Yuudachi
Expand
Yuudachi (a Touhou LW original) refers to a rain shower that falls on a summer afternoon. This is an apt temperament for Mike, a descendant of a legendary maneki-neko who beckoned a certain feudal lord into Goutoku Temple. Mike is endowed with Metal Phase, as she brings in fortune, and Star Essence, since inviting either money or customers would lead to the detriment of the other.

The cold and silent Metal Phase resists Earth Phase, because earth bears metal, but it is weak to Fire Phase, because fire refines metal.

The diverse and uncooperative Star Essence resists the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence, but it is weak to the charming and arrogant Sun Essence.

Character Shots

Mike Goutokuji's Spread Shot (a Touhou LW original). An attack that attracts money or customers, but she probably uses this one to attract customers. Bullets are a great way to lead someone to a specific place, and they can also be used for security, so it's two birds with one stone.

Mike Goutokuji's Focus Shot (a Touhou LW original). An attack that attracts money or customers, but she probably uses this one to attract money. She repels disasters and attracts good fortune. This is an ideal way of business that applies to everything from bean-throwing oni exorcisms to insurance. But doesn't this method mean that someone else gets the short end of the stick?

Mike Goutokuji's Spell Card. An attack that beckons her target to a market. Whether it is a regular market or a black market, it doesn't matter to Mike. It is a maneki-neko's nature to jump into any market and invite people regardless. This is what she does, and that will never change. She will lead customers with her bullets of booming business.

Mike Goutokuji's Spell Card. An attack that beckons good fortune. Business always carries risks. When unlucky, you might not be able to achieve various goals, or in some cases, you may even be robbed. It would be nice to do business happily every day, free from all such worries. Maneki-neko are imbued with these kinds of wishes.

Mike Goutokuji's Last Word (a Touhou LW original). An attack that creates a rainbow after the rain. Mike's ancestor must have beckoned a human into the temple because they thought some sort of trouble would befall them. This act unintentionally saved this human from disaster. Moreover, the person this cat rescued was a feudal lord, who later donated lots of money to the temple in gratitude. Of course, this also greatly improved the living conditions of the cat. It was a win-win-win result for the person, the temple, and Mike's ancestor. Winning in business does not always have to be at someone else's expense. Rain will eventually clear away, and there will be a rainbow afterward. Mike's life circumstances aren't unhappy or unfortunate at all. That's why she talked to the humans during the disturbance with the Ability Cards... And everyone knows what happened next.

Character Ability

Capable of beckoning in money or customers
Expand
Mike Goutokuji's ability as a maneki-neko. It is said that her ability to invite either money or customers and drive the other away is the imperfect form of a maneki-neko's ability.

Attracting customers and increasing the average expenditure of each customer are essential concepts that form the basis of any business. The more customers you attract and the more they pay, the higher your profits. However, it is not easy in business to attract more customers and increase sales per customer simultaneously. It is not uncommon for one to go down when the other goes up. The former requires advertising expenses, and the latter involves research and development expenses. It would be unfortunate if the profits did not improve after paying these expenses, right? Maneki-neko are a magical sales promotion method that targets and invites customers who spend more money. It is also called targeted advertising. But Mike cannot do this.

She takes it easy and repeats her usual fluctuating business methods. When many customers come, the amount spent by each customer decreases, and when she puts high-priced items on the shelves, few people will buy them. She may also have a sale once in a while. However, although the high volume of sales at low margins may look glamorous, the overall profits are markedly average.

The maneki-neko at Goutoku Temple are all white cats that do not carry koban (oval gold coins). Mike seems to have had a difficult experience at Goutoku Temple because she was born a calico cat. However, Mike didn't let that get to her and learned the art of attracting customers on her own. She has now become a picture of the most commonly seen maneki-neko in Japan―a calico cat carrying a koban. There are theories that a maneki-neko's right hand attracts money and the left attracts customers, and it is also said that a maneki-neko who raises both hands brings bad luck. However, in Mike's case, the one she doesn't beckon is driven away, so perhaps she is self-taught in this area.

It is generally said that maneki-neko originated from how cats were seen as lucky animals because they help exterminate rats that eat rice and silkworms. However, there is a different legend about the maneki-neko of Goutoku Temple. A cat is said to have beckoned a certain feudal lord to take shelter from the rain, which protected him from lightning strikes. Thanks to this founding maneki-neko, Goutoku Temple received a large donation and became the large and successful temple it is today. That maneki-neko was indeed a cat of good fortune that brought in luck.

Character Analysis

Mike Goutokuji was released on October 12, 2022 in "Festival Prayer: Miner, Market & Money." For more up-to-date analysis, be sure to visit the Discord Official Discord Server.

What’s not to love about Mike Goutokuji? Heading up the cast of Touhou 18, Mike is the first to appear to our protagonists looking to resolve the Ability Cards incident…by immediately trying to trade with them. This charming maneki-neko is an upgrade to your traditional kappa shopkeeper, with her ability to bring good fortune to their owners. Her magnetic ability to draw money in for businesses translates into a Metal-focused Support Friend in Touhou LostWord who brings fortune to her allies in battle.

When it comes to team support, Mike is no slouch. She has the ever useful Team Spirit P up on her first skill, Mike's Stall which doubles up with Evasion Up for everyone. Her third skill, Maneki-Neko Business can be used to boost your team’s Yang ATK and Crit ATK, giving them greater stopping power in matches. Her second skill, Self-Taught Promotion boosts her own Spirit P while also giving her the Quick status, ensuring her buffs land before anyone else makes a move. Boosting with Mike also provides an additional level of Evasion for each point she invests on that turn.

This segues perfectly into her Spell Cards, which also drop useful buffs. Her first Spell Card, Beckon Sign: Bullet Business Boom locks everyone onto target with team wide Accuracy and Evasion up. Her Last Word, No Rain, No Rainbow further boosts team Yang ATK and DEF, while providing them even more Evasion, just to rub your pending victory in those wounds you’ll definitely be inflicting. Finally, with every Graze Mike makes in her turn, all allies will see their Crit ATK boosted by an additional level.

Mike is also decent for Metal breaks, with 3 lines on each of her first (Single Target) and second (AoE) Spell Cards. These also come with 3 lines of Star each, although getting them to hit on AoE requires a 2P investment minimum (small issue if you keep her well stocked). Her Last Word comes with a balanced 2 Metal / 2 Water / 2 Sun loadout, skewing her breaking ability towards a more rainbow focused aesthetic (Rain on a Sunny day = Rainbows. Get it?). Her Focus and Spread Shots deliver even more solidly on this theme, with an assortment of Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth on them both. Her Focus Shot also hits Metal at 0P, great for whittling away at Metal barriers. Is she just throwing coins at people until they break?

Anomaly-wise, Mike can inflict up to 3 barriers worth of Burn with her second Spell Card. Don’t expect too much from it though, as the rates of burn are only 100% on her 6th bullet line, while her 4th and 2nd lines have decreasing rates (75% and 50% respectively). This can technically be capitalized on with her Focus Shot breaking Burn barriers at 2P, although would certainly make for an awkward style of play. Her Last Word can also break all Freeze barriers at 3P, but requires someone to be present to inflict them in the first place.

Yang focused teams will benefit from having this cat of fortune on their side. Be sure to bring some Ability Cards (or Sealed Crystals) with you if you’re looking to win her heart over!

Story Card Recommendations

(Card recommendations last updated on July 12, 2023)

Spell Card

With a lot of potential locked behind access to Spirit P, The Witch of Scarlet Dreams is a great card to drop on her to help boost her reach for Elements or Anomaly setting and breaking. If you’re looking to boost her regular damage, consider going with Congress of Sages or Puppeteer and Necromancer, both of which boost Light damage, which make up all of her first two spellcards.

Last Word

Being fully comprised of Liquid bullets, Resort Stars is a clear winner, boosting her Last Word damage by 50% while also raising Yang ATK by 2 levels. Froggy Hat is a decent substitute, with a modest 20% increase, while also providing Yang ATK stats and some Accuracy to ensure she can hit her target. Frozen-Over Gensokyo gives her a flat 35% boost and 1 Spirit P, useful for drawn out battles.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

Her first skill, Mike's Stall takes precedence, with Team Spirit P up helping to perk allies up in battle and unlocking more options. Her second skill, Self-Taught Promotion gives her a further 0.75P, allowing her to hit 2P on Turn 1 to enhance her access to elements. Her third skill, Maneki-Neko Business can then be trained to give all allies the Yang ATK and Crit ATK boosts they need to dish out further damage.

Character Strengths

+ Teamwide Accuracy and Spirit P support

+ Decent Metal breaks

+ Empowers Yang focused teams

Character Weaknesses

- Team 0.75P up falls short of the required amount to hit 2P boosts

- Dilution of elements in Last Word takes off some of her edge
