Spring Chrom’s recommended boon/bane sets can depend on which set he is running, though all builds enjoy high Attack. Defensive sets benefit the most from an Attack or Defense boon, and are the only sets to care about Speed. Resistance is not important for Chrom and it can be dropped if necessary.

Boons

  • +ATK: Attack is Spring Chrom’s best boon and gives him a substantial boost when running a Brave Axe set. With a Brave Axe, he can effectively double the Attack increase since he hits twice.

  • +DEF: Defensive sets can make great use of a Defense boon, but still prefer Attack. At only 28 base Defense, Chrom is a little squishier than most physical tanks and appreciates the defensive boost.

Neutral

  • HP: Offensive sets don’t care about dropping HP, but defensive ones would prefer to keep it intact as it affects his ability to tank all kinds of damage.

  • SPD: Speed is a mixed bag for Spring Chrom. His Brave Axe set functions just fine as a two-hit build. Spring Chrom’s Speed is most useful defensively, as 32 gives him a nice amount of Speed that makes it tough for most dragons and slower swords to double him. A Speed boon can allow him to attempt a Quad build, but this is a gimmicky set and not recommended.

Banes

  • RES: Chrom’s offensive sets can afford to drop Resistance as he won’t have the Speed to avoid doubles from mages. It does hurt him on defensive sets however, as it affects his ability to tank dragons. However, he has the tools to patch up his low Resistance, such as Close Def, A +Res weapon refine and Warding Breath.

  • Sacred Seal: Quickened Pulse / Attack +3 / Def Tactic

Spring Chrom is a deadly attacker thanks to his high base 35 Attack. A Brave Axe set sees him take the offensive, initiating combat to take down foes. This set should be played aggressively, and ideally with support from an ally with Reposition, Sing/Dance or Swap.

The basic aim of this build is to maximize Spring Chrom’s damage when initiating combat. Death Blow is the simplest solution and has great synergy with Brave weapons, as the bonus damage is applied twice. Life and Death is a decent alternative, but it makes him much less likely to survive counterattacks sent his way. The Quickened Pulse Seal combined with a two turn Special such as Moonbow or Glimmer let him activate his Special when he launches his first attack. Both Moonbow and Glimmer have around the same performance, so choice comes down to user preference.

Chill Def is of key importance, as it has the potential to grant an extraordinary damage increase. Chill Def is by far the best choice for his B slot, with Axebreaker as a distant second place. If Spring Chrom does not run Chill Def, he will be much more reliant on Attack-boosting buffs from allies.

As an Infantry unit, Spring Chrom is naturally at home on mixed teams and benefits hugely from Tactic skills. Res Tactic is ideal for him, as he is the least likely to want to benefit from Resistance buffs himself. Res Tactic is also a great choice if he is paired up with anti-mage units. Classic Spur skills are a good fit when he wants to support tanks and are a great all around choice.

If one is willing to give up the Quickened Pulse Seal, Spring Chrom can run two Tactic skills which let him provide a hefty amount of team support. Luna becomes a better Special in this instance, as it will trigger in the same time as a two-turn Special without Quickened Pulse. Attack +3 is good if you want Chrom to fight multiple foes in one round and don’t wish to rely on triggering a Special.

  • Special: Aether

  • Passive A: Steady Breath / Warding Breath

  • Passive B: Quick Riposte / Guard

  • Passive C: Res Tactic / Spur Def/Res

  • Sacred Seal: Close Def / Quick Riposte / Def Tactic

Spring Chrom can run a sturdy tank build for those who wish to see him take on a more defensive role on the field. Although arguably inferior to Brave Ike and Dorcas, he is a capable tank who can handle melee attackers. This set is designed to let Spring Chrom sustain over multiple rounds, firing off guaranteed Aethers which keep his HP high and help him puncture through high-defense enemies.

A Slaying Axe is vital, as this build relies much more on triggering Aether to deal damage and heal. In order to trigger Specials consistently, Spring Chrom should run a Breath skill, Quick Riposte and a Slaying Axe. This combo allows him to fire off Aether when he is attacked, due to the bonus cooldown acceleration from Steady Breath and a Slaying Axe. Quick Riposte is vital for this build, allowing Spring Chrom to retaliate and perform the two hits necessary to trigger Aether.

With only 28 base Defense, Spring Chrom needs to invest into his survivability. A Defense refine on his weapon goes a long way towards this end, granting him +4. Steady Breath grants another +4. Close Def is a great Seal to use on Spring Chrom, giving him a total +10 to his melee Defense. The Close Def Seal also gives him some Resistance, helping him to duel dragons. Spring Chrom can also run a +Res refine or Warding Breath to achieve this end, although these options will harm his Defense noticeably.

Guard is an option for Spring Chrom. This makes him hardier vs. units designed to trigger Specials such as Firesweep and Brave weapon users. However, he will need to run Quick Riposte in his Seal slot, effectively sacrificing Close Def for it. He can also run a Tactic skill in his Seal slot.

Once again, Chrom’s status as an Infantry unit makes him a natural choice for Tactic skills. Res Tactic is a great choice if he is paired up with anti-mage units. Classic Spur skills are a good fit when he wants to support tanks and are a great all around choice.

  • Special: Noontime / Sol

  • Passive A: Fury / Atk/Def +2

  • Passive B: Renewal

  • Passive C: Spur Def/Res / Spur Atk

  • Sacred Seal: Quick Riposte / Def Tactic

Those looking for a low-investment Spring Chrom will find value in this set. With his Carrot Axe’s healing, Spring Chrom can be a decent sustain tank, especially when given additional healing capabilities. This set is great for running long modes such as the Tempest Trials as it fully prioritises sustain over damage. This build only uses skills from units available at 4 stars or lower.

A Defense refine for his Carrot Axe gives him a much needed boost to his otherwise mediocre 28 Defense. As this set is defensive, all boosts to his Defense are very valuable for him. Fury gives him a good ball of stats: he in particular appreciates the Speed, taking him to 35, which is a good defensive Speed level. The damage from Fury is largely offset by his Carrot Axe, reducing its effective damage to just two per combat engagement.

Renewal gives Spring Chrom even more healing, and combined with Noontime he can sustain quite well when tanking foes. Sol is also a good option, but without any Special cooldown acceleration, he will find Sol much harder to trigger. Quick Riposte is also a must have: 35 Speed is high, but not high enough to guarantee Spring Chrom can double attack foes. With all of his healing, Spring Chrom should be able to keep above the required HP threshold, even accounting for Fury’s damage.

Spring Chrom works excellently with Reposition, but can also support his allies with Ardent Sacrifice and/or Reciprocal Aid. However, his healing is not strong enough to be used reliably. Spur Def/Res is a fantastic C slot skill for him, greatly aiding tanks that he is paired up with. But if one does not want to sacrifice a New Year’s Corrin(M), then Spur Atk works well and is easy to obtain.

Introduction

Spring Chrom is one of the original Spring Heroes introduced into Fire Emblem Heroes. Chrom is one of the protagonists of Fire Emblem: Awakening, and also appears in the game in his normal form. Spring Chrom differs from his regular version quite a bit, wielding axes instead of swords and having a different statline.

35 Attack is fantastic and, coupled with decent Speed and Defense, it lets Chrom run a myriad of different sets. He is more versatile than most axe users and can run defensive or offensive sets. Spring Chrom is somewhat of a jack of all trades thanks to his well-rounded statline. All of Chrom’s builds attempt to make use of his great base Attack stat.

Unfortunately, Spring Chrom is both difficult to get and expensive to build to his max potential (although, some good budget sets are available). Lack of access to skills such as Bold Fighter mean he can’t keep up with high-tier axe users, and 28 base Defense makes him softer than pure-defense units.

Strengths

Excellent base Attack

Spring Chrom’s base 35 Attack is the best thing about him as a unit. He has astounding damage output even when kitted out for defense. Brave Axes are a great weapon choice for him, allowing him to score more hits. Compared to units with lower raw Attack, Spring Chrom does not rely on triggering Specials to deal damage, making him good against Guard users.

Decent Speed and Defense

While Spring Chrom can rely on his awesome Attack stat to cut through foes, he also has decent Speed and Defense to back him up. 32 Speed is poor offensively but decent defensively, and will be enough to avoid doubles from many green units that sit between 27 and 32 Speed. Spring Chrom does not rely on his Speed, but does on his Defense. Base 28 is low, but workable with boosts available through weapon refines, Steady Breath, Close Defense and a boon. With these boosts, Spring Chrom can run Ignis or Bonfire as viable Special options.

Weaknesses

Low Resistance

Spring Chrom has poor Resistance, leaving him prone to being slain by magical attackers. He is obliterated by mages, either as OHKOs or through double attacks. He also takes heavy damage from dragons, and relies on his Speed to avoid being doubled by them. This can be a difficult prospect if they have Speed-boosting elements of their build such as Fury.

Struggles to achieve a niche

Spring Chrom as an infantry axe user has little niche compared to his peers. He lacks a unique weapon, and his statline does not excel in anything beyond his Attack. He is outclassed by units such as Brave Ike and Dorcas defensively, and can’t keep up with units like Raven and Cherche on the offense. This combined with the fact he is not easily obtainable make him an unattractive investment for many players.
