T-Doll Analysis

Special Equipment
G3 Improved Barrel Group

Overview

One of the first AR’s Commanders get access to, G3 is likely to be a Commander’s first Grenadier and offers a somewhat poor introduction to the archetype. While her Damage is through the roof, the remainder of her stats is average at best, with her RoF being amongst the worst of any AR. G3’s problems continue with her Tiles, which only buff the Doll directly above her, and are therefore functionally useless, as SMGs should not be in the backlines, and G3 should not be on the frontline.

As a Grenadier, G3 shines against large groups of enemies, providing an unavoidable (provided targeting cooperates) burst of damage. While her low rarity and multiplier do restrict her slightly, her high base Damage helps slightly shore up this weakness. However, with M4 SOPMOD II coming for in 2-6 with free Dummy Links and partly leveled, G3 has only a brief window where she can provide value to even new Commanders, before being eclipsed by SOPMOD, who does everything G3 can do, but better. This is without getting into the shortfalls of the Grenadier class in general.

At least she’s cute, right?

G3 Improved Barrel Group

Overview

G3’s Neural Upgrade is something of a mixed bag. While it does provide boosts to all of her stats, including a slight boost to Rate of Fire, a massive boost of Accuracy, and, of course, even more Damage, G3 wanted more Rate of Fire and less Accuracy, and this already starts her off on an awkward foot. Her Tile Buffs get a nice boost, now actually applying to at least one Doll in the front row, and are useful for Direct Fire SMGs in situations where those are used.

G3’s Grenade gets the boost to match her improved rarity, letting her deal even more Damage. While not a flashy boost, it is nonetheless a strong one. Her Second Skill takes the route of other grenadiers and doubles down on her grenade. Freezing Point of Courage is a strange hybrid of a Skill, that either Stuns everything that will be hit by the grenade over 50% health or increases the Damage if enemies are below 50%. If this seems counter-intuitive, that is because it is. G3 Mod would prefer to have the boosted Damage on enemies over 50% HP, but MICA did not design to provide her with such so we need to work with what we have. The Stun component is a bit quirky, applying at the start of the firing animation, instead of the impact. This rarely has any major effect but does keep enemies locked in place for the Grenade to hit. Worse, like a stun, this only affects some enemies (Hydras, Uhlans, Doppelsoldners, Bosses and more are unaffected), and it comes much later than Stun Grenade Skills at 8 seconds, and lasts for less than half as long, at 1.6 seconds.

The extra Damage is a strong buff, pushing G3’s multiplier up to the same level as 416’s Neural Upgrade, but the limitation of hitting enemies at less than 50% HP effectively undercuts its value. Grenadiers are traditionally used to clear out large groups of enemies from full HP, where this Damage boost doesn’t apply.

In the end, G3 Mod suffers not from her own upgrade, but from the presence of stronger Neural Upgrades such as 416, and limited use for her niche. While a welcome upgrade for a subpar Doll, she remains unable to stand out from her peers, and you do get less for your Cores and Fragments, making her a low priority investment for all but the most dedicated of HK fans.

She’s still cute though.

Strengths

Big Damage

G3’s 55 Damage is one of the highest among Grenadiers, helping her claw back some damage from her painful multiplier.

Readily Available

G3 drops like candy from maps and AR construction, making her easy to acquire and cheap to raise.

Weaknesses

Low Rate of Fire

While all of G3’s non-damage stats are middling, her Rate of Fire Stands out as especially bad and is one of the worst in the entire AR class at 61. Her direction competition, SOPMOD and 416 clocks in at 78 and 76 RoF respectively

She is not all you need

Other Grenadiers do G3’s job better than her, with more well-rounded stats, strong multipliers, and actually usable Tile Buffs. Most notable, M4 SOPMODII comes pre-leveled to 30 with 3 links from 3-3 and has the unique ability to equip EOT and VFL scopes at the same time, or VFL and PEQ scopes at night.

Strengths

Even Bigger Boom

G3’s Mod further boosts her best trait, namely her high base Damage, boosting her grenades multiplier, as well as giving her more base Damage, and her Speq giving further Damage boosts.

Thighs upgrade

Her Mod III art alone makes Mod III worth it.

Weaknesses

Still Not All You Need

Everything G3 Mod can do, her German successor can do better. 416’s Neural Upgrade does more Damage, has more rounded stats, a pair of powerful Special Equips, a stronger second Skill, and a shorter ICD. She is also outclassed by SOPMOD’s Neural upgrade.

Grenadier

Grenadiers as an archetype have an extremely limited niche and that niche has limited uses, leaving G3 overshadowed by stronger Grenadiers.

Team Options

  • Damage Buffing SMGs: Raising G3’s Damage improves both her Grenade Damage and regular DPS. Standard picks such as UMP 45 or Type 79 work well, while PPS-43 and Ingram are solid budget options.

  • Damage Buffing HGs: G3 pairs with damage boosting HGs for the same reasons as SMGs. SAA and Grizzly are both good choices if they are available, otherwise budget options include M1895, MP-446, and Makarov.

  • Sustained DPS ARs: Due to her low Rate of Fire, G3’s sustained DPS is limited, and she appreciates teammates with self buffs in either Damage or ROF. ST AR-15 and TAR-21 are solid choices if available. For newer commanders and budget teams, FNC, OTs-12, and F2000 fill this role well.

History/Trivia

This tale starts at the end of WW2, with the MKb Gerät 06, a gas-operated, roller-locked prototype rifle. During firing trials, it was found that due to a quirk of the roller locking, the gas system could be omitted entirely, if close attention was paid to the mechanical ratios of the locking system.

This developed into the Gerät 06H, the H being halbverriegelt, or half-locked. After significant effort involving engineers, mathematicians, and other fields of expertise were necessary to finely tune this system to remove the earlier bolt-bounce quirk, but without the need of a gas system. This was all going on in 1943, and it was subsequently patented by two of Mauser's engineers who were leading the project.

Flash forward to 1944 and 1945, Germany is taking a beating. The StG44 is somewhat expensive to build (although very capable), and the simplicity of the roller-delayed blowback mechanism would mean that the StG45(M) - that M stands for Mauser as it was their prototype - to be significantly cheaper to produce, around 35% lower cost compared to the StG44. (More details on StG44 page trivia)

Only 30 rifles were completed before the war ended and funny mustache man did the world a favor by removing himself from existence.

How this relates to G3? Well, those Mauser engineers didn't disappear. First, they went to work in France at CEAM (Centre d'Études et d'Armement de Mulhouse) and made the Modèle 1950, which looks a lot like the soon-to-come HK33. However, France, despite wanting to adopt this rifle, lacked the funding to do so.

Those Mauser engineers packed their bags and went to make more guns at Spain's CETME, where they were VERY successful, starting CETME's line of automatic rifles: A, B, C, E, and R; the A model was only a prototype but achieved things thought nearly impossible at the time by achieving accurate fire at 1000m with a lightweight, automatic weapon; the remaining models are all production ones, with the C being the most common as it was the de-facto standard rifle.

Now for a small detour about H&K. At the end of the war, the Mauser factory was dismantled by the French. Three men, Heckler, Koch, and Seidel, salvaged what they could and set up a machine tool factory in the now vacant space that became Engineering Office Heckler&Co in 1948. By 1949, the name was changed to Heckler & Koch GmbH, and they made machine tools, bicycles, sewing machines, and a miscellanea of precision parts.

History gets a bit muddy around here because of conflicting sources but the part where Germany gets involved is during the prototype stage, where the west german border patrol sought a rifle to equip its newly formed defense forces. H&K saw an opportunity in the request for a new service rifle, and probably reaching old contacts, they got to know that their old friends from Mauser were making one cool rifle all the way out in Spain.

Not wanting a non-NATO cartridge, they requested a redesign for the use of 7.62x51mm NATO, and worked together with CETME to make the Model B. This rifle was proposed to the border defense forces, which didn't like it and decided to get the G1 instead (german designation for the FAL, basically means Rifle 1). However, the German Army showed interest and purchased a small number of Model B rifles for testing.

Meanwhile, the border defense forces were all happy about their newly acquired FALs and requested FN to hand over the data package so they could make it. Understandably, the Belgians weren't very pleased with getting their factories destroyed during the war, so they denied this. Either they bought the G1 rifles at a significant expense, or they got nothing.

Now, the trials start. The now named G3 competed successfully against the Swiss SIG 510 (G2) and the American AR10 (G4) to replace the G1. Extended troop trials soon followed, and with small changes to the G3 made by H&K, it was officially adopted in 1959.

After small politics with NWM (the firm that owned the production and sales rights to the CETME rifles outside of Spain), production rights were acquired and a contract in which NWM provided the Luftwaffe with 20mm ammunition was settled.

G3 production got assigned to Rheinmetall and our old friend H&K; the latter already having ties with CETME they continuously improved the rifle, and in 1969, Rheinmetall sacrificed their production rights of the rifle to H&K, as long as H&K didn't bid to also produce the MG3 machine gun for the German armed forces.

In 1977, the West German govt gave H&K the exclusive G3 production and sales rights.

This rifle, against many odds, not only beat the FAL and the later very successful design from Eugene Stoner in trials but also was produced in larger numbers than both... Combined. (granted, the AR-10 never saw much use, but it's still impressive) The SIG510 wasn't as important in the grand scheme of things as any of these 3 rifles, but still a good contender.

Adopted by over 40 countries, produced domestically by 18 of them, and still in active service today with a few of them, with many more as reserves or as training rifles.

The G3 spawned multiple derivatives, such as the MP5, HK21, HK33, PSG-1 (and its sister the MSG-90). Military, police, and civilian (sporting, hunting, and self-defense), the G3 and its derivatives could do it all, with the MP5 being the golden standard for SMGs to this very day, and the PSG-1 as a more reliable competitor to the WA2000 (both went nowhere, but the PSG-1 is significantly more attainable than the WA2000).

Much like the Centurion tank, it got upgraded extensively. It has been fired in anger many times like not many firearms ever have, through small and large conflicts. It outlived many others, and to a certain degree, still does. Over 60 years of service is nothing to scoff at, and its heavy, rugged, violent, long-ranged nature is well suited to the arctic, where it sees most of its modern use.
