Character Analysis
Mike Goutokuji was released on October 12, 2022 in Prayer: Miner, Market & Money Festival.
What’s not to love about Mike Goutokuji? Heading up the cast of Touhou 18, Mike is the first to appear to our protagonists looking to resolve the Ability Cards incident…by immediately trying to trade with them. This charming maneki-neko is an upgrade to your traditional kappa shopkeeper, with her ability to bring good fortune to their owners. Her magnetic ability to draw money in for businesses translates into a Metal-focused Support Friend in Touhou LostWord who brings fortune to her allies in battle.
When it comes to team support, Mike is no slouch. She has the ever useful Team Spirit P up on her first skill, Mike's Stall which doubles up with Evasion Up for everyone. Her third skill, Maneki-Neko Business can be used to boost your team’s Yang ATK and Crit ATK, giving them greater stopping power in matches. Her second skill, Self-Taught Promotion boosts her own Spirit P while also giving her the Quick status, ensuring her buffs land before anyone else makes a move. Boosting with Mike also provides an additional level of Evasion for each point she invests on that turn.
This segues perfectly into her Spell Cards, which also drop useful buffs. Her first Spell Card, Beckon Sign: Bullet Business Boom locks everyone onto target with team wide Accuracy and Evasion up. Her Last Word, No Rain, No Rainbow further boosts team Yang ATK and DEF, while providing them even more Evasion, just to rub your pending victory in those wounds you’ll definitely be inflicting. Finally, with every Graze Mike makes in her turn, all allies will see their Crit ATK boosted by an additional level.
Mike is also decent for Metal breaks, with 3 lines on each of her first (Single Target) and second (AoE) Spell Cards. These also come with 3 lines of Star each, although getting them to hit on AoE requires a 2P investment minimum (small issue if you keep her well stocked). Her Last Word comes with a balanced 2 Metal / 2 Water / 2 Sun loadout, skewing her breaking ability towards a more rainbow focused aesthetic (Rain on a Sunny day = Rainbows. Get it?). Her Focus and Spread Shots deliver even more solidly on this theme, with an assortment of Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth on them both. Her Focus Shot also hits Metal at 0P, great for whittling away at Metal barriers. Is she just throwing coins at people until they break?
Anomaly-wise, Mike can inflict up to 3 barriers worth of Burn with her second Spell Card. Don’t expect too much from it though, as the rates of burn are only 100% on her 6th bullet line, while her 4th and 2nd lines have decreasing rates (75% and 50% respectively). This can technically be capitalized on with her Focus Shot breaking Burn barriers at 2P, although would certainly make for an awkward style of play. Her Last Word can also break all Freeze barriers at 3P, but requires someone to be present to inflict them in the first place.
Yang focused teams will benefit from having this cat of fortune on their side. Be sure to bring some Ability Cards (or Sealed Crystals) with you if you’re looking to win her heart over!
Story Card Recommendations
(Card recommendations last updated on October 12, 2022)
Spell Card
With a lot of potential locked behind access to Spirit P, The Witch of Scarlet Dreams is a great card to drop on her to help boost her reach for Elements or Anomaly setting and breaking. If you’re looking to boost her regular damage, consider going with Congress of Sages or Puppeteer and Necromancer, both of which boost Light damage, which make up all of her first two spellcards.
Last Word
Being fully comprised of Liquid bullets, Resort Stars is a clear winner, boosting her Last Word damage by 50% while also raising Yang ATK by 2 levels. Froggy Hat is a decent substitute, with a modest 20% increase, while also providing Yang ATK stats and some Accuracy to ensure she can hit her target. Frozen-Over Gensokyo gives her a flat 35% boost and 1 Spirit P, useful for drawn out battles.
Character Skill Level Up Recommendations
Her first skill, Mike's Stall takes precedence, with Team Spirit P up helping to perk allies up in battle and unlocking more options. Her second skill, Self-Taught Promotion gives her a further 0.75P, allowing her to hit 2P on Turn 1 to enhance her access to elements. Her third skill, Maneki-Neko Business can then be trained to give all allies the Yang ATK and Crit ATK boosts they need to dish out further damage.
Character Strengths
+ Teamwide Accuracy and Spirit P support
+ Decent Metal breaks
+ Empowers Yang focused teams
Character Weaknesses
- Team 0.75P up falls short of the required amount to hit 2P boosts
- Dilution of elements in Last Word takes off some of her edge
- Evasion tanking is less reliable compared to barrier recovery
