Sanctuary Overview

Sanctuary Load Screen

There's a brand new feature in Jurassic World Alive: and they're called Sanctuaries.

We already gave a brief overview of what we knew about Sanctuaries based on the patch notes, but there were a lot of questions left unanswered. Some of these questions we can answer now. Some may come later. We'll be sure to update this article as we learn more.

If you don't know what a Sanctuary is, check out our patch notes guide on it below.

Sanctuary Level

The first thing you'll notice about a Sanctuary is the level of that sanctuary when you approach it. The level appears as  a rotating number around the top of the Sanctuary, and Sanctuaries are located randomly on the map just like Strike Towers (not exclusive to parks or certain types of stops).

You can level up a Sanctuary from level 1 to level 20, and each level gives you one new slot to use for putting creatures inside as well as increasing the amount of DNA you get from creatures you interact with in the enclosures.

Sanctuary Level

Clicking on the Sanctuary also shows you a few other things. It shows you the time left until the Sanctuary resets (each sanctuary resets after 14 days) and it shows you the top creatures currently in that Sanctuary.

Enclosures

Enclosure Empty

Once you enter a Sanctuary, you'll notice you can swipe left or right to see the various enclosures. These enclosures are essentially different locales where your dinosaurs can be. For the moment, though the scenery in the background changes for each enclosure, it doesn't seem like there's any difference in placing creatures in one over the other. But we will validate that data shortly and update this article if that isn't the case.

Each enclosure houses up to 8 dinosaurs, and each level up of the Sanctuary adds one more slot. You can personally place up to 4 dinosaurs total in Sanctuaries at any one time. Below I've placed all four in a level 1 sanctuary, but you could place two in one and two in another or one dino in four separate sanctuaries -- but the cap is four dinos at any one time can be out among the many possible sanctuaries.

Placing Dinos In Enclosures

There are certain dinosaurs that can and cannot be placed in a Sanctuary. If a dinosaur is on your strike team, you cannot place it in a Sanctuary. If you remove it from your strike team, you can then place it (as long as the creature is not too powerful for your player level).

In additional to creatures on that are on your strike team, they clarified that there are some additional creatures that cannot be placed in sanctuaries:

  • Creatures that you already placed in another Sanctuary (creatures can’t be in two places at once!).

  • Creatures that are too dangerous for your current Player Level, as shown on their creature portrait.

  • Flying creatures.*

  • Cenozoic creatures.

* They are working on Sanctuaries so they can welcome flying and cenozoic creatures in the future.

Each species also has a different level of danger so you have to be a higher player level before you can care for the more “dangerous creatures”. If the creature is too dangerous, it will be indicated on their portrait in the Enclosure and you can’t place it until you reach the appropriate player level.

In the example below, my player level was 19 and Pachy required a player level of 20 before it could be placed in the enclosure. When I clicked Pachy, I got the below message. You can also see my strike team in gray (not able to place in an enclosure) and Erlikomimus has the logo that shows I'd already placed it in another Sanctuary.

Caring For Creatures

Sanctuaries are public, so you can place a creature and care for your own creature, but you can also care for other players’ creatures to collect additional DNA. Caring for creatures (yours and others) awards both DNA and sanctuary points. Sanctuary points will increase your sanctuary level. The higher level, the higher rewards. Higher rarity and higher level creatures will award more points.

Clicking on any creature (yours or someone elses) will bring up the below menu where you can choose to interact with the creature, feed the creature, or play with the creature.

Interaction items are gained only from the free 6 hour incubator that comes up for everyone every 6 hours.

Food and Toys are gained from spinning supply drops.

Your inventory holds up to 12 food items, 12 toys, and 8 interaction items. You can see how many you have by clicking your inventory or by clicking on any creature in a Sanctuary to interact.

The trick is figuring out what your creature needs in order to produce the most DNA. Some creatures prefer playing, while others prefer eating or being interacted with. There is a preview tooltip you can use by pressing and holding the care button to see how much DNA you will get for each action. Experiment with different combinations to maximize the DNA received.

Creature rarity produces different amounts of DNA as well. Common creatures give more DNA than Rare, which in turn gives more than Epic. The needs of creatures will reset every 3 hours so check on them often to maximize the DNA output.

The below example shows you what it looks like when choosing which caring actions to take for your creatures and some of the differences between the DNA gained. The top number is the number of Sanctuary Points that action will award to the Sanctuary. The bottom is the number of DNA you will be immediately given for feeding/interacting/playing with the creature. Note, I'm looking at a level 1 Sanctuary and an Epic creature so the DNA gains are about as small as they can get. They only grow from here.

Sharing Sanctuaries

The moment you add a creature to a Sanctuary, it will immediately be shared with your alliance. The sharing icon comes up on the Alliance screen. You can see the icon in the upper right corner of the image below:

sharing with alliances

Once you click on this icon, you can take a look at up to 100 sanctuaries that have been shared by your alliance mates and click into each one to visit it from afar.

These Sanctuaries will stay on the list for 24 hours, unless someone adds another dinosaur to a sanctuary -- in which case the 24 hour timer restarts and it will again be viewable for 24 hours. The list of shared Sanctuaries looks like this below:

Collecting DNA and Retrieving Dinosaurs

The final big question that was asked a few times was how to collect your dinosaurs once the timer runs out. Thankfully, these dinosaurs are literally returned to your inventory without any action needed at all. You simply click on your inventory (it'll show a red number to indicate you've got dinos ready to be retrieved) and you will see all the dinos to collect.

The screenshot below shows an example:

In Conclusion

Overall we are very excited about this new feature. It will be a good way to get more DNA from creatures we don't see as often. Arena exclusive and hard to find creatures (Irriatator anyone?) will benefit most from being placed in sanctuaries. Also, using the shared sanctuaries within your alliance will also give you a variety of creatures to interact with. We can’t wait to see how these work in the wild!

We'll continue to dig into the data for a more complete guide on levels of sanctuaries and the sanctuary points needed for each one and keep you updated once we know more.

In the meantime, enjoy these images of our lovely T-Rex eating a goat and chomping on a tire, and join our discord to dive into the conversation today!
