Character Analysis
The Ultimate, Absolute Secret God, Okina Matara, is one of the sages of Gensokyo, and is a composite of so many gods it’d make your head spin. In short, Okina herself stayed hidden and kept a low profile until one day, she decided that she simply had to make a dramatic entrance to the public limelight once more, leading to the plot of Hidden Star in Four Seasons. That's essentially Okina in a nutshell - she claims to be a secret god, but she's actually an enormous braggart and show-off. She's got the power to back it up too - with the abilities to manipulate life energy (to the extent where she can even give birth to youkai, such as Aunn Komano), and create doors on the back of anything (essentially, an unlimited teleportation ability), she's a force to be reckoned with and an A+ Tier Friend.
For farming purposes, Okina is far from ideal. Whilst her Last Word, Fantasy Simulation Hypothesis, is All targeting and does have good potential, it is cursed with inconsistency. Okina’s primary source of Accuracy, her second skill Life Energy Manipulation, has only a 80% chance to give her 2 levels of Accuracy UP, and a 20% chance to give only 1 - and she needs it too, given the lower accuracy in exchange for a higher crit rate. It’s also shackled by a 1-1-3 layout leading to low damage, though Divine Spirits, Youkai, Humans, and Fairies Killers help to patch this up. Lastly, it’s also primarily Star, which is a double edged sword - Star tends to be a commonly shared weakness in stages with multiple enemies, but any Star resistance will completely ruin her ability to farm.
For harder fights, Okina is a reasonably solid CRIT attacker and supporter for units with Killer or are CRIT focused with a punch of her own. Her All targeting Last Word, Fantasy Simulation Hypothesis, is perfectly suited for longer fights - between a 1-1-3 layout and a heavy amount of CRIT damage, if given the time to setup that she needs she can do a rather high amount of damage, especially against Divine Spirits, Youkai, Humans, and Fairies due to the Killers on the first bullet. Unfortunately she is somewhat reliant on a future (and farmable) Story Card for her maximum potential damage, but still packs a large punch currently if given a few turns to set up.
As for her team support: Her first Spell Card, Back Sign: Halo of the Secret God, patches up the biggest weakness of CRIT teams by providing her entire team with 2 levels of Accuracy UP for 2 turns - just watch out for the low turn count. Only 2 turns can be a pain at times, but it can allow units to extend their Accuracy buffs as well, if their buffs only have 1 turn left when Okina uses this Spell Card. Additionally, her third skill, Back Door Opening, provides the whole team with 2 levels of CRIT ATK UP for 2 turns - whilst Killer-heavy attackers tend to appreciate CRIT ATK UP more, it doesn’t go to waste on dedicated CRIT attackers either. Her Character Ability also provides 1 Level of CRIT Accuracy UP for 1 turn every time she grazes to the party - which is useful but mostly on CRIT attackers like Okina who have a 30% +- CRIT Accuracy, though unfortunately it’s somewhat at odds with her nature as a attacker who wants time to set-up, leaving her conflicted between using her Barriers for offensive support or to avoid being shot down.
For breaks, she’s no slouch either (even if she is getting rather comfy on that throne of hers). Between a Solo targeting Fire Break for 0 Power on her Focus Shot, Backdraft, and a well above average 1/2/2/4 Solo targeting Fire Breaks on her second Spell Card, Hidden Spring: Magician of Abnormal Falling Petals, she’s one of the best Fire breakers in the game. She also has a below average number of All targeting Star Breaks on Back Sign: Halo of the Secret God, at 0/1/1/2 Breaks for 0/1/2/3 Power. Lastly, if you’re not opting to use it for damage, Fantasy Simulation Hypothesis has an extremely above average 3 All targeting Star and Earth Breaks for 3 Power.
Overall, Okina’s a Friend who’ll provide CRIT damage and Fire Breaks in spades. She can be a bit inconsistent, especially without time to setup, but when she’s given the time she needs to set up a show, she’ll leave your foes with a performance they won’t ever forget.
Story Card Recommendations
(Card recommendations last updated on July 13, 2023)
Spell Card
Okina’s Spell Card decisions will depend on what her role is in the fight. If you’re using her as an attacker first and foremost, she’s going to want at least one Yang ATK UP Story Card, as well as CRIT Accuracy UP to boost her consistency, damage, and preserve the CRIT Accuracy UP from her Character Ability. The order you use these Cards in matters a lot - you need to lead with the Yang ATK UP Story Card (and ideally avoid grazing on turn 1), then use a Spell Card with CRIT Accuracy UP attached. Okina will have to use her Last Word on the third turn after using the Yang ATK UP Story Card, or otherwise be given Yang ATK UP from a teammate, or otherwise her damage will plummet. This is because CRIT Accuracy UP buffs from Story Cards only last for 2 turns, forcing this juggling act. You also have to make sure that you use her first Spell Card, Back Sign: Halo of the Secret God, at least once but ideally twice before her Last Word, due to the Accuracy UP lasting only 2 turns.
If she’s going to go for Breaks, just give her enough Spirit Power UP to get all the breaks she needs.
For stat sticks, look to anything that provides Yang ATK.
Last Word
Okina’s best choice depends - for farming, look to Accuracy UP first (preferably 3 levels UP, such as with a MLB Valued Tools of the Trade), and then Yang ATK UP if Accuracy isn’t enough (just keep in mind she’ll take a consistency hit compared to other farmers). For harder fights, you can't really beat The Secret God of the Sky, which is both a selfie and provides her a fantastic amount of Heavy DMG UP. Failing that, budget options include Yang ATK UP and Earth DMG UP.
If you're willing to take a tiny consistency hit, The Secret God of the Sky is also a fantastic option for farming, it just will introduce the occasional failure here and there due to very unfortunate RNG rolls.
Character Skill Level Up Recommendations
Firstly, level up Life Energy Manipulation to 10, as the extra Spirit Power it provides is the greatest possible damage boost in her kit for farming. Then, Back Door Opening is useful both for farming and harder fights, and should be leveled up to 10 for the extra level of CRIT ATK. Mental Energy Manipulation can be saved for when you feel like it or Okina gets a Fantasy Rebirth, as it already provides one barrier at level 1 and the Yin ATK is almost entirely useless for her.
Character Strengths
+Very high damage potential in longer fights
+Abundance of Barrier Breaks, including P0 Fire on a Basic Shot
+Solid CRIT and Killer support
+Star Element is a nice aid in farming event stages with one boss, as Star weakness is relatively common.
Character Weaknesses
-Somewhat inconsistent due to CRIT based nature
-Reliant on (very common) Killers. She does a ton of damage with them, but watch out for the rare enemies who dodge them.
