Kosame
Expand
Kosame (a Touhou LW original) refers to rain that lasts for five to six hours with less than 1 mm rainfall per hour. This is an apt temperament for Kogasa, as this is the perfect weather to go outside with an umbrella. Kogasa is endowed with Water Phase, as she is a tool used on rainy days, and with Sun Essence, as she is a tool that blocks rain.

The flexible and patient Water Phase resists Metal Phase, because metal collects water, but it is weak to Earth Phase, because earth directs water.

The alluring and arrogant Sun Essence resists the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence, but it is weak to the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence.

Character Shots

Kogasa Tatara's Spread Shot (a Touhou LW original). She shakes the water off her umbrella while hitting her target with it. You should be careful not to spray other people when shaking your umbrella dry. This umbrella is also Kogasa's body, so maybe this attack is actually a full-body tackle.

Kogasa Tatara's Focus Shot (a Touhou LW original). She opens her umbrella in the wink of an eye and fires a water laser beam! Most people have probably played with umbrellas that automatically open with the touch of a button. But you could annoy someone if you spray water everywhere, so maybe playing with umbrellas is not the best idea.

Kogasa Tatara's Spell Card. She rains tears and raindrops down on her target. The rain seeps deep into your soul when you are sad or depressed. It's like the sky is crying along with you... Everyone feels this way sometimes. However, Kogasa might also be skilled at fake crying to try and surprise people. Tears are a weapon!

Kogasa Tatara's Spell Card. She opens her umbrella and shoots lasers in all directions. If you suddenly open an umbrella in front of a horse, they sometimes jump up in surprise. ''Kasa-odoroki'' (umbrella surprise) is an idiomatic expression in Japanese that alludes to this situation. It is used to indicate that someone was surprised by something trivial. However, anyone would be surprised if they saw this umbrella attack.

Incidentally, in the Kyogen play ''Kogaragasa,'' another idiomatic Japanese expression was used. ''Karakasa-go-kou'' (written with the kanji characters for ''umbrella,'' behind,'' and ''light'') refers to how it looks like someone has a halo around their head when they hold an umbrella.

Kogasa Tatara's Last Word (a Touhou LW original). She summons a storm to rain down the divine power of a dragon onto her target. This dragon supposedly only has one eye and is also a god of wind and rain.

There are also theories that karakasa-obake are the form of a fallen god of blacksmithing because they both only have one eye and one leg. This one leg is similar to the body of a snake, which probably led to this god of blacksmithing becoming conflated with the serpentine dragon god. Isn't there a god in Gensokyo with a deep connection to snakes and war...?

Character Ability

Capable of surprising humans
Expand
Kogasa Tatara's ability as a karakasa-obake. When a tool is neither broken nor given a proper sendoff, the god residing within the tool gets angry and becomes a youkai―a tsukumogami. You might think that since Kogasa is a tsukumogami, she would want to make the humans tremble in fear and regret what they have done... but she says her true objective is to surprise people.

Apparently, Kogasa is a youkai who eats the spirits of humans by surprising them. This may seem strange at first, but a word that means ''to be startled'' in Japanese is ''tamageru,'' which can be written with the kanji characters for ''soul'' and ''disappear.'' It is said that a person's soul disappears when they get surprised... So these souls probably disappear into Kogasa's stomach. Unfortunately, the humans in the village are used to the antics of youkai, so they don't really react to Kogasa's tricks. However, the children love them, and Kogasa works as a babysitter since the job suits her umbrella-holding form. (There is apparently a babysitter with an umbrella in the outside world or something.)

Kogasa is on quite friendly terms with the humans for a youkai. Karakasa-obake are also a famous type of youkai who are loved for their cute appearance. However, karakasa-obake are said to be the fallen form of a certain god of blacksmithing. They supposedly inherited their single leg and eye from this god. There is no proof to this claim, but there may be a connection considering how skilled Kogasa is at blacksmithing.

Character Analysis

Kogasa Tatara was released on June 19th, 2022 in "Festival Prayer: Mountain God & Umbrella Surprise." For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Discord Official Discord Server.

Kogasa Tatara is a karakasa obake who first appeared in Touhou 12: Undefined Fantastic Object. A karakasa obake is a kind of Tskumogami who are umbrellas with one eye and a massive tongue. Kogasa found herself in Gensokyo as a normal umbrella left deserted in the outside world and is known for her (mostly unsuccessful) attempts to scare and surprise others (mainly humans), and when they don’t work in her favor, it can be quite a downer for our turquoise haired friend.

Kogasa unfortunately does not have any notable farming stages, however, she has some decent surprises up her sleeve, from Spirit P up on her Spell Card Pre-ATKs and a handy ability to boot, allowing her to benefit from anomaly inflictions, and with an anomaly breaking Last Word that can be boosted immensely by a farmable Story Card that boosts both Energy and Yin ATK (Kogasa’s Last Word uses both), this may make this karakasa actually successful in spooking an enemy in question for 1 turn.

Nonfarming  content, however, is where Kogasa can be utilized more. Kogasa has quite the handful of Water Breaks that can definitely compete with other Water Breakers, including her Spread Shot, Dripping Umbrella, having P0 Water. That being said, her Last Word, One-Eyed Dragon of Mt. Tado, has only 2 of Water and 2 of Metal breaks, with the latter only appearing in here. All in all, while only 2 Water Breaks in Kogasa’s strongest attack may not sound like the best thing in the world, there is more that Kogasa can do that isn’t just elements. As for anomalies, Kogasa’s Ability to scare humans means that she benefits from anomaly inflictions from Paralyse and Blind. When Kogasa is inflicted by the former, her Yang ATK, Yin ATK, Crit ATK and Crit Accuracy go up, and as for the latter, it boosts Agility, ACC and Evasion. However, Compared to other units who work similarly with anomaly inflictions, Kogasa doesn’t seem to take advantage of this much, as she can only give herself one of each through her Skills (more on Skills later). That being said, anomaly break potential does exist in One-Eyed Dragon of Mt. Tado, with the power to break any Paralyze and Blind anomalies of that target. It’s also important to note that the Killer accessibility is hardly there, with only Fairies and Humans being affected by some bullet lines overall. Kogasa is also very selfish and lacking a lot of team utility, as you’re about to see in the next paragraph…

As mentioned earlier, Kogasa can inflict anomalies on herself via skills. Her first skill, Storm Skipping, can Increase Kogasa’s Agility by 3 stages while giving herself a single layer of Paralyze with her second, Rain Forecast, being able to boost her Yin DEF, also by 3 stages while inflicting herself with a layer of Blind. Finally, her last skill, White Fox Protection, is probably her best one to have, as it boosts both Yang ATK and Yin ATK by 3 stages (the former isn’t that useful to Kogasa though). It’s also worth noting that all the effects in the first 2 Skills last for 3 Turns, but the effects from Skill 3 only last for 1 Turn. Unfortunately, Kogasa isn’t self sufficient with Spirit P gain from skills, but her Spirit P gain from her Pre-ATKs on her Spell Cards don’t disappoint, as both Umbrella Sign: Lightly Falling Large Raindrops and Halo: Karakasa Surprising Flash rack up +1.00 Spirit P, assuming she is fully Awakened. Her Last Word, One-Eyed Dragon of Mt. Tado, boosts both Yin DEF and Agility by 3 Stages (1T), regardless of Awakening level, and while Kogasa isn’t going to be known for Defense or Agility, these accumulated buffs of both are still handy for both her Hard and Slice Scaling, especially in 2 of her Last Word’s bullet lines at 100%. Overall, a very selfish unit as the above shows the lack of team support Kogasa has.

The Hard and Slice scalings for Kogasa's attacks are as follows:

Dripping Umbrella:
Slice: 0%/0%/25%/0%/25%/0%

Instant Water-Shedding:
Hard: 0%/0%/0%/25%/0%/25%

Umbrella Sign: Lightly Falling Large Raindrops:
Slice: 25%/0%/0%/25%/0%/0%
Hard: 0%/25%/0%/0%/0%/25%

Halo: Karakasa Surprising Flash:
Hard: 25%/0%/0%/0%/25%/0%
Slice: 0%/0%/25%/0%/0%/25%

One-Eyed Dragon of Mt. Tado:
Slice: 0%/100%/100%/0%/0%/0%
Hard: 0%/100%/100%/0%/0%/0%

Story Card Recommendations

(Card recommendations last updated on April 30, 2023)

Spell Card

As a more Yin oriented unit, Kogasa will benefit from boosting her own Yin ATK, she will enjoy cards like Boo! that boosts just that. Even though Kogasa’s Spirit P Boost powers come from her Spell Card Pre-ATKs instead of her Skills, that doesn’t negate the benefit cards like The Witch of Scarlet Dreams and Midnight Tea will provide, especially since Kogasa’s Spell Cards and Last Words aren’t exactly frontloaded, due to their respective boosts of +1.50 and +2.00 Spirit P.

Last Word

This is easily the best pick for Kogasa’s Last Word, due to having an All-Energy LW, as well as All-Yin. To be specific, Unknown Barrier Team boosts Energy Bullets by +50% and Yin ATK by +2 Stages, all for that one turn. If you currently do not have any access to this card, there are other valid alternatives, like Where The Wind Priestess Is with its +35% Energy Boost, or even something like a simple Yin ATK booster like Overwhelming Firepower.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

Kogasa’s third Skill, White Fox Protection, is the best one to level up first, as its effect to boost Yin ATK is the most important buff for Kogasa. The Yang ATK part of the skill isn’t something to worry about in terms of her Last Word damage, but the Yin buff makes this the best to priroitize. Next up could honestly go either way as these other 2 Skills are similar in the sense that they are both as equally beneficial as each other (Level 1 and Level 10). With Skill 1, Storm Skipping, being the Agility booster and Skill 2, Rain Forecast, as the Yin DEF booster, and with their anomaly inflictions on Kogasa (Paralyze and Blind respectively) being unchanged regardless of Skill Level, there is hardly anything in it when it comes to choosing one over the other.

Character Strengths

+ Great Accessibility to Water Breaks including P0 Water on Spread Shot
+ Potential to break both Paralyze and Blind Anomalies of an Enemy via P0 Last Word.
+ Spirit P gain on both Spell Cards can be helpful

Character Weaknesses

- Overall lacking a place in modern teams
- Struggles to make much use of self-inflicted anomalies on her own
- Killers are almost not present at all
- No team support
