Boons

  • +SPD: While Odin has one of the worst Attack stats in the game, he can work around it thanks to his access to Blade tomes. A Speed boon will help him both offensively and defensively by allowing him to double more opponents while avoiding getting doubled himself.

  • +ATK: This isn’t quite as good as +SPD, but a +ATK boon can be useful to help fix Odin’s pitifully low Attack stat.

Banes

  • -HP/-DEF/-RES: Any of these three banes will work, since the difference is fairly minimal. Odin’s defenses are identical, and he has enough mixed bulk (particularly with a refined weapon and buffs) that he’s generally not in danger of getting KO’d in a single hit from non-green threats.

Odin is yet another unit that showcases how a single refine can drastically alter their effectiveness; his unique tome, Odin’s Grimoire, is not only a significantly stronger version of a standard Blade tome (1 additional Mt as well as removing the Special cooldown penalty), but also can be further refined. The unique Atk/Spd Link refine effect allows Odin to combine it with the Def/Res Link B skill to be able to buff both an ally as well as himself with +6 to all stats. This offers him a massive amount of flexibility, as he can function as an incredibly potent support unit solely by utilizing a movement Assist skill while still retaining fantastic combat potential thanks to having remarkably easy access to max buffs.

Due to Link skills requiring the use of either an ally or Odin’s Assist, Odin is well suited toward an Enemy Phase oriented setup since he won’t be able to initiate combat on his own after using his Assist on an ally. This also works well with his statline, since his decent bulk allows him to be surprisingly tanky, particularly in conjunction with his easy access to buffs. Close Counter is an excellent skill for this purpose, since it allows Odin to effectively manage a large number of melee threats. Alternatively, both Life and Death and Fury are acceptable alternatives as simple stat boosts to increase Odin’s potency.

Def/Res Link is exceptionally powerful on Odin, as he alone can combine two different Link skills thanks to his unique weapon refine. Being able to buff all stats with +6 for both himself and an ally gives Odin an incredible amount of flexibility and versatility since he can turn himself into a massive powerhouse while also granting excellent support to another ally at the same time. If Def/Res Link is unavailable or unneeded, then either Quick Riposte or Guard will work to increase his effectiveness in combat. Guard is important as it allows  Odin to be able to handle opponents with powerful Specials (such as armored enemies), but isn’t strictly necessary thanks to Odin being able to KO a lot of common threats in a single hit with a buffed Blade tome attack such as Ayra and Karla.

Odin’s C skill is entirely up to preference; however, Atk Smoke is a decent option that can greatly increase Odin’s longevity when taking on multiple threats. For his Seal, Quick Riposte is very useful for ensuring that Odin can double enemies that engage on him (however, this may not be strictly necessary since Odin’s Speed can get surprisingly high with a +SPD IV as well as buffs). Close Def is a good option if running Quick Riposte as a B skill to increase Odin’s bulk further. Finally, Speed +3 is a decent option to cover most situations if the alternatives are unavailable.

This build is fairly similar to the first in that it still relies on Odin’s unique weapon refine to fuel most of his power, but it focuses more on Odin’s support capabilities as well as opting into Player Phase prowess over Enemy Phase. Running support skills on Odin like Drive Spd and Drive Atk means that he has much less skills to work with, which can make it difficult for him to be effective on Enemy Phase since he’s lacking skills like Guard and Quick Riposte. However, a Player Phase set is fairly simple since all Odin really needs to shine is buffs to fuel his Blade tome as well as an offensive A skill like Death Blow (Death Blow 4 is ideal, but 3 works just fine for budget).

If Def/Res Link is unavailable or unneeded (such as if running a Tactics team with Def Tactic and Res Tactic), then Odin can utilize other useful B skills such as Special Spiral and Chill Atk. Special Spiral allows Odin to be an incredibly effective nuke; after the first combat, he will have Glimmer active after every combat. Since Glimmer’s damage scales with a Blade tome’s bonus damage, Odin can deal massive amounts of damage with a single activation. Chill Atk (or any other Chill skill based on preference) simply increases Odin’s support capabilities further. Finally, Desperation is a decent budget option for Odin’s B skill - make sure to use +SPD or +ATK IV on Odin and either Fury or Life and Death over Death Blow to ensure that he has enough Speed to double.

Introduction

The almighty Odin was once considered easily one of the weakest characters in Fire Emblem Heroes, both literally and figuratively. Sporting an atrocious Attack stat of 22, Odin seriously struggled with dealing significant damage to his opponents without lots of buff support from his teammates to fuel his Blade tome. However, that all changed once the refine nation attacked; Odin’s new unique weapon, Odin’s Grimoire, drastically changed the way that Odin functions. While at his core he is still reliant on buffs to fuel a Blade tome in order to work around his pathetic Attack, Odin now has much, much easier access to said buffs thanks to the refine giving him access to Atk/Spd Link. Furthermore, he can uniquely pair this with Def/Res Link to get +6 buffs to all of his stats, giving him one of easiest methods of accessing full +6 buffs as an infantry unit (all while maintaining access to other skill slots).

Odin now functions as a fantastic support unit that can also be a potent fighter in his own right. Even if he never actually enters combat himself, he is still an excellent asset to the team since he can just use his own Assist to provide buffs to his teammates. However, that is also one of his biggest weaknesses; in order to fuel Odin’s buffs, someone needs to use their Assist in order to activate them. It’s important to note that Legendary Lucina is a uniquely powerful ally for Odin, as her Future Vision allows her to activate Odin’s Links with significantly less opportunity cost.

Strengths

Odin’s Grimoire

The simple addition of this weapon completely revolutionized Odin’s effectiveness. In addition to being a strong upgrade to a standard Blade tome (+1 Mt and lacks the Special cooldown penalty), it can be further refined with either stats or the Atk/Spd Link effect.

Excellent Buffing Capability

Thanks to Odin’s Grimoire granting him access to the Atk/Spd Link effect built-in to his weapon, Odin can grant +6 buffs to all four stats to both himself and an ally with the use of a movement  Assist.

Highly Versatile

Since Odin buffs both himself and his ally with his Links, he is highly versatile since he can use his movement Assist at the same time as buffing. This allows him to do things such as buffing both himself and an ally while simultaneously using Reposition to get an ally out of danger AND putting himself into position to engage an enemy on Enemy Phase.

Decent Mixed Bulk

Thanks to his decent HP pool as well as workable defenses, Odin is bulky enough to be able to tank a hit or two from most non-green threats, particularly if he can buff himself up beforehand.

Good Availability

Since Odin is available for summon in the 3-4 star pool, he is pretty easy to obtain proper IVs for as well as multiple copies of for merging.

Weaknesses

High Investment

Odin’s best traits come out when he has access to quad buffs from Links, but Def/Res Link is a difficult skill to obtain. Without it, Odin becomes much less appealing as while +6 to Attack and Speed is highly effective, it’s not nearly as impressive as +6 to all four stats.

Assist Reliant

Since Odin’s Links are activated by movement Assists, he only performs at his best when either he or an ally sacrifices their turn to use their movement Assist. This can be worked around by smart positioning or by having Legendary Lucina as a teammate, but it is definitely something to keep in mind when using Odin.

Pitiful Attack

It’s impossible to discuss Odin without mentioning his atrocious Attack stat - 22 base means that without a buffed up Blade tome, Odin struggles to deal significant damage to his opponents (though the fact that Odin deals magic damage dampens this somewhat). Thankfully, Odin’s Grimoire goes a very long way to fixing Odin’s damage problems.
