Common Skills Tournament

Hello, again Explorers! we have yet another skills tournament this weekend and it will feature Common dinos. We have had this tournament in the past, but the addition of the No Escape ability, you might think about different creatures this time. Here are the details on it:

Once again, the entry fee is free so it doesn't hurt to enter. And since it is skilled you have a chance at those top prizes if you are able to put in the time to battle.

Common Dinos

Since only one rarity this is an extremely small pool of creatures to choose from compared to other skilled tournaments. In total, there are 34 different creatures you can play with.

So which Dinos are the best?

To answer that we went back to our Battle Simulator tool and did a simulation of all common dinos against each other.

Before we reveal the results though, our usual disclaimer. This tool is a great way for us to see how creatures do in a 1v1 situation, but keep in mind we play with a 4 dino team. This is a new and updated simulator that we hope will bring more accurate results to our analysis. We have created a new field that analyzes swaps. In the previous iteration of the simulator, a dino that has a swap out move would perform that move but, stay in the battle and that could skew some of the results. Now, if a dino performs a swap out move the battle will end and a score is applied based on a complex formula we won't bore you with. In the image below, you will see dinos like Paramoloch that have a 0% loss rate and that is because they always swap out in the simulator to save itself and never technically die because the battle ends at that point. Swapping isn't a good or a bad thing as it solely depends on the course of the battle and what creature is being swapped in to. The sim still uses swap in moves about 50% of the time. So any creature with a swap in or swap out move may not show favorable and could still be a good option on your team. Y.

Because we love infographics, we created one to show the top 20 Common creatures. Below each image, you will see the win (green), loss (red), and swap out (blue) percentages. The swap-out percentage is when either dino swaps out of the match and the battle essentially ends.

So without further ado, here are the top Common Hybrid creatures ranked in order according to the simulator we ran:

Dracorex Gen2

As always, DG2 does not make an appearance at the top of the sims because swap-in abilities don't generally show well in the simulator. Dracorex Gen2 will do 40% damage on the swap in with its Swap in Savagery move. It doesn't go through armor or shields, however, and you will see a lot of armor and shields in this tournament. It can also be stun locked if they swap in a creature with swap in stun and they stun you the same time Dg2 comes in. So if you decide to use it on your team, use it wisely.

Building your team

First of all, don't just pick the top 8 and go with those. As we mentioned, the sim is a head to head match up visualization so there are plenty of dinos that work well on a team that may not necessarily be in the top 20. And some of them may just end up being set up fodder for the next dino. With all of the ceratopsians and other swap-in ability dinos available, we feel like this is going to be a very swap heavy tournament. Experiment and see what works best for you. Ideally, you want a diverse group so you need speed, armor, tanks and probably a couple of counter attackers as well.

Miragaia is a force to be reckoned with for a common dino. It has a shielding decelerating strike that allows it to always maintain speed control. It also has Regeneration and a full 1x armor-piercing counter-attack. With that, it can do 2700 attack every turn.

To deal with Miragaia  (and any armored dinos) you will probably want to bring some chompers. Tarbosaurus and Allosaurus are both great options for this. Tarbosaurus has a 40% crit chance but 50 less damage and 120 less HP than Allosaurus. They both have the same speed, however, so they are great options to have on the team.

With the change to Dracorex Gen 2, Velociraptor has the opportunity to make its return. It can't be one-shot by the swap in anymore and will probably be used best to come in and clean up a dino before swapping to something else. It still has pretty low health (1650) and even with the distraction with pounce, it can't stay on the field for too long. It is the fastest dino, however, so it could be good on the team. It is also the only creature that can one shot and take out Miragaia.

Ophiacodon is also one you won't want to ignore. It is immune so it can't be slowed, bled, or distracted, and it has a 40% critical chance and a rampage move that hits hard. All of that combined with a pretty high health pool (4290), you are going to want to watch out for this one. Its weakness is its speed (107) so fielding some faster creatures that have high turn 1 moves could help.

The ceratopsians (Triceratops Gen2 and Einiosaurus) could also play a big role in this tournament. They have a swap in stunning strike that goes through armor and even if the stun doesn't land they can still often take out a dino. Plus, Einio has a regen move that will allow you to swap in, regenerate (to cleanse the lockdown) and then swap back out to another swap in dino if you are able to.

Finally, we want to talk about Sarcosuchus and Purussaurus. Specifically because of their new ability, No Escape. Unless you are immune or immune to swap prevention you will not be able to swap out of either of these creatures. This means they can work well a the end of the match and bring them in on a low health dino and there is nothing your opponent can do about it. If your opponent brings out either of these creatures and you do have an immune dino on the field, be careful what you swap into because they could also be pinned.

Concluding Thoughts

The common skills tournaments are always fun as we can play with creatures we haven't seen in a while. Our discord has already been buzzing about their teams and what will be the best dinos to have. While the simulator isn't the end all be all, hopefully, it helps you get an idea of what dinos might be good to use. Since this is a skills tournament, all the creature levels are set and friendly battles will be a great way to practice. Try a variety of different dinos and see what works best for you. Most importantly, have fun! Make sure to join our discord to get in on the discussion as well!
