Movement Restricting Weapons Initiate

Overview

These weapons come with a unique effect: If the unit initiates combat, the defending unit has their movement restricted to just one space. Of course, this can severely limit a foe’s movement, especially dangerous units such as Cavalry and Flier types with many attack options. These weapons have one hard restriction: The wielder must initiate combat in order to trigger the skill’s effects. There is another restriction of sorts: This effect only comes on a legendary weapon only usable by Leo, and on staves, making it only obtainable by a handful of units.

Synergy

Excepting Leo, staff-wielders have many restrictions which prevents them from synergizing builds with this effect. Most notably, Drag Back and Hit and Run cannot be used to put an attacker outside of retaliation range as they are limited to melee units. Instead, making good use of this effect should take into consideration the terrain. Positioning a unit on one side of a river, mountain or forest can let them wear down an opponent over many turns, while preventing their retaliation thanks to movement limitations. Use of a Dancer or support skills such as Smite or Reposition can let an attacker use this ability and escape counterattack easily.

Weaknesses

The biggest flaw with the effect of this skill is that is assumes that the opponent survives combat. There are many powerful tomes such as Blade tomes which can instead be deployed to KO an enemy instantly. The effect is really only valuable versus melee units, as ranged ones can hit back immediately and over gaps. Additionally, it has no effect on armor, as they are restricted to one space movement anyway. Finally, weapons that are dependent on maps are unreliable, especially in modes such as the Arena where map selection is randomized.
