectly viable if the 50 000 point threshold is all you’re trying to reach.

Bonus Units

The first units you’ll want to think about using are of course, the bonus units. With their huge stat bonuses (+10 HP, +4 to all other stats) they will pack much more of a punch than usual. Always endeavor to have at least one bonus unit on your team, as they increase your score by 40%. If you can’t find a way to fit them in, send them into battle in a one-man team then surrender. The hit you’ll take to your score is rather negligible. Do note the score boost Bonus units offer does not stack: a 40% total score bonus will be awarded no matter how many bonus units are on the team.

Spring Veronica - Spring Princess: Veronica is a rather middling green mage who does well when given consistent boosts to her Attack and Speed (which can easily be done with Seals). She performs best with a Blade build, but should be able to take a hit of magical damage if need be.

For tips and tricks on using Spring Veronica: Spring Princess, see her Hero Analysis here.

Spring Bruno - Masked Hare: As a bit of an odd duck (a physically bulky healer? huh.) Bruno at the very least offers the utility that any other healer would offer, which makes him an amazing choice of bonus unit. If you’ve got extra refining stones, be sure to refine his staff to give it the Wrathful effect!

For tips and tricks on using Spring Bruno: Masked Hare, see his Hero Analysis here.

Spring Palla - Eldest Bun-Bun: As a red dagger, Palla might struggle against blues, but the extra stat points the Tempest Trials offer her pushes her Attack and Speed to quite good levels. Her native Pegasus Carrot also allows her to deal effective damage against armors – just keep her away from archers.

For tips and tricks on using Spring Palla: Eldest Bun-Bun, see her Hero Analysis here.

Spring Marisa - Crimson Rabbit: Oh, Marisa, what have they done to you? As yet another decent – but not great – lance flier, Marisa performs a bit better with the Tempest Trial bonus stats and when her foes have full HP. Against reds and blues, though, she should be fine.

For tips and tricks on using Spring Marisa: Crimson Rabbit, see her Hero Analysis here.

Spring Loki - Spring Trickster: As our free Tempest Trials unit, Loki will likely be the Bonus unit many people will use. With her base kit she should perform reasonably well, but if you’re looking for her to be a face of mass destruction, inheriting a Brave Bow+ and Death Blow onto her should do the trick. Pair her with a refresher for even better results!

For tips and tricks on using Spring Loki: Spring Trickster, see her Hero Analysis here.

Spring Catria - Spring Whitewing: As a blue cavalier, Spring Catria already has a lot going for her, but she’s made even better by her exclusive tome (...egg?) giving her a wide-reaching Chill effect. If you keep her HP topped up, she’ll serve you well by heavily debuffing the foe with the lowest Resistance.

For tips and tricks on using Spring Catria: Spring Whitewing, see her Hero Analysis here.

Spring Alfonse - Spring Prince: Bringing to the table a decent statline and cavalry movement, Spring Alfonse should be able to tank most physical foes and deal back heavy damage in the form of a hefty Special proc. Just be sure to keep him away from magical foes due to his low Resistance.

For tips and tricks on using Spring Alfonse: Spring Prince, see his Hero Analysis here.

Spring Sharena - Spring Princess: Two spring princesses?!? Unlike her Emblian counterpart, Spring Sharena features a completely conventional movement type to go along with her bog-standard striker statline. Like Spring Catria, though, her weapon has a Chill effect on the foe with the lowest Resistance, so while she does perform better with a Blade tome, she can offer team support.

For tips and tricks on using Spring Sharena: Spring Prncess, see her Hero Analysis here.

Distant/Close Counter Users

Because your score largely depends on defeating maps in the least amount of turns, it’s usually advisable to bring with at least one unit who can KO most enemies by having their foes come to them. Being able to counterattack regardless of range is a must here, as this unit will be most useful if they can bait both melee and ranged foes – armors and dragons are both good choices.

Sweepers

One of the fastest ways to clear the Tempest Trials is with a powerful ranged attacker wielding a Brave Bow or Blade tome. Combined with a buffer or dancer, they can destroy most units in the trials with ease once they are under the Desperation threshold. Spring Veronica, Spring Palla, Spring Loki, Spring Catria, and Spring Sharena are all sweepers who are also Bonus units, though the tome users would much prefer Blade builds.

Healers

Healers are a staple on Tempest Trials teams, and for good reason. They allow you a wider margin of error in placing units and also enable you to make riskier plays, since you don’t have to worry about HP conservation; not to mention that access to both Dazzling and Wrathful Staff means that healers don’t have to worry about counterattacks from foes, making them valuable allies for providing an assist. Bruno: Masked Hare is not only a healer but is also a Bonus unit, making him an excellent choice of team member for this event.

There are a few types of builds which can be used to heal teams without using a dedicated healer. The first of these is the “Renewal Medic”, a build type which relies on healing from Renewal and the legendary weapon Falchion. Reciprocal Aid is a must-have skill to ensure clean transferral of health to allies, and forging Falchion increases the amount of HP it heals. Another option is a "Sustain Tank" build. With a cooldown -1 weapon such as a Slaying Axe combined with Steady Breath, Quick Riposte and Aether, a unit can charge and fire off their Special every round of combat keeping their health topped up over a long time. Sparkling Boost (natively found on Eir: Merciful Death) is also an option.

Refreshers

These are some of the most potent allies for Tempest Trials, offering both safety and speed to your run. In short, they are great for all the usual reasons, but are affected by their low combat abilities, which can hold them back. While a full kit is likely not necessary, it is a good idea to make sure that your refresher can check at least one kind of foe safely.

Using Autobattle

For those looking to save time, the autobattle feature lets you quickly gain Tempest Trial points with minimal effort. When creating an autobattle team, there are a few considerations:

Difficulty

  • Hard (5 Battles) is the most suitable difficulty for most players, assuming you can field a full team of five star characters. With enough bonus units or merges, it may be possible to do the lower infernal difficulty.

Team Building

  • Team building considerations are mostly the same for manual teams. The AI tends to play recklessly, making tanky units with well-rounded statlines and Distant/Close Counter fare the best.
  • A staff user is a must unless you have multiple units with Aether or other healing Specials. If you choose a dedicated healer, don’t forget to unequip their weapon. Otherwise, the AI will treat them like a ranged attacker and play aggressively with them.
  • Don't forget to pack a bonus unit!
  • Flying units tend to be poor choices unless equipped with Iote's Shield. This is because the AI's reckless playstyle often leaves them in the range of deadly archers.

Examples

  • Distant Counter Units: Xander, Winter Tharja, Fallen Harden, Black Knight, Hector (all versions), Nowi, Hector, Ike, Ike (VL), Adult Tiki, Fae, Zelgius, Legendary Tiki, Fallen Robin, Legendary Robin
  • Sustain Tanks: Brave Ike, Ike, Ike (VL), Raven, Brave Lucina, Leif, Linus
  • Dedicated Healers: Bruno: Spring Hare, any staff-user!
  • Other Healers: Marth: Enigmatic Blade, Marth, Lucina, Chrom, Arvis, Linde, Alm, Eir.
  • Sweepers: Spring Veronica: Spring Princess, Spring Loki: Spring Trickster, Spring Catria: Spring Whitewing, Spring Sharena: Spring Princess, Hinoka: Blue Sky Warrior, Lewyn, Ophelia, Reinhardt, WT Olwen, Brave Lyn, Lute, Reinhardt, Delthea, Lilina, Bridal Cordelia, Nino, Nino (SF).

Threats to Autobattling Teams

  • Triangle Adept
  • Breaker Skills
  • Firesweep Weapons
  • Brave Weapons
  • Effective Weapons (Such as Armorsmashers and Bows)
  • Wrath/Wo Dao/Wo Gun/Harmonic Lance users

Defeating Veronica: Spring Princess

Veronica is yet another flying Tempest Trials boss, and while she luckily isn’t in her Brave form (can you imagine?), she still might prove to be a tricky foe to deal with due to her boosted stats. 55/45 offenses aren’t anything to shake a stick at, and her 31 Resistance and 66 HP combined with her high Speed means KOing her with a mage will likely be difficult. Moreover, when her HP is ≥ 75%, she’ll receive a +4 boost to her Attack, Speed, Defense, and Resistance, making her even more formidable. Thankfully, her A-slot Skill is essentially useless, meaning that you only really need to account for her two other Skills, Chill Res and Guidance.

  • Veronica’s Defense is much, much lower than her Resistance, making it the better stat to target. Brave weapons or units carrying Bold Fighter will be very useful here.
  • Since you only receive a score penalty if your whole team is KO’d, consider sacrificing one of your units to get Veronica to below 75% HP. That way she won’t receive stat bonuses from her weapon, making her easier to deal with.
  • As always, using the weapons triangle to your advantage is a great idea. A strong red who can counterattack at-distance and makes use of of Vengeful Fighter or Quick Riposte should be able to KO Veronica fairly easily. Examples include Ike (VL), Adult Tiki, Young Tiki, Black Knight, Zelgius, and Ryoma.
  • Veronica is a flier without Iote’s Shield, so the typical rules apply – pretty much any archer who so much as glances in her direction will cause her to explode into a flurry of feathers, especially if they’re using a Brave Bow. Some good, accessible options include Klein, Spring Loki, and Brave Lyn.

This team is pretty simple in its strategy. Legault buffs everyone with Atk Tactic; then gets in and debuffs the enemy (make sure he runs Desperation). His high speed can allow him to run the Flashing Blade Seal, which when combined with Darting Blow is always going to charge. An AOE Special is recommended as the units in Tempest Trials tend to stick close together. Alfonse hits like a truck with the bonus unit buffs and Fjorm is a ranged damage sponge with Ice Mirror, Distant Counter, and Atk/Def Bond there are few people that can one round KO her outside of green mages and Emerald Axe wielders. Lastly, New Year's Azura comes with Earth Dance. When giving her the Torrent Dance Sacred Seal she can even make Legault bulky (although it is best to give this double buffed up song to Fjorm to make her even more absurdly tanky than she currently is).

Show Explanation

This team right here is perfect for this TT thanks to Catria’s weapon having built in Chill Atk/Def 2 and with how Hríd & Gunnthrá’s weapons being based around debuffs they’re essentially gonna make almost any unit a complete and utter joke. Along with Hríd’s, Gunnthrá’s, and Catria’s default B skills also giving debuffs almost every AI is going to have at least 2 debuffs for Hríd and Gunnthrá to take advantage of regardless of phase. Finally B!Veronica is on this team to be the healer as well as giving -4 to all stats on the enemy which adds up with this debuff heavy team.
