Character Analysis
Hata no Kokoro was released on December 17th, 2021 in Cheering Squad.
Hata no Kokoro is a menreiki youkai who first appeared in Hopeless Masquerade as the main antagonist. As per the norm with menreiki youkai, Kokoro is incapable of displaying proper emotions, and instead displays them through the use of her many masks. Because of this, her face is completely devoid of emotion and never wavers past that. This isn’t to say she isn’t capable of having emotions, however, as she’s actually rather childish underneath the “mask” she wears. Each of the 66 masks that she has in her possession represent a different, powerful emotion. Should she lose one of these masks, she loses that emotion completely which could lead to problematic events as seen in Hopeless Masquerade. In Touhou LostWord, Kokoro plays the role of a healer as an A-Tier Friend. This could be, perhaps, due to her ability to make others feel emotions similar to the masks she has on, transferring over to “healing abilities” well.
As previously mentioned Hata no Kokoro is a healer and possesses a couple healing abilities within her kit, fittingly so. Including her second Spell Card Melancholy Mask: The Man of Qi Worries about the Earth, Kokoro actually has upwards to 4 different party wide heals all ranging from 30%-40% of the party’s health. This alone makes her pretty useful to have in challenges such as Scarlet Devil Tower. Unlike many healers, though, Kokoro is actually quite good outside of healing. Kokoro’s kit revolves around Yin ATK almost entirely, which is incredibly helpful because she doesn’t have to worry about having mixed damage. Not only does her second Spell Card have solid healing capabilities, it can also remove barrier abnormalities in a pinch. Kokoro also packs quite a punch with her solo-targeting Last Word, Dance of the Empty-Hearted Masks - Noh of Darkness, which has the added benefit of buffing her own Yin ATK by 3 levels before sending out the attack. In addition to being a healer and a competent damage dealer, Kokoro is an extremely potent Earth breaker, having a grand total of 12 Earth breaks in total, with her Focus Shot even having a P0 Break by itself. In conclusion, Kokoro is a unit who performs well in many different situations, making building her a well-rounded choice.
Story Card Recommendations
(Card recommendations last updated on May 15, 2023)
Spell Card
Spirit Power is never a bad thing, and in Kokoro's case, the same applies with buffing Yin ATK, Accuracy or CRIT ATK (if her Killers land), so cards like Overwhelming Firepower or Rainbow Dragon Cave work well when it comes to this, but New Year's Shrine Visit Vi keeps her Yin ATK buffs lasting that extra turn longer, allowing for flexibility in both Yin ATK and CRIT ATK. If you want though, Mansion of Memories has versatile usage for Kokoro, especially with her Spell Card 2, getting a little Energy buff in while also providing Yin ATK support. Accuracy will help Kokoro too since she doesn't have ways to get it by herself, so you can use cards like Valued Tools of the Trade, or even pass it all around the team with Ability Cards?.
Finally, if you need to keep up the Spirit Power, use cards like The Witch of Scarlet Dreams, Midnight Tea and Youkai Mountain Anniversary, the last one also providing a little more benefit to her Spell Card 1 due to the Body Bullet boost. With that said, if you want, you could go with cards that boost Body and Energy for either Spell Card, but conveniently enough, Choose an Animal Spirit can be used as a 50% boost for both, and with 3 Barriers on top of that, this Card stands out a bit in terms of this particular scenario.
Last Word
With Slash as part of Kokoro’s Last Word, The Moon and Izayoi and Mysterious Sword Master are hands down the best choices due to her already having her Yin ATK raised, thus more incentive to take advantage of either’s 50% Slash boost. As for which one trumps the other, it seems that Mysterious Sword Master actually takes 2nd place here (assuming her Accuracy is covered in advance). This is because The Moon and Izayoi also boosts Star by 40%, and while Kokoro has more Earth than Star, the 2 bullet lines containing Star make the difference here. Either way, you can’t go wrong here in terms of which one you choose for the masked menreiki.
Character Skill Level Up Recommendations
You’re going to want to prioritize her healing skills first equally, starting with Douji Mask. After the aforementioned skill and Oobeshimi Mask are maxed, Shinja Mask is your last focus.
