GameClub Launches Today for iOS, Bringing Old Mobile Games to New Devices

October 24, 2019 marks the release of GameClub for iOS, a new mobile game subscription service hot off the heels of Apple Arcade. GameClub's modus operandi is quite different from the Apple service, which aims to provide new and exclusive mobile games for multiple types of devices.

The games that players will find in the GameClub's monthly service catalog are extensive and somewhat familiar. That's because part of the draw of GameClub is the company is putting in dev time in order to make older games that are stuck on the iPhones of yesteryear work for the newest suite of iOS devices. Games showcased include Glorkian Warrior and Super Crate Box. These games are available offline and new games are added to the service on a weekly basis. There are over 50 games for players to check out right now, and they can try the service for free for one month. After that, it's $4.99 to continue.

Personally, this new service is aimed at a market that I'm not sure is big enough to support it. GameClub's focus is on premium mobile games that may or may not require serious development in order to work on iOS devices in the current generation. Reddit is pretty happy about this new service, if you take a look at r/iosgaming. But are there enough players to make GameClub's business model viable? Time will tell.
