IV Sets

Key stats worth increasing through nature if possible.
Complementary stats that matter, but not to the point of picking them over key stats for nature increase.
Relatively worthless stat that can safely be decreased through nature.
HPATKSPDDEFRES

Summer Leo’s staline is quite similar to other magical soak units such as Sanaki and Julia, so it logically follows that his preferred IVs would be similar to theirs.

Boons

  • +ATK: Adds to Summer Leo’s potential damage output. Given his relatively low base Attack, bolstering it is a good idea.
  • +SPD: Raises Summer Leo’s defensive Speed tier to a respectable 30 (33 with Fury), preventing follow-ups from units such as +Spd Fury Nowi.

Neutral

  • RES: While Summer Leo can run a Resistance boon or bane, it’s best kept at neutral to invest in other offensive stats or preserve his natural magical bulk.

Banes

  • -HP: While reducing Summer Leo’s magical bulk isn’t ideal, it’s preferable to reducing his offensive stats or excellent Resistance.
  • -DEF: Summer Leo’s Defense is his obvious dump stat and thus can be safely lessened without compromising his effectiveness.

This set aims to play to Summer Leo’s strengths, those being his ability to check fully buffed common green Blade tome users and tank most other tome units when he’s adjacent to his allies. In the former case, he is able to comfortably KO them in the exchange, while in the latter he can deal some impressive damage once Iceberg is charged. This set is also notable for being able to withstand and KO +ATK Death Blow Quickened Pulse Moonbow Reinhardt, which is something a vast majority of red units cannot do in their wildest dreams.

For IV choice, +ATK allows Summer Leo to deal more damage and net a few key KOs in one round of combat and avoid taking more damage than he has to, while +SPD keeps him from being doubled by and taking unnecessary damage from units like +SPD Fury Julia. -DEF avoids compromising his magical bulk, although -HP is a perfectly serviceable option.

Rauðrowl works fantastically on Summer Leo, by adding a bonus to his Attack, Speed, Defense, and Resistance equal to the number of allies adjacent to him. This is especially true when it’s used in conjunction with Atk/Res Bond, which gives him +5 Attack and Resistance when adjacent to an ally. Note that all the calculations mentioned in the introduction of this build were done assuming Summer Leo only has two adjacent allies -- although his survivability is still quite good with only one. He will, however, need to inherit Fire and Elfire before he can inherit Rauðrowl -- these skills can be found on a 4 star Lilina. Summer Leo’s native Tomato Tome can also be used, although it is significantly less effective.

Reposition allows Summer Leo to stay glued to one of his teammates while preparing his positioning for Enemy Phase, while Swap allows for much the same. This slot is quite variable, however, and can be filled with whatever Assist suits a team best.

Iceberg is preferable as in most cases, Summer Leo will tank a green mage, KO them, and have Iceberg charged and ready to deal heavy damage to -- if not outright KO -- another foe. Glacies is another potential option that is a better choice if Summer Leo is baiting red magic users (as it will be fully charged if he is doubled, allowing him to deal devastating damage), although its higher cooldown makes it less appealing.

Quick Riposte makes up for Summer Leo’s middling Speed, allowing him to perform consistent doubles when he’s baiting, which he is enabled to do by the Distant Def seal. This isn’t necessary in the case of most green tome units, but can help Summer Leo in matchups with blue (yes, really) and red magic users.

Finally, Summer Leo’s ideal C skill is Atk Ploy or Spd Ploy, as his high Resistance allows him to hit most units with a debuff that directly adds to his and his allies’ survivability. Since he will generally be staying adjacent to his allies, however, Drive or Spur skills of one’s choice are also great options, allowing Summer Leo to support his teammates offensively or defensively.

Show Explanation/Analysis
  • Preferred IV: +ATK / -DEF or -HP
  • Weapon: Rauðblade+
  • Assist: Pivot / Swap / Flexible
  • Special: Iceberg / Glacies
  • Passive A: Death Blow / Fury
  • Passive B: Quick Riposte / R Tomebreaker
  • Passive C: Res Ploy / Atk Ploy
  • Sacred Seal: Attack +3

Although not as effective as Lilina due to her monstrous Attack stat, Summer Leo is still an adequate Blade user given enough investment. Notably, with buffs to Attack and two other stats he is able to OHKO every green non-buffed dragon, which is an important benchmark given their newfound proliferance.

Every aspect of this build serves the function of maximizing Summer Leo’s Attack stat given his middling Speed. A -DEF IV allows Summer Leo to still bait most green and red magic users assuming they’re not heavily buffed, while +ATK (along with the Attack +3 seal) bumps his Attack stat up to a respectable 51.

For Assists, options are once again variable depending on a team's composition. Iceberg’s relatively low cooldown makes it a good choice for Summer Leo to bait a green mage and then destroy another foe, and also comes packaged in his base kit. Glacies, alternatively, can be charged fully if he is doubled by a red mage and packs a bigger punch. Death Blow allows Summer Leo to hit harder on Player Phase, while Fury adds to his general tankiness and is a good budget alternative. Using Fury, however, does somewhat affect Summer Leo’s ability to OHKO green dragons without being fully buffed.

Quick Riposte 3 is Blade Summer Leo’s ideal B skill as he is generally able to overpower most common sword units when he’s properly buffed (as described by the scenario in the introduction), making Swordbreaker redundant. He’s much better off retaining his ability to bait green and red tome users, though do note he will not be able to tank blue tome users with this set. Alternatively, if a team (though this is improbable) encounters many red tome users, R Tomebreaker serves the purpose of being a less flexible but more dedicated check.

Res Ploy allows Summer Leo the added bonus of requiring less buffs the adequately KO a foe, while Atk Ploy is a budget option that allows him to support his team by debuffing enemies away from danger.

  • Sacred Seal: Distant Def / Quick Riposte

For everyone who pulled a Summer Leo on a Legendary Hero banner and is looking to build him for use in Arena Assault or similar modes with the least amount of investment possible, this build is for you.

The goal of this build is simple -- maximize Summer Leo’s Resistance, use him to bait a magic user (including unbuffed Reinhardt), charge his Special, and then heavily damage or outright KO another foe.

+Res refinement on the Tomato Tome grants Summer Leo a little extra magical bulk and allows him to survive some additional engagements regardless of the IV set he runs. Assists, once again, can easily vary based on team composition. Iceberg is excellent on Summer Leo given his sky-high Resistance, though you can substitute it for Glacies if you're finding it's being wasted in combat with a magic-wielding foe that Summer Leo could defeat without it. Fury adds to his damage output once his Special is a charged and allows him to activate Atk Ploy against a vast majority of his enemies.

Quick Riposte guarantees Summer Leo will KO most magical enemies while baiting despite his low Speed, although Renewal is another potential budget option, offering Summer Leo increased sustain. If Renewal is used, Quick Riposte should be chosen in the seal slot to allow for consistent follow-ups while baiting. Atk Ploy is excellent for allowing Summer Leo to tank more easily, while Distant Def further adds to his ability to bait magical foes by increasing his Resistance.

Introduction

Sporting an outfit that’s tailor-made for fun in the sun, Summer Leo enters the fray as a decidedly average unit. Sporting unimpressive 32/27 base Attack/Speed, his main draw is his sky-high Resistance, which allows him to even bait blue tome units given the proper setup. It’s quite the impressive feat for a red such as himself!

Unfortunately, in order to really shine, Summer Leo’s going to require a significant amount of difficult to obtain skills , but he’s also a serviceable mage counter with a few basic additions to his vanilla kit. Compared to units like Odin, Summer Leo is far from being useless and unsalvageable, and though there are other unique units that offer more compelling benefits that do his job, it is not a job he does badly.

Strengths

High Base Resistance

Summer Leo’s base Resistance is so high that he’s even able to check some blue tome units, which is pretty incredible given their strength.

His Resistance also synergizes well with Specials like Iceberg and Glacies, allowing him to deal significant damage once they’re charged.

Average Speed

Summer Leo’s Speed reaches 30 with a Boon, which is similar to Julia, Lilina, and Sanaki.

This, especially when combined with Fury, prevents units with mid-tier Speed from performing follow-ups on him.

Weaknesses

Awful Defense

Unfortunately, Summer Leo’s Defense makes him a weak candidate for a standard Triangle Adept / Raven Tome set.

It also prevents him from avoiding KOs from most physical damage dealers.

Offensively Uncompelling

Although Summer Leo’s offensive spread isn’t awful, it’s far from great, especially when compared to other red tome users like Sanaki, Lilina, and Tharja.

Requires Exclusive Tome and Skills to be Optimal

As of the time of writing, Rauðrowl and Atk/Res Bond’s limited availability makes them difficult to obtain, let alone justify inheriting them away to Summer Leo.
