IV Sets

Key stats worth increasing through nature if possible.
Complementary stats that matter, but not to the point of picking them over key stats for nature increase.
Relatively worthless stat that can safely be decreased through nature.

  • +RES: Resistance is easily Jagen’s best choice of Asset, as increasing his already excellent Resistance even further allows him to tank magic damage with greater ease. This Asset also increases the power of Resistance scaling specials, such as Iceberg and Glacies, which are Jagen’s main source of damage.

  • +ATK: An Attack Asset is also a decent choice, as it brings Jagen’s base 27 Attack to a much more respectable 30 base, increasing his damage output overall.

  • HP: Jagen’s HP is a fairly average 37. A Flaw in HP is acceptable if no other IV’s are available, but if possible HP should remain neutral to preserve Jagen’s excellent magical bulk.

  • -DEF/-SPD: Both Jagen’s Defense and Speed incredibly poor and have very little impact on his performance if reduced. Of the two, a Flaw in Speed is preferred as it’s simply too low for Jagen to make any use of, and a Speed Flaw leaves Jagen’s defenses untouched. However, Jagen’s Defense is so poor he will struggle to survive more than one physical hit regardless. As such, Defense remains a good choice of Flaw as well.

Show Explanation/Analysis

Preferred IV: +RES / -SPD or -DEF

  • Jagen prefers an Asset in Resistance to ideal to capitalize on his incredible Magical bulk, and to increase the damage he deals with Resistance scaling Specials such as Iceberg. Speed and Defense are Jagen’s ideal Flaws as they do little to affect his primary role as a magic damage tank.

Weapon: Berkut’s Lance+(+RES) / Slaying Lance+(+RES)

  • Berkut’s Lance grants a massive bonus to Resistance during the Enemy Phase, making it even more difficult for magical damage foes to KO Jagen. In addition, it can be refined to grant additional Resistance as well as a helpful bonus to HP.

  • A Slaying Lance is a serviceable alternative, trading a Resistance bonus during Enemy Phase for quicker Special activations, which helps Jagen in both Player and Enemy Phase.

Assist: Reposition / Preference

Special: Iceberg / Glacies

  • Iceberg is an excellent special choice for Jagen, as it scales excellently off his high Resistance and skills such as Warding Stance 4, in addition to having a reasonably quick cooldown.

  • Glacies is also an option if one wishes to maximize Jagen’s Special damage at the cost of a longer cooldown.

Passive A: Warding Stance 4 / Fort Def/Res 3

  • Warding Stance further bolsters Jagen’s magic tanking abilities, granting him a massive +8 Resistance during Enemy Phase in addition to Guard, allowing Jagen to deny magic foes potentially dangerous Special triggers.

  • Fort Def/Res can also be used to increase Jagen’s Defense and Resistance, but it decreases Jagen’s already low Attack even further, making him even more reliant on Special activations to inflict any damage.

Passive B: Mystic Boost / Quick Riposte

  • Mystic Boost grants Jagen fantastic self sustain by restoring 6 HP after combat. It also nullifies staff users Wrathful Staff and effective damage, but Jagen would take little damage from these foes regardless.

  • Quick Riposte allows Jagen to perform follow-up attacks during the Enemy Phase, allowing him to activate Iceberg in one round if the enemy performs a follow-up attack(which is very likely given Jagen’s incredibly poor Speed).

Passive C: Even Res Wave / Preference

  • Even Res Wave grants Jagen an additional +6 buff to Resistance on even turns, but other C slot skills such as cavalry buffs and Drives can also work well and allow Jagen to support his team.

Sacred Seal: Warding Stance / Close Defense

  • The Warding Stance Sacred Seal is ideal to maximize Jagen’s Resistance during Enemy Phase, making him nearly insurmountable by any foes who inflict magical damage.

  • The Close Defense Sacred Seal can also be used to grant Jagen a sizeable boost to both of his defenses against melee enemies during Enemy Phase.

Retirement Plans (Distant Counter)

Build by
Slaying Lance+ (+Res) A Distant Counter
Reposition B Quick Riposte 3
Glacies C Even Atk Wave 3
IVsSFierce Stance 3
Alternate: Distant Def 3

Show Explanation/Analysis

Preferred IV: +ATK / -SPD

  • For a Distant Counter set, Jagen prefers an increase to his lacking damage output to ensure as many KO’s on mages as possible. Jagen’s Speed is the ideal Flaw as lowering it further hardly affects his performance.

Weapon: Slaying Lance+(+RES)

  • A Slaying Lance is Jagen’s Preferred weapon when utilizing Distant Counter, as quicker access to his Specials grants Jagen more KO’s during the Enemy Phase. It also allows Jagen to utilize Specials with slower cooldown such as Glacies more effectively.

Assist: Reposition / Preference

Special: Glacies

  • For a Distant Counter set, Glacies is chosen over Iceberg as Jagen’s Special as it inflicts considerable damage thanks to Jagen’s excellent Resistance, which Jagen sorely needs to KO foes due to his lacking damage output.

Passive A: Distant Counter

  • Distant Counter is pivotal to the functioning of this build, as it allows Jagen to counterattack and potentially KO mages on Enemy Phase, whom he will have little trouble tanking due to his high Resistance.

Passive B: Quick Riposte

  • Quick Riposte is ideal to secure as many KO’s during Enemy Phase as possible, as Jagen’s Attack is simply too low to reliably One-shot all but the frailest of mages.

Passive C: Even Atk Wave / Preference

  • Wave skills remain a solid option for Jagen, although Even Atk Wave is preferred to secure more KO’s during Enemy Phase when active. What C slot skill Jagen uses is largely up to preference, however.

Sacred Seal: Fierce Stance / Distant Def

  • Fierce Stance grants Jagen a much needed +6 boost to Attack during Enemy Phase, letting him maximize his damage output.

  • Distant Def is a good alternative, increasing Jagen’s Defense and Resistance when attacked by ranged foes.

As Marth’s Guardian and Advisor, Jagen is a veteran knight with a long history of battle. Unfortunately, the years of fighting and aging have worn him down, and as a result, Jagen’s BST is significantly lower than that of his contemporaries. None of Jagen’s stats hit values above 30 aside from his excellent 35 Resistance. In particular, Jagen’s terrible offensive spread of 27/24 means he will struggle to do any real damage to his foes, and his physical bulk is also incredibly lacking at a mere 62 total, which in conjunction with his low Speed leaves him easily susceptible to being KO’d in one round by physical foes.

Jagen’s Resistance is his main selling point. At Base 35, his Resistance is not only the highest among cavaliers, but one of the highest in the game. As a result, Jagen will inflict massive amounts of damage with Resistance scaling specials while taking very little damage from even the strongest of magical damage threats. In addition, Jagen’s status as a cavalry unit allows him to receive support from the powerful cavalry buffs, letting him improve his poor damage output to some extent on a cavalry based team, while buffing his cavalry teammates himself.

Unfortunately, there is very little reason to use Jagen over nearly any other lance cavalier. His role as a Distant Counter cavalier is completely eclipsed by Mathilda and Peri, who both possess significantly better statlines, and in Peri’s case, a powerful exclusive weapon. Jagen also has nothing to offer in terms of offensive utility over other options such as Oscar and Sirius, who both possess much better stats overall in addition to exclusive weapons which bolster their offensive utility. Jagen ultimately succumbs to the fate of his archetype to be eclipsed by the young, and he’s best left on the sidelines unless one desires a maximum Resistance cavalier at the expense of all else.

Incredible Resistance

Jagen’s Resistance is one of the highest in the game at a stellar base 35. This allows Jagen to tank magical damage with ease and deal considerable damage with Resistance scaling specials such as Iceberg and Glacies.

As a cavalier, Jagen gains increased movement as well as access to the powerful cavalry buffs.

Awful Statline

Outside of Resistance and HP, Jagen’s stats are incredibly lacking. with a paltry 27/24 offensive statline, Jagen will struggle to deal considerable damage to all but the frailest of foes. In addition, Jagen’s poor Defense of 25 leaves him unlikely to survive more than 1 hit of physical damage.

Jagen’s status as a cavalier gives him a weakness to effective weaponry, in addition to making trenches and forests difficult to traverse.

Jagen is almost completely outclassed by other lance cavaliers in most roles he can perform due to their significantly better statlines and access to exclusive weaponry.
