Stories

Story 1
The Human Village is the place where humans live. It is thought that most of the humans residing in Gensokyo live here. The village is the most normal place for humans, and it exemplifies everyday life. However, to all the other beings in Gensokyo, this is the most peculiar place there is. The way people live in the village remains almost the same as it was during the early Meiji era. This might be because actively interacting with the outside world was not possible ever since the establishment of the Great Hakurei Barrier. But due to several reasons, there has been some cultural development. There are various theories about the size of the village, but the Human Village might actually be so large that it is incomparable to the usual concept of a quaint little village in the mountains. The magnificent gate to the village is reminiscent of the lost gate to Japan's former capital. The village is equipped with urban facilities such as canals and main streets, indicating a large population. A barrier encloses the village, so the descendants of the people living there would eventually die out entirely within a few generations if the community was too small. Thus, a sufficient number of people must be present to ensure that the community can continue to exist long-term. It is said that the population of ancient Kyoto immediately after the relocation of the capital was 100,000 people.
Story 2
Most of the humans in the Human Village live a mundane life. In other words, a life centered around an economy. The need to establish an economy brings the concept of a government into the picture. This would mean that there's probably a village head or a local government that manages the village. A variety of shops can be found lined up along the streets. In addition to the wide range of shops, there are restaurants and bars as well. And that's not all. The streets are also filled with several wholesalers, hawkers selling medicine and foodstuffs, and even puppet shows are held here. The village also has a school and a book rental shop, which indicates that the means for education and learning are well established. It is also quite common for religious leaders to hold religious activities at communal fireplaces or in the town square. The village seems to be a culturally rich place. The Hieda family is an old and prominent family in the village. The family has passed down the responsibility of recording Gensokyo's history from generation to generation. The head of the family is known as the Child of Miare. It is said that they are born with a mysterious ability and that they have a close relationship with the shrine.
Story 3
There are many places of interest around the Human Village. A canal continues outside the village, characterized by a line of willow trees that run alongside it. There are also vast fields on the outskirts of the village that feed the village's population. The water from the canal is probably used for irrigation. Myouren Temple is built right next to the village, and it is a place of worship for some of the villagers. The location, as well as the entrance to the Divine Spirit Mausoleum, is unknown, but it's probably near or inside the village. Hakurei Shrine and Moriya Shrine are far from the village, but not so far that they cannot be reached on foot. Some people visit the shrines when they hold festivals. Some humans leave the confines of the village for harvesting and fishing purposes. There are even a few people who seclude themselves on the Youkai Mountain. None of these activities are safe, but it is pretty normal for humans to undertake risks to achieve their goals. This is an example of how youkai attacks could take place. And at the same time, it also gives us a look into the state of mind of a youkai exterminator.
Story 4
Youkai exist in Gensokyo, but it is uncertain whether all the humans in the village understand this. There might be some who are unaware of the existence of youkai. Age and lifestyle also play a role in whether someone is aware of the existence of youkai or not. Also, the perception of different youkai probably differs depending on their nature and appearance. Youkai are most likely officially forbidden to enter the village. However, in reality, there have been cases where youkai have been given implicit permission to go in and out of the village. For example, there are food stalls run by youkai in the village at night. Apparently, there are also some youkai who disguise themselves as humans. It is possible that the humans who are close to these youkai might be aware of their true identity but choose to remain silent, actively conceal it, or simply treat them the same as humans by giving them an acceptable social standing. On the other hand, there are also youkai who hunt humans within the Human Village. They are very dangerous and usually exterminated by specialists. However, there don't seem to be many publicly known cases of human lives being endangered by youkai.
Story 5
There is a theory that the Human Village is controlled by someone. There is no doubt that some outsiders have settled in the Human Village. Since Gensokyo is a closed space, bringing in new cultures and new blood might be a good thing. But do these outsiders arrive there by coincidence alone? The world outside the Human Village is a whole different world ruled by youkai. Most youkai attack humans. It is in their nature to harm humans. It was supposedly something that the youkai needed to do to exist. So the wise thing to do was to gather all the humans in one place and keep an eye on them.
