Assets

  • +ATK: Given Mathilda’s lackluster base Attack of 29, she will highly appreciate the boost in offensive power. An Attack asset is particularly important for any build where Mathilda is intending to serve primarily as a fighter. For a support set, a Resistance Asset might be preferable depending on the scenario.

  • +RES: Resistance is a great choice of Asset for a support Mathilda. Her high base Resistance allows her to make great use of Sabotage skills and a Resistance Asset would help to ensure that she can debuff intended targets. It also helps with utilizing Ploy skills if one wishes.

Neutral

  • SPD: Mathilda’s Speed of 32 is underwhelming. While Speed stacking is an option, Attack and Resistance Assets have easier application.

Flaws

  • -HP/DEF: Neither Mathilda’s HP or Defense is good and will be frail to physical attacks regardless of which is picked as a Flaw. Ideally, one using Mathilda should merge her at least once to remove the Flaw. If this is not an option though, either stat works well as a Flaw.

Show Explanation/Analysis

Preferred IV: +ATK / -DEF or -HP

Attack is Mathilda’s best Asset choice for this set in order to maximize damage output. While she should ideally be merged if she’ll be used as an AR tank, either Defense or HP is fine for the Flaw if she’s unmerged.

Weapon: Knightly Lance (+Eff)

  • Knightly Lance is a good personal weapon that functions like a Slaying Lance at base.

  • When refined, she can buff both herself and her support partner, helping with both her own combat and her partners.

Assist: Reposition / Player Preference

Special: Noontime / Sol

  • Noontime will have a cooldown of just one thanks to Knightly Lance which will help Mathilda with keeping herself healthy during combat.

  • If Mathilda is supported by Brave Lucina, then Sol becomes a strong option.

Passive A: Distant Counter

  • Distant Counter is highly important for any Aether Raids tank due to the prevalence of ranged units on defense teams. This skill will allow Mathilda to counterattack such threats.

Passive B: Lull Atk/Def

  • Lull Atk/Def will provide two very useful benefits to Mathilda. First, it will allow her to nullify any Attack or Defense buffs that her foe might have. Second, it debuffs both those stats regardless of if they’re buffed or not.

Passive C: Pulse Smoke / Atk Smoke

  • Pulse Smoke is amazing for countering defense teams that utilize Pulse skills to instantly charge their Special.

  • Atk Smoke is a cheaper but still powerful option that helps with Mathilda’s survivability.

Sacred Seal: Quick Riposte / Fierce Stance

  • Given Mathilda’s lackluster Speed, Quick Riposte is extremely helpful for securing follow-up attacks.

  • Fierce Stane is a strong alternative that helps with Mathilda’s damage output on Enemy Phase.

Moonbow C Ward Cavalry
Alternate: Distant Guard 3

Alternate: Drive Def 2

Show Explanation/Analysis

Preferred IV: +RES or +ATK / -DEF or -HP

Resistance is a strong option for an Asset to help with Mathilda activating Sabotage. Attack is also a good Asset choice. Either Defense or HP will make for a fine Flaw if unmerged.

Weapon: Knightly Lance (+Eff)

  • Knightly Lance serves as a good support weapon, letting Mathilda buff her support partner in all stats when in support range.

  • While she is weaker than Male Corrin in terms of support, being a cavalier does give her the niche of utilizing cavalry skills which can make her superior for supporting another cavalier.

Assist: Reposition / Player Preference

Special: Moonbow

  • Mathilda won’t be seeing much combat in this set, but for those times she needs to fight, Moonbow is simple but effective.

Passive A: Fort. Def/Res / Fortress Res / Fury (3 or 4)

  • Fort. Def/Res grants a large defensive boost at the cost of some of Mathilda’s Attack. This makes her harder to defeat and helps her to utilize Sabotage skills.

  • Fortress Res is a cheaper option that helps in a similar manner to Fort. Def/Res but is overall weaker.

  • Fury is another great option. The all-around buff to stats helps her in all areas, including combat if necessary.

Passive B: Sabotage Atk / Chill Atk

  • Sabotage skills can be utilized very well by Mathilda thanks to her high Resistance. Sabotage Atk is the most consistently useful Sabotage skill, helping her allies with their survivability.

  • Chill skills function similarly to Sabotage skills in that they can debuff at any range but have different activation conditions. Chill Atk is far more accessible than Sabotage Atk and is a good budget option.

Passive C: Ward Cavalry / Goad Cavalry / Distant Guard

  • Being a cavalier is Mathilda’s main niche as a support unit, allowing her to take Ward Cavalry or Goad Cavalry to support fellow cavaliers.

  • If she’s not supporting a cavalier, then Distant Guard is a strong option for support.

Sacred Seal: Drive Res / Drive Def / Fortress Res / Ploy Passive

  • One of the defensive Drive options makes for a strong choice of Sacred Seal, helping whoever she’s supporting and other nearby allies with taking hits.

  • Fortress Res can help with ensuring that Sabotage skills activate.

  • Mathilda’s high Resistance makes Ploy skills viable options too for extra debuffing.

Introduction

The legendary knight of the Deliverance herself, Mathilda comes to our side and joins us in battle! In Heroes, Mathilda is a lance cavalier with a heavy focus on Resistance. While she does possess stellar Resistance and a strong personal weapon, the Mathilda hype sadly stops there.

Starting with Mathilda’s strengths, the most notable is her personal weapon: Knightly Lance. This is nothing more than a Slaying Lance at base, but becomes a strong utility weapon when refined. This lance makes her an alternative take on Male Corrin. Statistically, her base Resistance helps her with fighting magical foes and utilizing skills such as Sabotage and Ploy.

The rest of her stats leave a lot to be desired sadly. She possesses a lackluster 29/32 offensive spread, putting her on the weaker side of offensive capabilities for lance units. On top of this, her physical bulk is quite poor with low HP and Defense.

All of this combines to make Mathilda a unit that has a definite niche as a support for cavaliers but is still tricky to recommend. As a support unit, she falters behind Male Corrin in general and she should typically only be used over him for supporting cavaliers. As a combat unit, she falls behind many different units both offensively and defensively, but can still function as a good tank with the right setup.

Strengths

Knightly Lance

Knightly Lance is Mathilda’s personal weapon and is her main draw. At base, this is simply a 16 might Slaying Lance. When refined though, this weapon grants +3 to all stats except HP to her and her support partner when she’s within support range of them. This is similar to what Male Corrin has, but Mathilda trades a slight amount of the support in order to buff herself. This makes it a weapon that she can use both for support and combat-oriented builds, making it a versatile weapon.

Excellent Resistance

At 34 neutral, Mathilda has a very high Resistance stat. With Resistance boosting skills, she can resist magic effectively. This also helps her in a support role with activating skills based on the user’s Resistance such as Sabotage skills and Ploy skills.

Weaknesses

Lackluster Offensive Capabilities

Mathilda’s biggest hindrance is her offensive stat line. With just 29 Attack and 32 Speed, Mathilda struggles on both ends of the spectrum. Knightly Lance does help to offset some of this issue, but it’s still not enough to make her a considerably strong offensive unit.

Low Physical Bulk

With 24 Defense and 35 HP, Mathilda will take considerable damage from foes that deal physical damage. While she can often take a hit when not at a disadvantage, it will only take a couple of physical hits to bring her down.
