Koukan
Expand
Koukan (a Touhou LW original) refers to a corona, an optical phenomenon where a circle of light surrounds the sun or moon due to diffraction. An apt temperament for Keine, who records history according to the cycles of the sun and moon. Keine is endowed with Earth Phase, with her acceptance and creation of history, and Sun Essence, as she strictly adheres to rules.

The encompassing and regenerative Earth Phase resists Fire Phase, because fire produces earth, but it is weak to Wood Phase, because wood parts earth.

The alluring and arrogant Sun Essence resists the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence, but it is weak to the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence.

Character Shots

Keine Kamishirasawa's Spread Shot (a Touhou LW original). An attack that may reduce the lifespan of the target. In various mythologies throughout the world, there are many tales of people with unnaturally long life spans, which could indicate that the lifespan of humans has deteriorated since the age of myth. However, it is theorized that these historic legends were modified so certain people could seize or maintain power.

The creation of heaven and earth is detailed in the Kojiki, an ancient chronicle of Japanese myths. However, it is speculated that this part of the text was added generations after the chronicle was first compiled.

This sacred sword is also known as Kusanagi no Tsurugi, the grass-cutting sword, and it is a repository of the great god Amaterasu's divine spirit. According to legend, the sword was found in the body of Yamata no Orochi, the eight-headed serpent, by the god Susanoo when he cut off one of its tails.

The earliest known usage of the term ''land of the rising sun'' was in a letter addressed to the Sui Emperor by Prince Shoutoku, where he referred to Empress Suiko, the sovereign of Wa (ancient Japan) as the sovereign of the land of the rising sun. Miko uses a Spell Card with a similar name.

Character Ability

Capable of eating history
Expand
Editing history is Keine Kamishirasawa's ability as a were-hakutaku. In her human form, she is capable of "eating" history, whereas in her hakutaku form, she is capable of "creating" history. This ability is most likely derived from how Chinese mythology portrays the hakutaku as an auspicious beast that appears before monarchs. Perhaps a monarch's power to edit the history books is reflected in this ability that instantly alters history with magic. Records and accounts transcribed into history books that stand the test of time are readily accepted as truth, regardless of their accuracy. Conversely, history books that may actually be true but do not withstand the test of time by either being burnt or expunged in some other manner are thus forgotten and no longer recognized as history. The people of subsequent generations have no other means of knowing what happened in the past, except through the history books that are still available to them, leaving them utterly oblivious to any records that have been erased. This is how the truth is edited. It appears that Keine uses her ability solely for humans. She carefully edits history in order to prevent the occurrence of needless conflicts and disputes. Also, since she only takes the form of a hakutaku when the moon is full, she does all her history editing on this single night each month. (She probably doesn't get much sleep.) While editing history, Keine can recall the truths that she once ate (hid) in her human form, and can edit them back into history if she so wishes. It is assumed that when Keine eats history, those who knew the details that were eaten by Keine pertaining to that particular moment in history forget those details. However, someone older who knew the same details from an earlier moment in history retains that knowledge. It may be possible for Keine to alter the memories and perceptions of specific people by eating different parts of history, which makes this ability an effective tool for protecting humans from youkai.

Character Analysis

Keine Kamishirasawa was released on September 9th, 2021 in "Prayer: Creators of Fiction(?) & Fact." For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Discord Official Discord Server.

Keine Kamishirasawa is a character first introduced to us in Touhou 8: Imperishable Night. Keine's species is specified to us as a "Were-Hakutaku" or a human that can also turn into a hakutaku. On a day-to-day basis, Keine lives and works as a schoolteacher at a human village and also acts as the village's guardian, defending it from any oncoming threats. In her human form, Keine has the unique ability to "consume" history. In simpler terms, this power is simply the concealing of history from outside viewers. In her hakutaku form, which is revealed under the light of a full moon, Keine is able to create history in opposition to her human ability and she is also aware of the entire history of Gensokyo in this state.

For farming, Keine's Last Word deals plenty of damage on turn one, on the likes of other farmers such as Yuyuko Saigyouji or Ran Yakumo. Watch out for the abundance of Sun on it however, as she can run into some problems against Sun resistant enemies as a result.

For harder fights, Keine is most known for the high amounts of Yang DEF up she provides using her second skill, Manuscript giving the entire party 2 Levels of Yang DEF UP for 2 turns, and her third skill Auspicious Omen giving the entire party another 2 Levels of Yang DEF UP for 2 turns. In addition, her Character Ability provides the whole party 1 Level of Yang DEF UP for 1 turn every time she boosts. On surface level, this may look a little weak because it doesn't do anything for damage but that isn't exactly correct. The added Yang DEF is useful for the defense it provides Keine and her teammates but it also meshes well with Hard. This essentially means that, for attackers who are Yang focused and have Hard scaling, Keine is effectively increasing the end result of her damage with their buff, making Keine a potent Hard attacker support. Her All targeting Last Word, Emperor of the Land of the Rising Sun, also possesses 50% Hard and 100% Hard on the first and second + sixth bullets respectively, alongside Gensokyo Killer on bullets three, four, and five. While she would still require some external Yang ATK support to make the most use of this attack, she still matches the likes of Ran Yakumo without any support.

Keine also makes for a alright Sun and Metal Breaker, possessing 2 overall Sun Breaks and 2 Metal Breaks, which only adds to her usefulness. You can also squeeze out an additional 4 Sun Breaks from her Last Word, if you're willing to use it for that purpose. However, no unit is without its faults. The issue with Keine's main utility is that, while still helpful and abundantly desirable, Hard attackers will usually have some sort of DEF support fitted into their kit already which can nullify Keine's overall helpfulness to an extent. In addition, the lack of breaks on her Spell Cards can cause her to fall flat if that is being used as her main utility. Regardless, Keine is an excellent unit that is sure to make an impact on your party.

Here are the relevant scalings for Keine:

1st Spell:
Hard: 0%/60%/60%/0%/60%/70%

2nd Spell:
Hard: 0%/70%/80%/0%/80%/0%

Last Word:
Hard: 50%/100%/0%/0%/0%/100%

Story Card Recommendations

Spell Card

Keine will want Yang ATK up primarily, though any Spirit P support does help for breaks if you're using her for that, albeit her not being the best for it.

Last Word

You can't beat the Laser Bullet power and Yang ATK support that Ordinary Magician gives for Keine.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

It is important that you first prioritize Auspicious Omen, as it the buffs it provides and added Barriers is very useful to Keine's purpose. Secondly, Manuscript is your next priority, as this adds two more levels of party-wide Yang DEF to her arsenal. Lastly, Lecture is useful to supporting Keine's overall damage and the focus helps makes use of her high amounts of DEF.

Character Strengths

+Rather high damage All targeting Last Word that can farm
+Extremely high levels of Yang DEF UP support

Character Weaknesses

-Fairly modest top end for damage without Yang ATK support
-Low Focus UP for a tank.
-Element access is below average, unless willing to use Last Word for Breaking.
