MMM Summer 2024 Part 2

The Modern Magus Magazine

And the onslaught continues for this humble writer. I’m gonna be frank, the changes to Google Play transactions in FGO are the primary cause for my delays on this one, I initially wanted to have a hand at the Servants in the second gacha before writing the MMM, but hey, if Google Play doesn’t want me to give Lasengle money, power to them.

Since I expect that statement will draw some comments offering help - don’t worry, I’m sorting it out.

Ibuki won’t elude me, mark my words. Hopefully. Maybe.

Summer 2024 Part 2

Ibuki-Douji (Berserker)

Introduction

Raita bless. That’s all I really need to say. Madman somehow managed to fit the Jack-o pose into FGO and make it look fitting. And on one of his infamously thicc character designs, it looks downright scandalous.

Dragonkin EX

Increase own Buster Card effectiveness by 12%.
Apply Damage Cut by 200 to self.

Core of the Serpent God A

Overview

As an SSR Berserker, Ibuki has the honor of benefitting from the second-most offensive base stats of any class, in the most offensively oriented class in the game.

So to put another world of hurt on top, she decided to come packing with the new highest Attack stat of any Berserker in the game. And she does so while also (somehow) coming in with the tied 3rd worst HP stat, instead of dead last.

It goes without saying that in the hyper-offensive class that doesn’t care too much about their HP since they die to a stiff fart regardless, having that much attack is the ideal. And boy does she hit it.

Supplementing her incredible base stats are, of course, passives. Her Berserker class skill isn’t looking too hot to begin with, E-rank Madness Enhancement not really doing much for her Buster cards, but it’s paired with her unique (well, shared by her vanilla form) passive of Dragon Kin, providing her with a huge Buster boost by comparison, and a flat 200 damage cut to all incoming attacks she takes.

I’m quite certain I said something similar for the original Ibuki, but 200 damage cut passively really adds up over long fights, especially if you’re not eating big hits or NP’s willy-nilly. Naturally as a Berserker she’s less likely to endure damage in general, but anything to help her bulk is nice in the long run. The significant improvement to her Buster cards is more noticeable, naturally.

Lastly on the passives front is Serpent Goddess Core, granting her a Divinity-style damage boost, and giving her passive Buff Removal Resist, much like her normal form. While the unreliability of this passive proccing means you can’t exactly depend on Ibuki to no-sell buff removal effects, it is ultimately extremely impactful when it does apply, especially since gauge break buff removals tend to be fairly common in difficult content.

Overall, Ibuki is an absolute house to contend with just from her baseline stats.

Conclusion

How is Ibuki’s summer form on the whole? Well she’s certainly got me cheering for her:

I really can’t understate how impactful it is to have a universal farmer who clears pretty much every node in existence on budget setups (Well, you need to own Castoria, I guess) while also being a less complex 3-turn loop than competitors like Melusine. I can’t really even envision a drawback for her when farming, outside of getting stonewalled on the blue moon that the boss Servant for the node is a Foreigner. But really, is that such a huge loss when most Servants have to avoid about 1/7 of all classes?

Farming aside, Ibuki makes for a menace in high-difficulty content, as well. Her ability to loop serves her as effectively in such scenarios, and she also gets to put her potent Critical Damage dealer niche to use, generating a flat sum of stars, scooping them up due to her Star Focus, then showing that her colossal attack stat isn’t just for show. With the small utility tools also packed into her kit, it’s not like she’s only bringing damage to the table, either.

On the other hand, she really needs to make sure her skeleton is fine with how much she’s bending her back:

I might be scraping the barrel a little here, but in spite of how much the Arts meta and Ibuki’s own kit compensate for it, her poor base NP gain is a hefty drawback. It may not come up often, but in content like Grail Fronts, Ibuki may struggle to actually get her gauge charged all on her lonesome, especially when she’s already expended her skills on prior turns. Like I said earlier, Lasengle had to slap her somewhere, it’s just an area that doesn’t really impact her usefulness outside of niche situations.

What more can I say? She’s technically Shuten so she’s already perfect, but that gameplay kit is just the icing on the cake. Ibuki solidly takes the benchmarks for competing universal Arts farmers and shatters them, leaving even the likes of Space Ishtar looking a little mediocre in her wake. Paired with her powerful performance outside of farming, there’s a plethora of reasons to add her to your roster, even if you have your farming covered by other Servants.

She’s yet another standard-setting farmer to the pile, but that doesn’t make her any less impressive for it. You could probably clear all the content in the game with her and the supports necessary to make an Arts team if you tried.

Rath™ Seal of Approval, with a recommendation.

Utsumi Erice (Avenger)

Introduction

I think Erice needs to evaluate her understanding of swimwear. Whether you’re in the edgelord class or not, breaching proper attire on the beach isn’t a sin you can perform willy-nilly.

But hey, it’s not Summer without eye-candy.

Divinity E

Overview

Funnily, despite how old the class is, we still don’t have many 4* Avengers in the game. The same number as we do Alter-Egos, despite the latter being introduced a fair bit later. In any case, there’s enough fellow SR Avengers to compare Erice to, and she doesn’t stack up too well.

With the 2nd worst Attack and Worst HP of her class/rarity bracket, Erice is simply pretty underpowered in the stats department. While being in the Avenger class ultimately means her offenses are amazing regardless, it does result in a pretty severe hit to her HP, giving her the worst HP of any 4* in the game, lesser than many 3*’s. That hit to her durability may come back to bite her, but having a solid offense is fundamentally more important, even if it’s mediocre for an Avenger.

On the Passives side of things, Erice is loaded with the typical Avenger class skill combo - Avenger bolsters her defensive NP gain, Oblivion Correction provides a minor critical damage boost, and Self-Restoration provides her a flat 4.2% gauge each turn, a significant contributor to her NP gain overall.

Furthermore, Erice is packing 3 personal skills - Riding to provide a boost to her Quicks, Independent action to further increase her critical damage passively, and Divinity to provide her with a minor flat damage boost and make her weak to the anti-God paddles that are scattered throughout the game.

While her base statline may not exactly be the greatest, Erice has an extremely stacked passive lineup which compensates quite nicely, even if half of it is a given for her class.

Conclusion

So how does Erice perform in practice? One the one hand, she’s death incarnate to all who witness her:

Erice has really good damage output, especially considering she’s an SR with no NP interlude to speak of. She hits damage numbers competing with some of the renowned SSR powerhouses in the game, and backs it up with some pretty good critical damage output to supplement her high-impact NP. While that’s all on the assumption she’s fighting Servants, when you’re a ST Servant you’re pretty much facing your own kind 90% of the time, so it’s a fair assumption to make.

Her kit isn’t all damage, either. Her Evasion buff means she has some defensive tools outside of what her supports can provide, and her Taunt skill allows her to even leverage it to score additional damage against her foes, as well as conserve the HP of her allies. I didn’t touch on it too much, but it’s also worth bearing in mind with the Avenger class’s high defensive NP gain, taunting the enemy is almost like having a gauge charger if the enemy attack hitcounts are good - Erice scores 30% gauge from each 5-hit attack she takes, for example.

However, she’s also on course for a wipeout if she’s not careful:

While Erice’s damage numbers versus Servants are excellent, it does mean she’s a little more lackluster in ST Farming scenarios, as rare as they are. Usually only the final wave is a Servant, and before then Erice will likely struggle to meet damage benchmarks without class advantage when tackling beefy miniboss-type generics with 100k+ HP pools. While farming ST nodes aren’t particularly common (albeit, there’s one in the current event), it’s still an area you would think Erice could tackle, but can’t in practice, at least without class advantage.

I’ll be frank, I wasn’t expecting much of her, but Erice’s summer form is shockingly really solid. While her kit pretty much only makes her useful in CQ’s and other high-difficulty content, her performance as a damage dealer is nothing if not spectacular, with her only real flaw to speak of in such situations being her poor HP stat and lack of Star Focus to take advantage of her critical damage niche easily.

But the meat and potatoes of Erice’s damage lies in her NP, which she can charge up fairly quickly and unleash to devastating effect, wiping most boss’s gauge bars in one go each time she uses it, provided her buff window is active.

Fundamentally she’s good, effective fun should you look for a ST Avenger who can really bring the hurt with few strings attached. And call me if she ever procs that Instant Death effect and it actually matters. I need it for research purposes. Rath™ Seal of Approval.

Outro

Evening of the 2nd MMM - 1 MMM remains.

As I said before, I feel a little guilty for getting this out so slowly, but I was struggling to find the time/motivation throughout the week. It does help that unlike some Summers, pretty much every Servant involved thus far has been interesting, if not simply statistically good, filling in my motivation with intrigue if nothing else.

Next time we’ll be finishing up with the Ice Queen of the event, an Empress who suddenly became more boing-boing, and covering 3 Servants in one with a level of efficiency you’ve never seen before. Until then!
