Equipment

Special Equipment
Type 79 S&B762

Overview

Type 79 is a craftable five-star Chinese SMG that relies on crowd control to tank efficiently. Her combination of high HP and strong tile buffs give her an edge over UMP9, but being the best Stun Grenade SMG unfortunately does not mean much. Stun Grenades are most of the time vastly inferior to Smoke Grenades due to their relative high Initial Cooldown and inability to affect bosses — and because of this high Initial Cooldown, Type 79’s Stun Grenade often fails to make an impact.

This factor aside, Type 79 is overall an above average choice if a main tank SMG is needed, but her performance as crowd control tank still pales in comparison to Smoke Grenade SMGs like UMP45. Type 79’s ability as an AR buffer is most of the time subpar compared to units that can properly buff all 3 ARs in the backline, but in Echelon compositions that make use of 2 ARs and a backline buffer HG, she is rivaled by few.

Strengths

Strong Stats

Type 79’s great HP pool of 970 and her 70 Evasion makes her statline one of the best distributed stat bases for SMGs.

Potent Tile Buffs

Type 79’s 20% Damage tile buff is one of the best in her class.

Strong Crowd Control

Type 79’s Stun Grenade Skill will paralyze enemies within a radius of 2.5 units for 4.5 seconds, disrupting the enemy’s ability to deal damage quite handily.

Weaknesses

Stun Grenade does not affect Bosses

Stun Grenades do not affect Bosses — unlike Smoke Grenades. This decreases this Skill’s overall effectiveness and viability significantly.

Relatively Long Cooldown

Stun Grenades have a fixed initial Cooldown of 5 seconds, unlike the fast activating Smoke Grenades that possess an initial Cooldown of 1 second. This further decreases their effectiveness and viability in comparison.

Suboptimal Tile Coverage

Type 79 fails to buff the AR directly behind her, which might make them feel neglected and sad.

Full Analysis

Type 79 possesses a very strong stat base with very well distributed HP and Evasion that serve to make her resilient to chip damage. Her great tile buff’s only fault is the inability to buff a potential third AR behind her and while this is normally a big issue, it does not mean Type 79 will not see use even when she’s seemingly outclassed by UMP45 and RO635. Type 79 often finds herself used in event ranking maps, where AR Echelon compositions see themselves stretched thin due to the sheer amount of Echelons needed and the lack of M4A1-esque dolls. As Type 79’s scarce in number but potent in effect tile buffs see their weakness completely negated in Echelons that employ 2 ARs and a backline HG buffer like Grizzly, M1895 or SAA, her utility is significantly boosted in these situations.

Type 79’s Stun Grenade Skill is what allows her to enact crowd control, as it completely stuns enemies within a 2.5 unit radius for a 4.5 second duration. She does, however, suffer from a mismatch in this regard. As her Skill has an Initial Cooldown of 5 seconds — which is only added to by the the aiming and travel time of her grenade — it sometimes is activated right as the battle is ending, nullifying its impact. Though it remains a very strong tool against tightly packed enemies and enemy Echelons with a well guarded frontline, Stun Grenades also do not work on Bosses unlike Smoke Grenades, so Type 79 cannot take advantage of it as much as she would like to. It should be noted, however, that Stun Grenades do work on mini-bosses (secondary bosses within an Echelon that are not displayed on the map) and this might prove useful at some point.

Type 79 is overall a solid choice as a main tank SMG, and though she is outclassed by the likes of RO635 and UMP45, she offers very solid tile buffs for 2AR Echelons, and her strong stat base coupled with the Stun Grenade makes for a resilient SMG against mobs. Her role in event ranking maps also can’t be understated, making her a SMG worth secondary investment.

Team Options

ARs with Damage self-buffs

One of the best ways to take advantage from the fast firing nature of ARs is Damage buffs, and Type 79 helps Damage self-buff ARs like G41, Type95, and OTs-14 to reach absurd damage-dealing levels with her tile buffs.

ARs with long Initial Skill Cooldown

Type 79 can give much needed breathing room to high Cooldown ARs like HK416, Sopmod, FAL and G11. In addition, Type 79 helps increase G11’s low Damage stat.

Backline HG buffers in 2 AR teams

As mentioned in the full analysis, Type 79 shines when she is only required to buff 2 ARs, and in these teams a very strong Damage buffing HG must be employed to truly succeed. Some of the best candidates are Grizzly, SAA, and M1895.

History/Trivia

The Type 79 submachine gun was designed in the 1970s and entered mass production in 1983. Although the Type 79 is still in use by Chinese military and police forces, its production ceased in 1992.
