Grand Hero Battle: Garon

For the glory of Nohr! King Garon takes center stage in this Grand Hero Battle, and yes, you will likely be uttering groans of increasing discomfort yourself -- this map is yet another that features reinforcements, and their spawn points are particularly troublesome. It’s likely you will need to repeat this stage quite a few times; in order to parse out how you’re going to deal with foes that appear suddenly, you’ll have to know who they are and what they’re capable of.

Of course, there’s always the possibility that you’ll have to go backwards in order to deal with a certain enemy that’s giving you a lot of trouble, and that’s especially true here. Don’t get discouraged if you end up having to change your strategy -- every time you start the map over is an opportunity to try something new. If you’re purposeful with your moves, anticipate what you know is coming, and build your team carefully from the start, you should prove to be victorious. Just keep trying to break on through and you just might surprise yourself with what you’re capable of.

Who to Choose

As is generally true of Grand Hero Battles, the individual units used is very important as they will primarily inform your strategy. There are a few routes one can take depending on what units are available to you, and, of course, adjustment based on the units one possesses is always a possibility.

Tanks

The enemies on this map will move regardless of if you bait or strike them, but that doesn’t mean a tank will be useless here. In fact, they will often serve as valuable walls that will protect your squishier units from harm -- all while charging powerful Specials that can help break through the enemy lines.

Armors such as Zelgius, Black Knight, Winter Tharja, Fallen Hardin, Brave Hector, Hector, LA Hector, Legendary Hector, Brave Ephriam and Fallen Robin are able to hit hard very upon counterattacking, especially if they’re making use of Quick Riposte or Vengeful Fighter. They do, however, need to be careful of the red sword carrying an Armorsmasher, which will deal extra damage to armors. Calvary tanks like Xander, Camus, Quan, and Sigurd perform better with class-specific buffs, and Sigurd is notable for his ability to tank a fair bit of magic damage due to Divine Tyrfing and the Crusader’s Ward. They too have to be cautious, though, as a red mage will spawn that carries the Keen Gronnwolf tome which will deal extra damage to them. An amazing F2P option is Fjorm, who is able to tank ranged foes extremely well with her exclusive Special, Ice Mirror, and Legendary Ike, whose native Warding Breath grants him accelerated cooldown and extra Resistance.

Dragons are also very strong tanks, especially when they’re equipped with Lightning Breath (or another Breath and Distant Counter, if you’re feeling fancy). Nowi, Female Corrin, Male Kana, Fae, Myrrh, Legendary Robin, Female Kana, Adult Tiki, Young Tiki, and/or Summer Young Tiki will all likely be able to do the job and do it well.

the great wall of sigurd
Sigurd is an excellent tank with a solid base kit. He can also make use of and give class-specific buffs, which will serve to make his cavalry allies a force to be reckoned with in their own right.

Strikers

Because of the amount of enemies that will rush you on this map, it is highly recommended that you use a striker if you can. A Brave striker(s) + Refreshers team composition is perfectly viable here, though a mixed team composition will likely require less support.

In particular, archers can be incredibly potent strikers due to their ability to overpower and/or finish off any enemies your tank may otherwise struggle with, especially if they are equipped with a Brave Bow. Brave Lyn, WF Hinoka, Bridal Cordelia, Summer Takumi, Setsuna, and Klein are potential strikers you may want to use.

Alternatively, melee Brave users are able to hit foes twice without retaliation, and may even quad hit if they outspeed an enemy. Cherche, Cordelia, Elincia, and WT Reinhardt are all great Brave users who can make excellent use of class-specific buffs, though really any speedy unit making use of Desperation who can get their HP the required ≤ 75% threshold will work.

Brave and Blade tome wielders can also serve to be useful if your team composition provides them with the appropriate buffs, though speedy mages can also be powerful strikers. Tharja, Bridal Tharja, Reinhardt, Tailtiu, Ishtar, Linde, Ophelia, WT Olwen, Lewyn, SF Nino, and Nino are potential options here, especially if they are equipped with a Breaker skill to add to their coverage.

Refreshers

Refreshers help provide support, may even have a decent offensive presence themselves, and can usually tank a hit or two, if need be. Lene, Silvia, Olivia, and all the other dancers/singers give the refreshment that high-firepower units need while also possessing the ability to provide an assist to KO an enemy.

Healers

Due to every healer having access to the Wrathful Staff refinement, they can serve as incredibly potent colorless pseudo-mages -- who can heal to boot! Brave Veronica is particularly notable due to her excellent exclusive weapon that prevents counterattacks (among other things), access to the Wrathful Staff Skill, and great support unity, but other healers like Genny, Priscilla, Elise, Maribelle, Nanna, Ethlyn, Wrys, and Lissa are potential additions to a team that may serve you well.

brave vero is bae.
Brave Veronica is an exceptional healer due to her great Attack -- not to mention that she can hold her own in battle with ease.

Buffers

As units that offer extra utility, buffers typically fit one of the above roles while also supporting your other units. Because of the high difficulty of this map, bringing some extra buff skills will likely help ease some of the burden -- especially if you make use of class-specific ones.

Because of Skill Inheritance, any unit can be a buffer with enough investment -- many Drives, Spurs, Hones, Fortifies, and Dual Rallies are readily accessible on 4 star units, and can be further stacked with seals for maximum coverage. Tactics seals are also easily accessible and provide a hefty +6 boost to one stat. Notable options who natively provide buffs through their exclusive weapons include YT Olivia, Performing Azura, Brave Veronica, Eirika, and Ephraim, while Brave Lucina, New Year Corrin, and New Year Azura are able to stack Drives through theirs.

Strategy

Strategizing for this Grand Hero Battle may prove to be a bit difficult due to reinforcements -- and their awful timing. While it can be difficult to exactly predict what will happen due to IV / Merge variance, here’s some general tips to get you started.

Starting Strong

If you’re a dedicated reader of these guides, you’ll know by now that most of these maps are won or lost before they even start. While it may be tempting to jump right in, knowing (and loving!) your enemy will help you not only choose your units, but also figure out where to begin.

Because reinforcements will spawn on the second turn, you have some difficult choices to make on the first. Should you focus on trying to KO a foe, or shore up and prepare for the oncoming onslaught? While there’s many avenues you can take, the team composition you’ve chosen should make some decisions for you. Armors probably shouldn’t tangle with the Armorsmasher sword fighter, for instance, while blue and colorless units will want to stay far, far away from the range of the green mage cavalier with Gronnraven and Triangle Adept.

mage cavs hurt my soul. doesn't stop me from using them, though...
This foe also carries Poison Strike, so be aware that it will deal +10 (non-lethal) damage after combat.

Something else to keep in mind is that since the healer carries Gravity+, your units won’t easily be able to retreat if they’re hit by her (or are in the two space vicinity of a unit that’s hit by her). While this may not be a problem if your tank is particularly beefy, it can prove to be troublesome if you don’t have a clear answer to the other units that populate the top of the map.

apparently being hit with a staff also glues your feet to the floor. who knew?
While it would be convenient to get rid of this healer right away, being stuck smack-dab in the middle of the enemy's forces maybe isn't the best idea.

For these reasons, it will probably best to attack the lance armor… who carries Wary Fighter, because nothing on this map can be simple. The easiest way to bypass this is a Brave weapon, Lancebreaker, or a combination of the two -- a powerful unit with a Hammer or Slaying Hammer may also do the trick, but they may need to make use of Hit and Run or Drag Back in order to retreat out of danger. Blade tomes are also an option -- you don’t have to worry about follow-ups if you defeat the enemy in one hit!

not so wary now, are you, friend? because you're KO'd. ha, I'm a genius.
Wary Fighter is annoying, but not insurmountable. While normally the combination of a Brave weapon and Lancebreaker would only grant Reinhardt two opportunities to attack, the interaction of these weapons/Skills actually causes a Speed check to occur. Since Reinhardt is under the effects of Hone Cavalry, he just manages to outspeed this foe and therefore quads it.

Do note that it isn’t strictly necessary to finish off this foe -- in fact, not doing so can work to your advantage. If you make use of the Savage Blow Skill/seal combo, you can deal 14 damage to almost every foe at the top of this map. This cause some interesting interactions with the healer AI and could serve to make her less of an issue. Either way, once the armor is damaged or KO’d, you can make use of a refresher + Reposition strategy to move out of range.

Hope For The Best...

As was mentioned above, anticipating reinforcements is quite possibly the most important part of strategizing on this map, and that hasn’t become any less true in the few minutes you’ve taken to reach this section. If these foes catch you off guard, it’ll be difficult for you to recover -- so when extra enemies come knocking, you better be prepared with an answer.

Positioning can be key here; a single Hone, Drive, or Spur can often make the difference between netting a KO or not. If you’re having trouble, see if any of your units can take advantage of a simple Speed boost -- this can be done through a visible buff, in-combat buff, seal, or Skill (assuming you’re not using a certain Skill to survive something specific). If you’ve really hit a wall, use a class-specific team, since they can make use of particularly potent buffs. Calvary teams are a particularly accessible option, and Hone Cavalry is one of the easiest class-specific hones to obtain (found on 4 star Gunter). If you’re unable to do this, tactic seals offer a hefty +6 Defense or Resistance buff if you’re using a mixed-class team -- but really, any offensive or defensive boost helps.

cav buffs, man. just... cav buffs.
Brave Veronica is able to KO both of these foes (once she’s refreshed) due to the Hone Cavalry buff she’s received from Reinhardt.

Gotta Go Fast…?

Sometimes, even though your unit outspeeds an enemy, they can’t perform a follow-up attack. If this happens, don’t panic! It’s not a bug, it’s a feature. Use your detective skills and do a little snooping… and you should find that an unexpected Drive or Spur is keeping you from showing your chosen foe what you’re made of. In this case, you may have to do a little strategizing -- something that shouldn’t be too difficult for a master tactician such as yourself.

ROLLIN' AROUND AT THE SPEED OF SOUND
Hmmm… Brave Veronica should outspeed this foe, so it’s time to do a little investigating.

Once you find the enemy that’s throwing a wrench into your plans, see if you can target them first.

GOT PLACES TO GO GOTTA FOLLOW MY RAINBOW
Ah, here’s the culprit. This Spur is preventing Veronica from following up. So let’s target them with Sigurd…

Since the foe is KO’d, you shouldn’t have any more issues. If you still aren’t doubling, start again from step one. Your foes can Drive and Spur stack just like you can, after all, even if they’re less purposeful about it.

BLAH BLAH BLAH FOLLOW ME, SET ME FREE
Now Veronica follows up, just like she should.

Body Blocking

If one of your squishier units is in danger, then don’t give up hope! It’s perfectly possible that you’ll be able to use one of your other units as a shield -- especially if they have high enough Speed to prevent being followed-up on.

is there anything this girl can't do?
Although it’s hardly an idea situation, Veronica’s reasonably high Speed allows her to absorb one hit from this axe cavalier to protect Reinhardt. Luckily, that’s all that’s necessary -- Sigurd’s Hone Cavalry-boosted Bonfire will KO them in one hit.

If At First You Don’t Succeed

Don’t be fooled by video walkthroughs of any Grand Hero Battle that you watch -- it’s very rare for anyone to beat high-difficulty content (or record a video of themselves doing so!) on their first try.  Additionally, the potential variance in unit builds that Skill Inheritance brought along with the random nature of summoning has resulted in pretty much every single summoner having different building blocks to work with. This, when combined with the high difficulty level of Infernal, may prove frustrating while someone is trying to find the right combination of units and moves. The key thing to keep in mind is that it may take some light Skill Inheritance and seal shuffling as well as multiple tries of the map to find a strategy that works for you. Every single turn you complete gets you one step closer to completing the puzzle. Finally, reading about or watching videos of successful strategies may also help you break through a particularly difficult turn that you can’t complete, or may give you ideas of a new unit to use.
