Photochemical Smog
Expand
Photochemical Smog (a Touhou LW original) refers to a phenomenon that occurs when UV light from the sun reacts with pollutants in the air, creating a health hazard. This temperament causes harm to those surrounding it just by existing, which is just like Medicine, even if it is not her intention. Medicine is endowed with Wood Phase, from her kind desire to help her friends, and Sun Essence, as she continuously demands for rights for dolls, acting as a doll mediator.

The strong and kind Wood Phase resists Water Phase, because water nourishes wood, but it is weak to Metal Phase, because metal carves wood.

The alluring and arrogant Sun Essence resists the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence, but it is weak to the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence.

Character Shots

Medicine Melancholy's Spread Shot (a Touhou LW original). Medicine created the shot using knowledge from Eirin. While Medicine is not so naive as to hate every human she sees anymore, if her target is human, she might put a little more poison than usual into her shots...

Medicine Melancholy's Last Word (a Touhou LW original). She recreates the field of lilies of the valley from Nameless Hill and then hurls out poison with the force of an avalanche in this powerful attack. The idea for the Spell Card came from an accident that occurred when Medicine was taking a stroll on Nameless Hill. The Flower Master who also witnessed the accident has also given the attack her stamp of approval.

Character Ability

Capable of manipulating poison
Expand
This ability is practically Medicine's identity, since she is a poison doll. She can manipulate poison freely, and not just lily-of-the-valley poison. From plant poison to animal venom to toxic drugs, she can control any and all poison and use it to make humans go mad. She is still young as a youkai, so she uses her powers rather indiscriminately, but she has not used them for any truly nefarious purposes yet. Since Eirin is knowledgeable about poison and medicine, she is a good match for Medicine's ability. Apparently, Medicine's ability to move as a doll is also an effect of the poison.
When attacked with Barrier Status: Poison, inflicts 1 layer of the same Barrier Status to target.
When using Graze, own Agility 1 level UP (1 turn).

Character Analysis

Medicine Melancholy was released on May 11th, 2021 as part of the starting roster. For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Discord Official Discord Server.

Once a normal doll, Medicine Melancholy was discarded some number of years ago upon the Nameless Hill, surrounded by lily-of-the-valley flowers. Over the years, she became a youkai, who now wishes for the liberation of dolls from humans. Outside of this general disdain for humanity, she has the ability to manipulate poison, thanks to her years of proximity to lily-of-the-valley, which are poisonous. Due to how young she is as a youkai, she does not quite know how to hold back, making her a terrifying foe indeed.

Farming wise, Medicine is unique in that she can Full Break any event stage by herself on the very first hit of her Last Word, allowing her to effectively get 10 DEF DOWN against any stage - though practically speaking she prefers Solo stages, as she has a small but non-negligible chance to fail to Poison all foes in multi-target situations, and her need for three turns (to get both Spirit Power and Accuracy) leaves her too vulnerable to multi-target fights. This is somewhat compromised by her mixed Last Word meaning ATK UP only goes so far for her, alongside her extraordinarily low base ATK values, but it can sometimes let her get the job done. She's also a fantastic option for farming Chapter 2 Act 2's Story Card.
Solo Stage Farms: 2-7-1

For harder fights, Medicine is the undisputed queen of Barrier Breaks. Due to the nature of Barrier Anomality breaks, she doesn’t care about Element like most – so long as the enemy isn’t immune to Poison, which is a very small minority of units, she can inflict a ton of Breaks thanks to her All Last Word, Return of Happiness, which has Toxic at merely P0. Unlike Element Breaks, which can only break 1 Barrier per Bullet line, Anomaly Breaks such as Toxic will break all Barriers with the corresponding Anomaly on them. To compliment this, her Skills and Spell Cards apply many layers of Poison onto enemies.

To put it into perspective how much Poison Medicine can apply, without relying on luck: she can Break from 3 to 5 Barriers on one foe, or 1 to 3 to multiple foes. If you’re willing to retry a fight a few times, she can even break up to 8 Barriers on one foe, or 6 on multiple foes – enough to Full Break most enemies immediately! If that’s not enough, she has pretty good access to Wood Element attacks. If you're truly desperate, she even has a single Earth Break at P3 on her second shot, Black Bile.

Medicine is somewhat lacking outside of this, having low damage and no other buffs or debuffs for her team. But her ability to Full Break entire enemy teams single-handedly is enough to make her a devastatingly strong unit in strong fights anyway, thanks to the sheer power of Full Break.

Overall, Medicine is an extremely powerful Friend. You won’t get a ton of use for her in Events, but when it comes to farming the Chapter 1 Boss and Breaking foes in hard fights, she’s second to none. Just make sure not to inhale the poison, she doesn’t know how to hold back.

Here are the chances for Medicine’s secondary effects:

Story Card Recommendations

(Card recommendations last updated on October 31, 2022)

Spell Card

First and foremost, Medicine needs Spirit Power - the extra base Bullets provide her with too much damage to pass up. Next, Accuracy UP cards will be vital as she does not have innate sources of it, not to mention that this will allow her to cause consistent damage. Finally, giving her YIN ATK UP cards will allow her Last Word have better damage output.

Last Word

If Medicine is being used to break Poison anomaly barriers, and didn't get Accuracy from her Spell Cards, feel free to give her Accuracy UP (notably Froggy Hat for the extra Liquid DMG UP it grants). Otherwise, you may consider going for Overwhelming Firepower to further increase her damage output.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

Poison Mist and Toxic Touch are of equal importance for Medicine, though Toxic Touch is slightly more useful to rush as it lets her farm Solo stages sooner. Hallucinatory Poison is practically worthless, and can be saved for when she has a Fantasy Rebirth.

Character Strengths

+ Wonderful Poison breaker, practically able to break almost any opponent
+ Quick farmer for early game content
+ Poison anomalies can serve as Yang support

Character Weaknesses

- Useless against enemies immune to Poison, which are rare
- Below average elemental breaks
- Low Damage
