Rabbit's Reviews #318: Trung Sisters (5* Saber)

Introduction

There are a lot of ST Arts Sabers. With kits as diverse as Hokusai, Dioscuri, Beni-Enma, Munenori, and so on, there’s not a lot of call for another one without anything particularly unique to set it apart. Unfortunately for the Trung Sisters, this kit is about as plain as they come. The Trung sisters do have a number of nice things going for them—decent steroids, good refund, party healing and NP gain buffs—but nothing they do goes beyond generically good, and there are more than enough generically good ST Arts Saber, some of whom are substantially cheaper. There’s nothing wrong with the Trung Sisters, really—if you pull for them and like them enough to invest, they’ll probably feel pretty strong—but they’re also an expensive investment with limited value over other options, which makes them pretty forgettable from a mechanical standpoint.

Servant Skills

The Trung sisters have the basic damage-dealing tools, but aside from that their skillset is about as simple as it gets. Recommended skill order is 3>1>2.

The sisters’ Charisma gives a lower attack buff than is typical—15% instead of 20% at max level—in exchange for tacking on an Arts buff instead. This is a decent boost to party damage, if the sisters aren’t being run as a solo damage-dealer, and it’s also a passable self-buff. The Arts side of this increases NP gain as well as damage, which is helpful both to the sisters’ own functioning and to supports’ ability to get reliable access to their NPs. Solid skill; mostly forgettable.

Sisters’ Bond is a very weak three-turn Arts and Buster buff, capping out at a measly 15%—barely better than a passive skill. In exchange for the low buff value, the skill has an unusually low cooldown, meaning it’ll be active most of the time. This isn’t a great trade—again, the sisters could have Territory Creation EX and Madness Enhancement EX and have almost the same value, without eating a skill slot—but there’s logic to it, at least. The skill then also gives an additional 10% buff each time the sisters use an Arts or a Buster, providing a buff to the opposite card type. 10% is not a lot, and it only lasts for a turn, but it’s a marginal boost to ABA or BAB chains, and it means the sisters can maximize their NP damage with a BBNP chain in a pinch. From one perspective, it gives them some extra flexibility to maximize the effectiveness of different card draws, but from another, the sisters’ ideal chain is still an NPAA chain, and this provides no benefit to that at all. Overall it’s a minor boost to turns with weaker card draws, rather than an actual increase to their performance ceiling. The skill as a whole is fine. Consistency tools are generally nice, and that’s what this is, but something that pushes their ceiling higher would probably be more beneficial.

Good Queen Trung is a 30% battery, which is nice by default. It also provides partywide NP gain up 20% to boost Trung’s NP gain a little bit as well as increase the consistency with which supports can NP. Between skill 1 and skill 3, the Trung Sisters provide a fair bit of partywide NP gain up, which can be handy if you struggle to get your supports consistent NP access… but that’s not usually a problem for Arts team anyway, so the practical value of this is somewhat questionable. Lastly, the skill grants the party 20% crit resistance, which is also nice for stability but also not a massive benefit. Decent skill overall, but most of the value is in the battery.

Usage Tips

The Trung sisters will operate most effectively over short bursts with two Castorias, as well as a plug Tamamo for maximum damage or a plug Oberon for maximum loop consistency. The sisters have good enough NP gain that they should be able to loop without too much card RNG in those setups, dealing decent damage over the course of three turns.

In order for the sisters’ unique value—their heals—to really shine, though, you’ll need to lean into stall setups. For stall teams, you want one Castoria, and one useful secondary support. The obvious picks here are Reines and Tamamo. Tamamo helps with skill cycling and damage, while also providing additional healing, in exchange for some awkward NP timing issues with Castoria and greater risk of being left without Solemn Defense on an NP turn. With Tamamo teams, the goal is generally to set up a Trung -> Tamamo -> Castoria NP chain. You have enough Arts and NP Gain up that Castoria can afford to miss out on the NP charge from Tamamo’s NP, while an extra hit of Solemn Defense will periodically save runs. Reines teams are a bit cleaner, and Reines -> Trung -> Castoria chains should still provide solid damage from Trung while providing almost the maximum possible number of Solemn Defense charges. In both of these teams, Castoria and the support ideally want Prisma Cosmos as their CEs, if you can manage to survive the turn or two it takes to build to their first NP chains.

The sisters’ healing and general consistency, though, means they can get away with stall teams that use lesser secondary supports. Mash/Trung/Castoria, for example, should also be able to survive pretty effectively. Servants like Lanling and Waver can also work effectively for similar reasons. You can also pick a damage-dealer who benefits from the sisters’ AoE buffs and provides additional buffs of their own to create a similar effect. Nemo, for instance, is a great pick on Waterside or Void Space fields specifically, and Beni has some nice synergy in cases where additional utility is needed.

The sisters’ healing means they can safely run the Black Grail for damage even when stalling, and there’s little reason not to do that. Ocean Flyer and Painting Summer also work if you need starting NP, though, and if you don’t have Black Grail you can run something like Heaven’s Feel, Formal Craft, or Mark on a Smiling Face to similar effect.

Since the sisters can maximize their NP damage by placing their Buster cards before their NP, command codes that increase NP damage are a great fit for their busters. Aside from that, CCs that grant NP gain are generally nice. You may also want to increase star weight on their Arts cards, in order to help a bit with damage push and NP gain.

Grail Potential

Conclusion

The sisters are an utterly normal Arts unit. Their damage isn’t horribly low, but it’s not especially high either. They have a fair number of consistency tools, but no ways to handle distinct CQ gimmicks and no hard survival tools. They feel very much like a gen-pool SSR—a nice spook, but not someone to target. Unfortunately, the sisters are both limited and outshone by existing Servants, which means they don’t have much of a value proposition. That said, they’re at least solid at their core, and if you like them you can probably use them to good effect, so it could be worse.
