Character Analysis
Hong Meiling (Scarlet) was released on March 24, 2023 in "Festival Prayer: Gatekeeper of the Scarlet Night." For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Official Discord Server.
There exists a world where a certain Chinese Gatekeeper stands guard before her mistress’s mansion, power welling within her from the effects of the Scarlet Mist. Story Card Recommendations
(Card recommendations last updated on April 30, 2023)
Spell Card
Unknown Barrier Team helps supplement her lack of Yin ATK buffs while providing her 50% more damage to Spell Card 2. Nameless Adventurers works best on Spell Card 1, boosting its output by 50%. Should you find yourself needing an additional burst of energy, Post-Training Kinako Milk provides her 1.25 Spirit P while increasing her Agility by 2 levels, as well as acting as a decent Yin stat stick.
Last Word
A fully upgraded NAЯAKA would provide Meiling a huge source of damage, boosting overall output by 50% and Fire damage by 40% all at once. Unknown Barrier Team and Choose An Animal Spirit are fine substitutes however, with both boosting her Last Word damage by 50%. The former provides her several levels of Yin ATK while the latter gives 3 layers of Barriers to use for prolonged fights where she may need to continue providing buffs to her team while staying alive. Finally, Worlds in Hand gives her a modest 30% to Energy bullets while boosting her Fire output by 25%, on top of some Crit ATK buffs to help her hit a little harder.
Character Skill Level Up Recommendations
Skill 2 (Middle Dantian) and Skill 3 (Lower Dantian) are good choices to focus on, as they provide a combined 1.5 Spirit P that she can use from the get go, while providing her party a solid defense against certain Elements. Skill 1, Upper Dantian will give her team Agility and Accuracy boosts, giving them the boost they need to ramp up their damage against enemies. In a pinch though, she can also use Boosts and Grazes to provide these benefits.
Character Strengths
Great Wall of China
Meiling has multiple ways of reducing damage, from skills that reduce Wood and Star element bullets by 45% to passives to allow her to take 25% less damage from Humans. She also provides party Barrier recovery through her Spell Card 2.
Swift as a Coursing River
While Meiling works best with Yin teams, she is especially good at ramping up Agility buffs for her Friends. With the right Story Card load out, she can cap team Agility in a single turn, combining buffs from her Last Word, Skill 1 and Grazing, all of which provide Agility.
Character Weaknesses
A Lack of Focus
While Meiling has many ways of reducing damage to herself, she is unable to draw enemy fire as she lacks Focus buffs. Make sure your Friends don’t neglect to graze, especially when not covered by her protective buffs.
A Lack of Damage Potential
While she excels in providing Agility buffs, she is unable to capitalise on them very well, with low Agility scaling on her attacks. She makes up for this with bonus damage from effective Elements, but this is somewhat stymied by her somewhat rainbow coloured bullet lines. Furthermore, she lacks Yin ATK buffs to reach the upper limits of her damage, requiring help from Friends or Story Cards to do so.
