Goraikou
Expand
Goraikou (a Touhou LW original) refers to a sunrise seen from a place up high, such as from atop a mountain. This is an apt temperament for Miko, who was an advocate for Buddhism in public while following Taoism privately. Miko is endowed with Water Phase, as she is sharp-eared and amiable, and Sun Essence, with her ability to bring the people together.

The flexible and patient Water Phase resists Metal Phase, because metal collects water, but it is weak to Earth Phase, because earth directs water.

The alluring and arrogant Sun Essence resists the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence, but it is weak to the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence.

There is an old book that is incredibly popular among the western world that named Japan, Cipangu and described it as a legendary country with vast resources of gold. The information on Japan was apparently based on tales heard in China and is reminiscent of legends concerning an island of immortals that is said to be far to the east.

Toyosatomimi no Miko's Spell Card. She shoots out seventeen lasers and countless ofuda bullets, probably inspired by ancient Japan's Seventeen-Article Constitution. This document was heavily influenced by Confucian philosophy from China and also took ideas from Legalism and Buddhism. The understanding and acceptance of the latest philosophies of the time shown in this document hint at Miko's incredible ability to adapt and innovate. However, perhaps the constitution was only put into effect thanks to Seiga's advice.

Toyosatomimi no Miko's Spell Card. She unleashes bullets of light, reminiscent of the halo behind the Guze Kannon statue. Prince Shoutoku founded the famous Houryuu Temple in Nara, and the statue of the bodhisattva Guanyin (known as Kannon in Japan) within the Hall of Dreams supposedly represents the prince and is held as a sacred treasure. There is a famous legend regarding the prince's birth, where the prince is conceived by Guanyin entering his mother's, Princess Anahobe no Hashihito's, mouth... This tale, along with the legend about Prince Shoutoku being born in front of a stable door, might be embellishments of the truth that Miko purposefully propagated.

Toyosatomimi no Miko's Last Word. She displays her leadership and authority with a blade of blinding light. This name comes from the third article of the Seventeen-Article Constitution, which deals with the relationship between the sovereign and their subjects. The article can be interpreted to mean that all orders from the sovereign must be obeyed without question. Miko is not just an intelligent and wise ruler but also listens to the voices of many and possesses extraordinary foresight, so perhaps this political system would create the most prosperous nation... Or perhaps this article stems from Miko's boundless conviction that wisdom and talent are merely the means to form an unyielding authority.

Character Ability

Capable of listening to ten people's conversations at the same time
Expand
The ability of Toyosatomimi no Miko takes after the legends of the famous Prince Shoutoku. Not only can she listen to and comprehend ten people speaking to her simultaneously (the literal meaning of this ability) but can also perceive their disposition by listening to each of their ten desires all at the same time. Apparently, this also allows her to see the past and the future. However, her predictions are more likely to err when someone lacks one or more of these ten desires. It seems that in order to see the past or future from the ten desires, she must listen to all ten at once. She must process them simultaneously, not one after the other. This is because the speaker's thoughts and emotions that they put into their words will change over time if their desires are heard sequentially. Perhaps the true strength of this ability is that it allows Miko to observe and perceive someone with next to no interference or contact with them. Desire spirits, also known as "little divine spirits," are apparently born from the wishes and prayers... the desires of people. It is not known whether these are the desires of the living or released when someone passes away. From all the information available, it seems that both theories are plausible. This means that desire spirits may be spirits of the dead or spirits of the living. It is not all that unusual to mistake desire spirits for phantoms of the dead; in fact, they may even be a type or subspecies of phantom. Also, since phantoms, ghosts, and the like can ascend to divine spirits by gathering faith, calling desire spirits "little divine spirits" may not be so far off the mark. In a particular incident, Miko was seen accepting (or perhaps absorbing) desire spirits into herself and becoming one with them, which may be an example of the process that mere souls take when ascending to divine spirits. And perhaps this is also a primordial example of syncretism between faiths.

Character Analysis

Toyosatomimi no Miko was released on January 14th, 2022 in "Festival Prayer: Listener of the Rising Sun." She was initially a Festival on release and later added to the general pool. For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Discord Official Discord Server.

Toyosatomimi no Miko, Shoutoku Taoist, is the historical Prince Shoutoku. From a young age, they decided that dying was simply unacceptable - they had things to do, people to rule, and why should they be stopped by death for simply being a human? Thus, the Crown Prince was approached by a hermit by the name of Seiga Kaku, whom granted them immortality (with the nice bonus perk of a body of their choosing) via taoism. Unfortunately their plans backfired, and Miko wound up slumbering within the earth, sealed away for hundreds of years until finally reawakening during the events of Ten Desires. Immediately she attempted to broach the subject of leading the humans of Gensokyo, but seeing as how that’s not an option, she’ll instead lead your roster.

As far as farming goes, Miko is a solid option for Solo stages, due to her highly potent damage on turn 1, or for 2 turn potential if you prefer to keep her at a lower cost.

For harder fights, Miko’s primary worth is still in her Solo targeting Last Word, Heed the Commands with Absolute Care. Thanks to its 50%/0%/0%/0%/70%/70% Agility and 0%/0%/0%/0%/0%/80% Hard scaling, 1-1-3 Layout, combined with the Crown Prince granting herself 2 Spirit Power UP on the very first turn thanks to Tatsuta Protection, she can easily deal a good amount of damage in one or two turns to a priority target. Additionally, Tsunashiki Shaku grants her Charge to make her easier to support, though the Yin ATK UP goes mostly to waste. Finally, she packs some solid Break potential: Influence of the East grants her a All targeting Sun Break 0P option which she can repeat indefinitely, Discernment: Laser of Seventeen Articles is a decent 2 Sun and 2 Metal All targeting Breaks for 3 Spirit Power, and Light Sign: Halo of the Guze Kannon is a average 1/2/2/3 All targeting Sun Breaks for 0/1/2/3 Spirit Power.

Outside of this, Miko’s other notable attribute is the 2 levels of Accuracy UP (2T) on Light Sign: Halo of the Guze Kannon, which can grant her party a solid amount of extra damage in the Arena or as Accuracy support for the Tower. Likewise, the 2 levels of Yin ATK UP (2T) that Discernment: Laser of Seventeen Articles bestows upon her team can be helpful for the multi-wave Arena, but is generally lackluster for the Tower or EXTRA stages, where most attackers can easily bring themselves up to high or max levels of ATK UP - it also unfortunately does nothing for Miko herself, who is a predominately Yang attacker.

Her Hard and Slice scaling is as follows:

Influence of the East:
Hard: 0%/15%/0%/0%/0%/0%

Cipangu the Golden Sword:
Slice: 15%/0%/0%/0%/0%/0%

Light Sign: Halo of the Guze Kannon:
Hard: 0%/0%/30%/30%/0%/0%

Heed the Commands with Absolute Care:
Slice: 50%/0%/0%/0%/70%/70%

Hard: 0%/0%/0%/0%/0%/80%

Story Card Recommendations

(Card recommendations last updated on May 15, 2023)

Spell Card

Any Yang ATK Story Card like Ordinary Magician will help a ton for Miko, especially with its Laser Boost effect helping her Spell Card 1. In addition, given how the bulk of Miko's Spell Cards are locked behind 3P, you'll definitely want to account for Spirit Power cards like the conventional ones like The Witch of Scarlet Dreams and Dancer in the Puddle. You can however spice things up with Mountain of Faith and Myouren Temple Anniversary if possible, with the latter giving the team more Spirit Power, weakening a target's Yang DEF and slightly increasing Metal bullets too. Finally, cards like Little Sister and Sweets and Puppeteer and Necromancer will be able to bring out the damage in Miko's Spell Cards 1 and 2 respectively.

Last Word

When it comes to what is best fit for royalty, while they are close, it's actually not Mysterious Sword Master or The Moon and Izayoi despite their 50% boosts, but rather Disillusion being crowned as the winner here, thanks to its mix of Metal and Slash boosting going up to 95%, benefiting lines 1, 2 & 5.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

Tatsuta Protection grants Miko the highest damage boost in her kit by far, due to her Last Word's 1-1-3 Layout, and as such should be prioritized first. Afterwards, Shoutoku's Swords should be raised, thanks to the additional Yang ATK UP (the extra Accuracy is typically overkill, thanks to her Character Ability). Finally, Tsunashiki Shaku's Charge is available from the first level, and the odd decision to make it a Yin ATK UP skill on a Yang attacker means Miko does not benefit from additional levels in it, and as such it can be saved until she gets a Fantasy Rebirth.

Character Strengths

+Great burst damage to singular targets
+P0 All targeting Sun on a Basic Shot
+Self Charge makes her easy to support
+Decent amount of teamwide Accuracy and Yin ATK support

Character Weaknesses

-Can't hit as hard as the highest tier of attackers, and her support doesn't make up for that
-Yin ATK support isn't particularly helpful with top tier attackers outside of the Arena, and Miko doesn't benefit from it herself
