Akizuki (a Touhou LW original) refers to the full moon in mid-autumn. The word is also used as a metaphor for things that are beautiful all year round. An apt temperament for Mamizou as bake-danuki are said to be most active on autumn nights lit by a full moon. Mamizou is endowed with Earth Phase, as she easily adapts to new neighborhoods, and Moon Essence, as she loves to surprise people.

The encompassing and regenerative Earth Phase resists Fire Phase, because fire produces earth, but it is weak to Wood Phase, because wood parts earth.

The cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence resists the alluring and arrogant Sun Essence, but it is weak to the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence.

Youkai Karakasa Transformation

Mamizou Futatsuiwa's Spread Shot. She commands her tanuki underlings to transform into karakasa-obake and tackle her target. Mamizou's underlings are so skilled that they look identical to the original... apart from their tails. Karakasa-obake (umbrella tsukumogami often depicted with one eye, a long tongue, and a single foot wearing a geta) can sometimes be seen around the Human Village, so perhaps they modeled their transformations on one of them.

Youkai Tsurube Transformation

Mamizou Futatsuiwa's Focus Shot. She commands her tanuki underling to transform into a tsurube-otoshi and tackle her target. Mamizou's underling is so skilled that it looks like a mirror-image of the original... though its tail is showing. It's said that tsurube-otoshi (strange youkai who drop down onto humans) can be found in the Underworld, but would tanuki really go to such lengths just to copy one's appearance?

Belly-Drumming of Infinitely Infinite Tanuki

Mamizou Futatsuiwa's Last Word. She charges into her targets with all her eight hundred and eight tanuki underlings (the word for eight hundred also means an infinite number in Japanese), who then transform into bombs and explode (or at least, it looks like they explode). Mamizou is clearly not your average bake-danuki, as her horde of underlings rivals even the legendary Inugami Gyoubu, and her artistry and expertise in surprising people put the great tanuki of Shoujouji to shame. While she herself is humble in regards to the extent of her power, it would be foolish to underestimate her.

Mamizou Futatsuiwa makes use of this versatile ability in her day-to-day life as well as in battles of bullets. The ability to transform anything into anything else is most fitting for a bake-danuki. Mamizou's ability is highly adaptable and can be applied to a whole range of situations. She is known to appear in and around the Human Village disguised as a human, but this disguise is probably a result of her using this shapeshifting ability on herself. She can even transform into inanimate objects like a bonfire. She also cleverly uses this ability in battles of bullets, like how she transforms leaves into light bullets to form odd patterns and shapeshifts herself into other people to copy their attacks. Mamizou can even use her Spell Cards to forcefully transform others... The first youkai that comes to mind when you consider Mamiozou's friends in Gensokyo would probably be Nue Houjuu. Their abilities are quite similar, so it is no wonder that they get along so well.

Character Analysis

Mamizou Futatsuiwa was released on November 26th, 2021 in Festival: Bosses of Strength and Subtlety.

Unlike the other youkai that live inside Gensokyo, Mamizou Futatsuiwa originally came from the Outside World, specifically Sado. Where she previously lived among humans and fellow bake-danuki (the youkai-form of tanuki), she now found herself as the leader of the bake-danuki within Gensokyo in a world where humans and youkai live separately. This doesn’t stop her from regularly visiting the Human Village by using her abilities to disguise herself as another human. She is kind-hearted toward the unfortunate and carries the look and accent of an old woman, but never be fooled. Mamizou is still a very powerful youkai, and the ability to change the appearance of herself or others is the perfect tool for deception and manipulation. While fighting by your side, her bake-danuki tricks and attacks make her a good-willed B Tier Friend.

Mamizou certainly can farm for you - if you give her two turns to make the most of her back loaded Last Word, Belly-Drumming of Infinitely Infinite Tanuki which hits for an impressive amount when given a turn to first gain Spirit Power. What, have you ever seen a good belly drum that didn't take a turn to get going? I didn't think so.

Harder fights is where Mamizou begins to show off her utility. As a Defense-focused Friend, she can boost her Yin DEF by a total of 8 levels, summed up from 3 levels UP by her Last Word, an additional 3 levels UP given to the entire party by her second skill, Leaf Disguise, and 2 more levels to the party from Tanuki Boss of Sado. While many other Friends would have little purpose to remain in battle after using their Last Word and losing all of their spell cards, Mamizou’s Spread shot is one Earth break at 0 Spirit Power, making it an ideal choice for spamming an Earth-weak opponent. She also ensures the attacks are kept on her with 3 levels of Focus UP from her spell cards Fifth Duel: Scrolls of Frolicking Animals and Humans are Nice! along with 5 more levels from her first skill, Myriad Transformations. Due to the reworking of the Focus mechanic, more Focus will mean Mamizou will take more damage from All-targeting attacks while her teammates will take less, which helps them survive at the cost of her own health. At the very least, she can heal off the damage thrown at her with Tanuki Boss of Sado healing 30% of her HP and her first characteristic, Hungry Racoon, having a 50% chance of healing 15% of her HP at the start of each turn.

A defensive tank that keeps the attention on her while keeping the evasion up may sound impressive, but Mamizou lacks two major aspects that hurt her tanking capabilities: Yang DEF and barrier restoration. She has no abilities to defend herself from Yang attacks, making Yang-focused enemies very inconvenient for her. Not only does no barrier restoration make it a struggle to defend attacks Mamizou is weak to, she will also lack a way to get barriers back to avoid greater damage from All-targeting attacks. Still, she excels in Yin DEF and ensures the pressure remains on her and makes for a very serviceable defense unit. Leave the defensive line to her, and she is sure to come out on top with her tanuki friends.

Mamizou heavily requires Spirit Power story cards to get more damage and breaks out of her spell cards and Last Word. Outside of that, you can look for Yin ATK UP cards and other Yin ATK stat sticks to increase the final damage of her Last Word.

Overwhelming Firepower acts as both a stat stick for Yin ATK and an additional 2 levels UP for Yin ATK, which is most ideal for Mamizou’s Yin-only Last Word.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

Tanuki Boss of Sado will do the most to benefit Mamizou’s attack and defense capabilities along with providing a defensive buff to everyone else, making it the first skill to prioritize. Leaf Disguise can be looked into next to further support the team’s Yin DEF from only 1 level at Level 1 to 3 levels at Level 10. The buffs from Myriad Transformations can come in handy sometimes, seeing how the skill increases Accuracy by 2 levels instead of 1 at Level 10, but remember the risks of further boosting Focus when leveling up this skill.
