Overview

Type 97S is everything a shotgun shouldn’t be, which makes it especially sad that she is the freebie SG: she is a DPS SG, her ICD is 8 seconds, which means she only uses her Skill after reloading, and her base Armor is downright awful. Her only saving grace is her somewhat high HP pool.

Moreover, SPAS-12 and M500 are two SGs acquirable through Career Rewards, and thus do not require crafting the expensive SG recipe, especially when new Commanders lack access to the good logistics of chapters 10 onwards. As SPAS can service Commanders well until they acquire one of the premier 5-star SGs, like LTLX or S.A.T.8, while M500 has a Neural Upgrade that earned her a place in the end game content, there simply is no reason for Commanders to even field Type 97S, let alone craft SG recipes to obtain her.

Overview

Back, hotter, and more armoured, 97S Mod fixes several issues. She now sports a decent 22 base Armor, a beefier HP pool (though she still loses to SPAS-12), a beautiful Mod III art, and… that’s it.

Her Skill 2 slows down enemies for ONE MISERABLE SECOND (and yes, that doesn’t scale with levelling it, only the movement decrease does), which means that her Skill 2 is essentially useless. Realistically, the only reason to go for her Mod III is for her art alone, as her SPEQ is just an Armor Plate that slightly buffs Evasion instead of reducing it.

When we thought we’d never see a Bren Mod or an IDW Mod again, 97S Mod made a close attempt at being ranked among those two. Her only salvation is that her Skill 2 isn’t anti synergetic with her kit at least.

Strengths

High HP pool

At 1320 total HP pool 97S sits comfortably in the upper spectrum of SG HP pools. Unfortunately for her, M500 also has 1320 HP, while SPAS has a beefy 1375 HP, which means her only redeeming quality doesn’t even beat her early competition.

Good tiles

12% Damage tiles covering the whole backline are always welcomed by MGs.

Weaknesses

Bad base Armor

At 20 Armor, 97S lags behind both SPAS and M500, both of which have 21 base Armor. She also lags behind several other 3 star SGs, like HSm10, M1897 “Janny SG” and TS12.

Offensive SG

Offensive SGs are, by nature, incredibly niche, and often not preferable over defensive SGs. As 97S’ Skill comes up at the 8 seconds mark, Commanders either has to wait for her to reload, or kite her so she won’t be reloading when she activates it. On top of that, her DPS contribution is negligible next to the contribution of the MG teammates.

Expensive for newbies

Requiring 10 Heavy T-Doll production crafts means that she is quite expensive for new Commanders who are solely in need of an SG. When compared to M500 and SPAS-12, both of which are handed out for free, 97S' cost simply isn't justified.

Strengths

Decent Armor

22 Armor is on the upper end of SG Armor, with S.A.T.8 and M590 also having the same armor stat.

Beefier HP pool

At 1355 HP, 97S Mod is now beefier than most of her SG counterparts. Too bad she still loses to SPAS-12

Beautiful Mod III art

97S is one of the cases the Mod art is a huge upgrade over the default art (G3 being also a prime example). If Commanders need only one reason to Mod III her, do it for the art.

Actually no, she’s an expensive Mod, just save the png on your phone as background.

Weaknesses

Still a DPS SG

Her Skill 2 does nothing to change the fact that, in the end, she still is an average DPS SG. Her Skill 1 upgrade added a small Accuracy bonus which, while it is welcome, won’t change the ICD or the bad nature of her Skill.

Borderline useless Skill 2

Sometimes we at GamePress wonders about whatever happens on MICA’s character design table. This is one of these times. Her Skill 2 lasts for ONE SECOND.

REPEAT WITH ME: ONE SECOND.

Whoever thought that a movement slowdown Skill should last one miserable second, well... I leave up to you to figure it out.

97S manages to be the closest thing to a Mod without a Skill 2. If only the duration of the slowdown scaled with her Level.

Team Options

Due to her low base Armor, it’s highly recommended to field her with Armor tile MGs, like Kord, M1895 CB, or BAR. It’s not encouraged to field FP HGs in order to increase the damage output of 97S.

Team Options

The days of 97S being thirsty for Armor is over. At 22 Armor, she no longer desperately needs Armor tile MGs. Nevertheless, those are still welcome, as you will not dare to feed Damage tiles to make the most out of 97S’ DPS kit.

Because she has an offensive kit, defensive HGs like P22, HS2000, who can provide shields, are very much welcome.

The Type 97-1 is a pump-action Shotgun developed in the late 1990s by Norinco primarily designed for domestic use and exportation. It was closely modeled after the Remington M870 and has many interchangeable parts that can be used with it as a result.
