Hoshi-Oboro

Hoshi-Oboro (a Touhou LW original) refers to stars that appear to twinkle due to the warm spring air. This is an apt temperament for Megumu, as she often looks up at the stars. The Great Tengu lives atop the Youkai Mountain and appears to be heavily affected by the three Essences, all of which derive from the sky. Her abandonment of the five Phases may relate to her practice of Shugendou. She's endowed with Sun Essence, representing Vairocana, and Star Essence, representing Acala.

The alluring and arrogant Sun Essence resists the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence, but it is weak to the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence.

The diverse and uncooperative Star Essence resists the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence, but it is weak to the charming and arrogant Sun Essence.

The combination of Sun Essence and Star Essence cancels out any resistance or weakness to Moon Essence.

Character Shots

Megumu Iizunamaru's Spread Shot (a Touhou LW original). She attacks by unleashing the night sky's stars. There is no official record of any Great Tengu Constellation, but it seems there are whispers of other youkai-inspired constellations. Those rumors were surely started by a youkai, but whoever could it have been?

Megumu Iizunamaru's Focus Shot (a Touhou LW original). She attacks ferociously with her beloved tripod. It appears to be her own form of correctional punishment, but it's not clear who she uses it on or when. The Yatagarasu is an envoy of the sun goddess, Amaterasu. It has three legs and some connection to tengu.

Megumu Iizunamaru's Spell Card. She attacks with a dazzling display of colored lights. If you observe the night sky in detail, you'll see that stars shine in a variety of colors. It's common knowledge that hot stars shine blue and cooler stars shine red, but that's not always the case. Stars moving toward Earth appear bluer, and those moving away appear redder.

Megumu Iizunamaru's Spell Card. She attacks with lights that shine like luminous horses traversing the sky. It was once thought that objects in the night sky were each different and that there was no order to be found. However, since the advent of science, humans have discovered different laws that govern objects like stars, planets, comets, and shooting stars. Celestial bodies are not in fact gods that reside in the sky, but mere ''things'' akin to apples and rocks on Earth. And yet, humans continue to look up at the night sky and make wishes.

Megumu Iizunamaru's Last Word. She attacks with the power of a Great Tengu who came across the sea from China. It is said that Iizuna Gongen's mantra can release this cursed power. The belief system of Iizuna Shugen was formed over time by many pilgrims. It seems reasonable to assume this mantra lies at the heart of that system.

Character Ability

Capable of manipulating the starry sky
Expand
Megumu Iizunamaru's ability as a Great Tengu bearing Iizuna's name. While being able to manipulate the starry sky may sound rather exaggerated, it's thought that her station as a Great Tengu does actually have a strong connection to the stars.

Megumu is one of the chiefs of the tengu society that rules the Youkai Mountain. She is also partly responsible for the mountain's economy. However, as a Great Tengu with Iizuna in her name, it seems safe to say she has a deep connection to the old Iizuna faith. The foundation of said faith originated from faith in mountains. From there, this faith was conflated with the faiths in Acala, Dakiniten, Ksitigarbha, Karuraten, and other deities to form the complex belief system of Iizuna. Iizuna was cast aside by the policies of the Meiji government along with the other forms of Shugendou, and it is now a lost religion.

Comets and shooting stars that left trails across the sky were thought to be tengu, while the northern star that is constantly fixed in place was thought to be an incarnation of Acala. The night sky's movements may appear mystical, but the technique used to predict them, astrology, went on to form the bedrock of astronomy and physics. This can be shown by looking back through human history.

Megumu may well use the tripod she carries with her to observe the night sky. There are also rumors that she beats her subordinates with it as a form of discipline...

Character Analysis

Megumu Iizunamaru was released on December 16th, 2022 in "Festival Prayer: Great Stargazing Tengu Festival." For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Discord Official Discord Server.

Megumu Iizunamaru reveals herself as chief of the Crow Tengu! Despite initial impressions, Megumu proves to be a cunning being, driven by profit and ultimately power for the glory of the tengu. Willing to betray her own allies for personal gain, she will stop at nothing for her own goals…

Except this time around, she’s here to help us out! As a Speed-class Friend in Touhou Lost Word, she can inflict a decent amount of Star breaks, Blind anomalies, and some evasion down to boot.

As a defender:

  • Inflicts blind anomalies with her 2nd skill and 2nd Spell Card.
  • Restores barriers with her 1st Spell Card and Last Word.

As a utility provider:

  • Inflicts Evasion down with her 1st skill and 1st Spell Card
  • Provides party wide Agility with her 2nd Spell Card
  • Inflicts 2 levels of Yin DEF down with her Last Word

As an attacker:

  • A decent amount of Star breaks with her Last Word and 2nd Spell Card
  • Has the ability to be used in Blind break comps, being able to inflict a decent amount by herself.

Story Card Recommendations

(Card recommendations last updated on December 15, 2022)

Spell Card

As with most characters, Megumu does benefit a lot from Spirit Power up, which makes cards like The Witch of Scarlet Dreams and Midnight Tea valuable for her to use. Yin ATK UP cards like Overwhelming Firepower, Redder than Blood, and Mansion of Memories are all valuable tools, with the latter being notable for it being party wide. Finally, to optimize her Last Word’s damage, you can opt to use cards with Yin ATK, preferring ones with Agility like Ordinary Magician

Last Word

Puppeteer and Necromancer functions as her best Story Card option from a damage standpoint. However, Secret Sealing Club Girls is a viable option as they boost the same amount of damage with the former boosting Light bullets and having a Yin ATK stat, and the latter boosting Star bullets and an Agility stat. Otherwise, you can opt for cards that boost damage like Touhou Lostword until then.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

Players benefit most from her 3rd skill, Tengu’s Barley Rice, as it provides the best damage boost with Spirit Power, as well as Yin ATK up. Afterwards, leveling up her 1st skill, Iizuna Heresy, is ideal as it provides her with more buffs to work with due to her ability. Finally, leveling up her 2nd skill, Star Kin, is solid as it gives her more Spirit Power with the self inflicted Blind anomalies while also inflicting more blind anomalies to her enemies.

Character Strengths

Decent buffs with Spell Cards and skills

While her skills don’t provide herself too many buffs on paper, in-line effects on attacks like her 1st Spell Card provide her more buffs to be used properly.

Decent Blind and Star breaks

She can inflict a decent amount of Blind anomalies with her 2nd skill and 2nd Spell Card, whilst also having the ability to break them with her 1st Spell Card. At the same time, she can inflict some decent Star breaks with her 2nd Spell Card and Last Word.

Character Weaknesses

Low damage

Unfortunately, despite her buffs, Megumu struggles to output a great deal of damage with her Yin ATK, lack of relevant killers, and only one line with Slicing scaling to boot.

Utility is lacking

One major thing that holds her back is her lack of true utility for the party with her skills. Her main source of utility comes from her Spell Cards which don’t hold too many strong buffs aside from barrier restoration with her 1st Spell Card and Last Word.
