The Modern Magus Magazine

A small forewarning - I will be reviewing the story-lock servant for this Lostbelt chapter, one who has an important role in the story. If you don’t want to be spoilt on their existence, then don’t look anywhere past Caenis’s review.

How’s it hanging, y’all? We got ourselves a bit of a pickle ‘oer here in Olympus right about now. See, when we went through all that kerfuffle back on the land, we just sort of went and assumed that there ‘God’ thing was all a big joke, y’know? I mean, Artemis was just a giant flying uterus or somethin’ like that, so really she coulda been anything from a ‘deep’ 2010’s Trigger anime. But well, it turns out, there really are a buncha’ Gods and Goddesses down in that place. And we’re right and well screwed. Not like some weapon specifically made to force beings with bullshit powers to fight on a human level will fall in our laps or anything, right, Sion Eltnam Sokaris?

Dioscuri

Introduction

Anne+Mary, Ryoma, and I guess Orion (OG) have been all alone in the two-in-one combo bin, so it’s nice to give them a new pair of friends. One, a pretentious ass and siscon. The other, an adorable cinnamon roll who needs protection, but gets it from her brother anyway so there’s no need for you to intervene.

Life is harsh sometimes, isn’t it?

Overview

Have I ever told you God/Demigod servants get amazing base stats? No? Let me reiterate then - Gods get whack base stats.

For a 5* Saber, Dioscuri have slightly-above curve base attack, sitting higher than Mordred and below Musashi, but in exchange have some extra chunky HP. How chunky exactly? Well, they beat Mordred in HP by a decent margin, too, and have the 3rd highest HP of any Saber overall. 6th best Attack and 3rd best HP is far from a bad combo, nicely balanced.

...but it gets better.

Count those passives. Don’t worry, I’ll wait. Yep, seven passives total, and unlike Alter-egos and similar blue-balling servants, all of them are ‘real’ passives. Space Ishtar got the record under half a year ago and is already beaten! So, to go in order:

  • Magic Resistance A gives you your standard Saber ‘I’ll sometimes shrug off a debuff and laugh’ perk. No Goddess Core for this duo means they don’t pack the super-resistance some divine servants boast, but hey, still neat.
  • Riding B rank for that teeny 8% boost to Quick cards. They have two of ‘em, and spoiler alert, you want to use their Quicks whenever they pop up, so this is undoubtedly handy.
  • Madness Enhancement B-...didn’t expect that one, must admit. I suppose...Castor himself apparently manifested as an Avenger while in the class of Saber (it’s weird), so I guess this is his? At any rate, Busters go boom boom, what’s not to like?
Three Classic
  • Ah, yes, the combination of skills we all know and love. To sum it up, They get 6% extra crit damage, gain roughly 3.6% NP gauge per hit taken instead of 3%, and charge 3% gauge per turn automatically. Oh, and your allies get prank’d and get debuffed more easily, but who cares about that?
  • Lastly, SUPER DIVINITY! Who cares about the 225 bonus damage on every card - these two get a 5% NP gain and stargen bonus passively! That kind of thing adds up, you know (not the stargen, it’s entirely insignificant, but you get my point).

So in short, good bases, a load of good passives. Dioscuri are off to a good start.

Conclusion

So, how are the twins in all their blondie bishounen/jou glory? On one hand, you can’t name a more iconic duo:

Self-consistency almost seems like the motto of this pair. Excellent NP gain, excellent stargen, a kit which allows them to get both stars and NP gauge regardless of card pulls, and a focus on NP spam which gives them an advantage to press with it. You could honestly reasonably run them with no 2030 support from their allies so long as they’re both Casters, with how well rounded the two’s stargen is.

An excellent offense built for Arts spam teams. Their NP is very easy to set up for looping on a ST boss, ignores most defensive buffs that can cause hiccups, and pushes momentum forward instead of being a one-and-done sort of deal. While their solo NP damage and bonuses for crit damage are rather minimalistic, they compensate with just the raw consistency they boast when given even just the basic Paracelsus/Tamamo/Asclepius/Nero Bride/Lanling support.

Reasonable durability. With their high HP pool, passive debuff res, 1-time debuff immunity, and an evasion skill, the twins will handle most of the annoying mechanics to be thrown their way versus difficult content. The presence of an evasion is especially important when conventional Arts teams lack a team evasion/invincible option like Merlin and Skadi can provide.

However, they’re also something of a recipe for disaster:

Compared to the perks of some Quick spammers, they face tough competition. Skadi as a support can more or less prop any NP spammer once they can reach 50% refund, which tends to number a handful of strong ST options, such as Kama, Melt, Atalanta Alter, Diarmuid Saber, and so on. By comparison, Dioscrui need to hit close to or directly on 100%, which either needs a very precise setup or card luck, neither are as convenient.

Dioscuri are also lacking in the critical damage department, possessing only Saber star weight, a minor passive critical damage buff and no such oriented skills in their kit. Even very basic Sabers like Okita or Caesar have much stronger tools to support their critical damage, which can often add up more than NP’s in a team context.

So on the whole, Dioscuri are strong Arts-based Sabers which, while possessing all the tools necessary to excel at such a role, also suffer from the drawbacks of their kit’s focus on consistency and the card type. While they won’t pull out jaw-dropping damage numbers or work with steadfast consistency regardless of the enemy composition, they work for their role and do it with a number of unique tools (primary their NP’s Absolute Penetration, as weird as it may sound with that phrasing) to support both themselves and their team. Rath™ Seal of Approval.

Caenis

Introduction

Sometimes you just need some of that tanned athletic tomboy type to shout at you, call you a bastard, be as quintessentially rude as possible, but get flustered in a storm when anything romantic flies their way.

Just try to forget Caenis is a guy in the sense of both what they want to be, and what they should be. As well as being another addition to the androgynous Servant list. Think of it like a Kama situation at any rate. They do have some pretty feminine hobbies, just saying.

Overview

In terms of base stats, Caenis does a good job of highlighting how ridiculous Arturia Alter Lancer’s bases are. Despite standing well above every other 4* Lancer in attack, they’re surpassed by Lancer Alter in BOTH attack and HP, and by a good margin at that. The Saberface favoritism has to end someday.

At any rate, Caenis enjoys the perks of the Lancer class’s solid bases and 1.05 attack modifier on top of their high stats to begin with, making them both reasonably durable and very strong offensively for their rarity. On top of that, they have good Magic Resistance, 225 damage up at all times from their Divinity, and both a 12% Buster boost and 8% Arts boost built into their passives. For a Buster-centric Lancer, those are some solid perks to have.

Conclusion

So how is Caenis? On one hand, they’re making the seas part for them:

Caenis packs some vicious offensive prowess. Their card set, high attack, passive boost to Buster cards and multitude of offensive buffs means they’ll be hitting at full power most of the time, then again with the crit damage boost from their NP.

Defensively, Caenis is quite sturdy. Their Trident of Plunder combined with their damage cut means in a singular boss scenario they can negate quite a bit of damage, while still having the Guts buff in their 3rd skill for backup if things goes awry.

Caenis may not be in the Dioscuri level of independence for NP gain / stargen, but they’re not the type to need a direct injection of Waver/Skadi/Reines every quest to ever get their NP or crits off. Much of Caenis’s offenses is taken care of by their own kit, meaning you can instead focus on compensating for their setbacks, such as their insufficient stargen or unideal defensive tools.

On the other, they can’t command the waves to retreat:

Caenis’s means of gaining offensive power can be a bit finicky at times - in the case of their NP, using Trident of Plunder means choosing between gaining extra damage for the brave chain or extra damage for the NP itself. And in some cases you’d like to have both. Not to mention most of that damage will run its course in a single turn, which makes it a little restrictive to get crit damage off optimally.

While I have noted Caenis’s NP gain isn’t the worst, it’s still BBAQQ card set with no gauge chargers built in, which on top of their mediocre stargen means they’ll have to rely on supports for those things. It isn’t too limiting considering Merlin is perfect for Caenis and provides all they need, but it can limit CE options if you want a NP off the bat for certain fights.

On the whole, Caenis is a strong Lancer with a focus on raw damage, flexible durability and a savage crit turn to exploit with their NP. I’ve compared them to Lancer Arturia Alter a lot, and the reason is simply because the two are very similar in how they end up performing, both with good AOE NP damage, savage crit damage windows and a focus on one-turn burst. Both have some things the other lacks, but both are strong Lancer options regardless, and can perform “like an SSR” if given grails. Let’s hope Caenis gets a NP interlude somewhat soon down the line, though. Rath™ Seal of Approval.
