Kousai
Expand
Kousai (a Touhou LW original) refers to a plague of locusts. It seems a fitting temperament for Wriggle, seeing as she's an insect youkai capable of manipulating insects. She's endowed with Fire Phase, because she likes summer, and Star Essence, since she can produce light.

The formless and passionate Fire Phase resists Wood Phase, because wood feeds fire, but it is weak to Water Phase, because water dampens fire.

The diverse and uncooperative Star Essence resists the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence, but it is weak to the charming and arrogant Sun Essence.

Character Shots

Wriggle Nightbug's Spread Shot (a Touhou LW original). She attacks by emitting beams of light that act as signals. It's said fireflies developed bioluminescence as a way to warn away predators, however, in reality, not all fireflies light up. The ones that do, though, are believed to shine as eggs, larvae, and pupae. In other words, throughout their entire life cycle.

Wriggle Nightbug's Focus Shot (a Touhou LW original). She attacks with her surprisingly powerful legs. Insects' legs are extremely strong, especially grasshoppers, who can jump many times their height with ease. But even they're no match for fleas, who jump several dozen times their height. If only humans could jump that high...

Wriggle Nightbug's Spell Card. Lots of fireflies all light up at once in this attack. This spectacle is reminiscent of how firefly larvae burst out from their eggs. Both larva and egg produce a beautiful glow, but to think that glow comes from insects... One shudders at the thought.

Wriggle Nightbug's Spell Card. Giant fireflies emit bright orbs of light. This attack probably was inspired by giant fireflies like the genji-botaru. But even then, these fireflies might be a little too big... Or at least, that's what one reporter wrote in her article. Fireflies that shine really are like stars on Earth.

Wriggle Nightbug's Last Word. A typhoon howls through a long autumn night. ''Does the flap of a butterfly's wings set off a storm in a faraway land?'' So goes chaos theory's infamous Butterfly Effect, but for this attack, Wriggle Nightbug turns that theory into reality by forcing butterflies to flap, which is only possible because she can manipulate insects. Get in the way of this storm, and there's no way you'll survive. Underestimate insects at your own peril...

Character Ability

Capable of manipulating insects
Expand
Wriggle Nightbug's ability as an insect youkai. She's able to freely control insects who gather and await her orders. It's said insects like the firefly avoid being caught thanks to their beauty and are thus highly likely to live for a long time. In doing so, even regular insects eventually become insect youkai. It must be noted that insect youkai are not particularly strong, although it's possible that they were stronger in the past. Humans should still be careful not to underestimate insects unless they want to become their next meal. An army of ants can even defeat an elephant.

In a time gone by, youkai with insect-like appearances were common. Back then, insects posed a far greater threat to crops and human life than they do today. Many stories of dangerous bug youkai have been passed down the generations, such as the oomukade (giant centipedes) that terrorized even dragons and tsuchigumo that plagued youkai hunters with fevers.

Many Japanese kanji characters pertaining to dragons contain the kanji radical for ''mushi,'' which means ''bug,'' ''insect,'' ''worm,'' or any other creepy-crawly. Perhaps in that time, it was more natural to envision an insect when thinking about a terrifying youkai. ''Mushi'' was also a more complicated and far-reaching classification than it is today. It stretched beyond common insects, arachnids, and centipedes to include invertebrates and reptiles. Even systems related to human cognitive functions were no exception.

This led to the complex system of two separate Japanese kanji characters that share the same reading, ''mushi.'' However, as time went by, the simpler of the two symbols came to represent common insects, arachnids, and centipedes, among certain others. Creatures with supposed mystical natures came to be categorized by biologists and entered the realm of the mundane. With advances in science, insecticides and pesticides spread, and the threat insects posed to humans diminished.

Whether Wriggle wishes for the insect youkai to return to their former glory is unclear, but she is not the only one living in Gensokyo. There may even be an insect god. Perhaps the day when the insects regain their strength and swarm down on humans is not so far away...
When inflicted by Barrier Status Poison or Blind, inflicts the same Barrier Status to target.
When using Graze, own Accuracy 1 level UP (1 turn).

Character Analysis

Wriggle Nightbug was released on December 2, 2022 in "Prayer: Friendly Firefly." For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Discord Official Discord Server.

See those blinking lights among the fields and trees at night? There may be a youkai among them. Wriggle Nightbug was first introduced to the world during the Eternal Night incident, where she can be found flitting around during the extended hour of darkness. Her ability to manipulate insects manifests in a Debuff-Class Friend who inflicts various anomalies on her enemies to sow chaos among their ranks. Wriggle is a reminder to friend and foe alike that even bugs can shine among the stars in your lineup.

As an Offensive Support

  • Buffs team Agility for Slicing support
  • Debuffs enemy Yin DEF, EVASION and Crit EVASION
  • Debuffs enemy Yang ATK and DEF via Poison from Last Word
  • Inflicts Quick on herself via Skill 2 to ensure her Spell Card debuffs go first

As a Utility

  • Inflicts Poison and Burn with Spell Cards
  • Nullifies Poison and Blind, reflecting it back onto units that inflict it upon her
  • Can break Poison, Burn and Blind anomalies with Shots and Spell Cards

As an Attacker

  • Bullet lines feature Star and Fire breaks, skewing slightly towards the former
  • Buffs Accuracy by Grazing
  • Minor self supply of Spirit P

As a Tank

  • Takes 25% less damage from Star bullets

Story Card Recommendations

(Card recommendations last updated on May 20, 2023)

Spell Card

Despite (Or perhaps, due to) generating constant energy to illuminate her surroundings, Wriggle is constantly in need of energy to fuel her various abilities. Mountain of Faith supports her needs best, providing 2 Spirit P while increasing Light Bullet damage by 30%. The Witch of Scarlet Dreams is an easy alternative, which players will be able to farm at their leisure. If you’re looking specifically to boost her Damage output, go with Puppeteer and Necromancer instead for a flat 50% boost to Light bullets.

Last Word

Redder Than Blood works great in Wriggle due to both increasing her Yin ATK while also boosting her Fire Bullets by 20%. If you already have a good source of Yin ATK elsewhere, look instead to Puppeteer and Necromancer for a flat 50% boost to Light Bullets.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

Start with Wriggle’s first skill, Jointed Appendages to help her and her team hit enemies with an Evasion debuff while boosting Slicing damage. Her second skill, Ladder-Like Nerves comes next to help her hit those important Spirit P levels and set up Spell Card debuffs with Quick. Finally, Compound and Ocelli inflicts Blind to a single target while reducing their Yin DEF by 2 levels, which can setup for both Anomaly breaking and nuking.

Character Strengths

Supports Yin teams via debuffs

Wriggle’s various debuffs to enemy Yin DEF, EVASION and Crit EVASION and buffs to team Agility helps Yin attackers shine, especially if their attacks feature Slicing bullets.

Anomalies are her playground

Wriggle inflicts Poison and Burn via Spell Cards, and can reflect Poison and Blind back at opponents. Her Shots and Spell Cards break Poison, Burn and Blind

Character Weaknesses

Lacks Spirit P generation to constantly hit her Anomaly breaks

Two out of three of Wriggle’s Anomaly breaks are locked behind her 3P Spread Shot and Focus Shot. With only one skill giving her 1P every 4 turns, she has to rely on support to hit those levels while maintaining her output each turn.
