Equipment

Overview

P90 is one of the most sought-after SMGs in older GFL servers, with a well-balanced stat line that is the envy of every other main tank SMG, excellent tile buff second only to the likes of UMP45, and a relatively complex but powerful unique skill that confers almost unparalleled survivability in fights where its longer 6s initial cooldown isn’t a big issue.

Squirrel not only taunts enemies into wasting a decent number of shots on temporary decoys, but also provides a scaling evasion boost that almost reaches Suomi’s insane 150% multiplier. Hard-hitting shots from bosses like Sangvis Ferri Ringleaders or elites like Manticores can be totally negated when P90's skill is used properly, further impressing her status as an excellent pick for those situations. With her incredible kit, charming character design, and flashy win animation, it’s no wonder that P90 enjoys her status as one of the most desired T-Dolls in Girls’ Frontline.

While the only thing standing between the Commander’s armory and this new 5-star SMG is one pesky 02:29:00 craft timer, P90’s perhaps most infamous aspect is her extreme rarity compared to the typical 5* unit, inspiring webcomics to label her as non-existent after many CN players failed to pull her from the initial rate-up. Commanders interested in crafting for P90, which probably covers everyone reading this article, are therefore advised to mentally prepare for a rocky road ahead in the factory.

Strengths

Excellent Base Stats

  • P90 has a very high Evasion of 83 and a respectable HP value of 190 per dummy link, a rare combination that grants her far above average pre-skill survivability.

Powerful Unique Skill

  • P90 receives a brief Evasion boost when she takes noticeable damage, giving her more tankiness when she needs it.

  • The holograms deployed by the active portion of her skill can tank a fixed number of hits, making P90 an excellent tank against bosses who tend to hit hard with their attacks.

  • With an initial cooldown of 6 seconds, Squirrel is much more likely to activate in time compared to Force Shield.

(See the Full Analysis for a detailed explanation of P90’s unique skill.)

Good Tile Buff and Coverage

  • P90’s tile buff provides ARs with an appreciable boost of 12% Damage and 30% Accuracy.

  • As all three tiles in the back column are covered from position 5, P90 has perfect tile coverage for her role as a main tank.

Weaknesses

Long Initial Cooldown

  • With an ICD of 6 seconds, P90's skill will have zero effect on her survivability until then, unless her passive activates due to taking damage. As the entire goal of tanking is to lose as little health as possible, this is not ideal for shorter fights - low ICD Main Tank SMGs like C-MS or UMP45 whose skills take effect much earlier tend to be better in those situations.

Skill Effectiveness Decreases at Low Health

  • The active portion of Squirrel deploys holograms based on the number of dummy links remaining, meaning that when P90 takes damage, the number of holograms deployed by her skill will be reduced proportionally to the amount of HP remaining, and therefore absorb fewer hits before they expire.

Holograms Less Effective Against Large Swarms

  • As the holograms deployed by P90's Skill have fixed stats of 0 Evasion, 3 HP, and 999 Armor, they'll absorb only 15 hits when unshielded, regardless of whether they are weak mook shots or powerful Sangvis Ringleader attacks. If many enemies remain on the field when Squirrel activates, the holograms can be taken down very quickly, leaving P90 with only the Evasion boosting component of her Skill.

Full Analysis

P90 is blessed with both high base Evasion and high HP - critical stats for an SMG Main Tank. Not only is P90’s Evasion stat of 83 far above average, but her impressive health buffer of 190 HP per dummy link provides her much more base durability than that of most SMGs with comparably high Evasion.

Her tile buff covers ARs on all three tiles in the back column when she is placed in the standard main tank position, providing a respectable boost of 12% Damage and 30% Accuracy. While she does not offer a Crit Rate buff like UMP45, their tile buff performance is similar in practice as the most challenging content tends to be at night where Crit Rate boosts are less effective and Accuracy boosts become more noticeable against unarmored foes.

P90’s unique skill, Squirrel, is her most interesting and complex gameplay element. The extremely long and potentially confusing skill description can be rephrased as follows:

  • If P90 takes more than 5% of her start-of-battle health in damage, she receives a short evasion boost, ramping up from 20% to ~73% over its 3 second duration.

  • By activating her skill, P90 deploys hologram copies of herself that last for 3 seconds and serve as damage shields, each capable of absorbing 3 hits. All enemies, including enemies not currently targeting P90, will re-target to the holograms. An evasion boost also activates and ramps up from 20% to ~148% over the next 5 seconds, granting P90 extra survivability even after the holograms expire.

  • Whenever either of the above situations occur, P90’s next four shots are guaranteed to hit the enemy and critically strike.

    • This portion of the skill typically adds negligible damage and should be treated as a bonus, rather than a critical feature to build around.

p90 skill demonstration

While the holograms have a relatively long initial cooldown of 6 seconds, their taunting effect can be put to good use and potentially negate all damage taken for 3 seconds, serving a similar role as Force Shield but on a unit with much better base stats and auxiliary evasion boosts that enhance her survivability outside of the active skill duration.

Notably, if an HP shield such as Sei’s White Knight's Shield is applied to the holograms,  they will still take only 1 damage per enemy attack due to their innate 999 armor. However, as holograms only have a duration of 3 seconds, the usefulness of this interaction is limited to enhancing the holograms’ durability when P90 is at low health, or for tanking larger swarms of enemies (as enemy dummy links will each chip away 1 hit).

When applying HP shields to P90, manual skill activation may be necessary for the shield-applying HG, as Auto Skill will typically result in simultaneous activation of P90’s skill and the shield, causing holograms to not receive the HP shield as they did not exist at the moment of shield activation.

While holograms will typically absorb at least 15 hits before expiring, EN will eventually face off against enemies that regularly deal Area of Effect damage or ignore Armor, in both cases dealing significantly more damage per hit to P90’s holograms. As a result, the effectiveness of P90’s skill is correspondingly diminished against such enemies.

In extremely short battles where most enemies are wiped out before 6 seconds, P90 may not be as effective as SMGs with low initial cooldown skills like RO635 or Smoke Grenade users. Nevertheless, due to the increasing presence of highly challenging fights that P90’s unique skill excels in, she is bound to become a core echelon member for commanders undaunted by her incredible rarity.

Team Options

Offtank SMG

Since P90 is a main tank, pairing her with an offensive SMG to serve as an offtank is highly recommended. The standard picks of an AoE grenadier like Vector, Skorpion, PPS-43 and other similar SMG T-Dolls will work just fine.

Self-Buff ARs

Self-Buff ARs are the standard backbone of most ARSMG teams, and as P90 does not offer a Rate of Fire buff, ARs who boost their own Rate of Fire near cap like Type 97 can be freely used here without any concerns of going over 116 RoF from tiles. Of course, Damage-buffing ARs pair well with P90 just as they would any other SMG tank, and ARs with powerful skills on a low initial cooldown like Type95, K2, and Zas can be particularly helpful for reducing damage taken by P90 prior to her skill activation.

Anti-Personnel Grenade ARs

ARs with an Anti-Personnel Grenade typically suffer from their long initial cooldown of 8 seconds, during which they deal subpar damage and often cause the frontline SMG to take substantial damage.

P90, however, tends to take far less damage than other SMGs between 6s and 9s thanks to the holograms from her unique skill. Against enemies where Anti-Personnel Grenades and their high burst AoE damage are needed, P90 is among the best main tank options that a commander can bring to protect powerful long-ICD grenadiers like 416 and M4 SOPMOD II.

HGs

Even though P90’s tile buff does cover position 4, placing a handgun there can still be the optimal choice in situations that call for it. HGs such as Grizzly, Sei, and K5 can simultaneously boost the backline’s DPS while enhancing the main tank’s evasion, and are therefore always useful from tile 4, teams with P90 being no exception.

M1911’s Smoke Grenade may also cover for P90’s long initial cooldown, though the associated loss in DPS may not always be worth it. Commanders are encouraged to test various team combinations and base their decisions on first-hand observations.
