Nihonbare (a Touhou LW original) can also be read as Nipponbare and refers to clear skies with not a cloud to be seen. This temperament is an accurate description for Sunny Milk, the fairy of sunlight. Sunny Milk is endowed with Fire Phase, from her bright and cheerful personality, and Sun Essence, since she is (somehow) the leader of the Three Fairies of Light.

The formless and passionate Fire Phase resists Wood Phase, because wood feeds fire, but it is weak to Water Phase, because water dampens fire.

The alluring and arrogant Sun Essence resists the diverse and uncooperative Star Essence, but it is weak to the cooperative and indecisive Moon Essence.

Sunny Milk's Spell Card. She shoots out a huge number of intense light bullets all at once. Sunlight is not the only thing the sun pours down on the earth. Sometimes, it sends charged particles with incredible heat and mass to the earth's atmosphere and the moon's surface. Sunny Milk probably doesn't know anything about this though.

Solar Storm

Sunny Milk's Last Word (a Touhou LW original). A bullet hell attack of light bullets and powerful lasers. On rare occasions, the sun can create intense storms. These storms of light and particles are said to cause tremendous damage if they reach the earth's surface. There is no way for Sunny Milk to know this, but she could probably unleash at least one shot with the same amount of power.

Sunny Milk's ability might not sound like much at first, but it should not be underestimated. Reflecting light can change what people see, so she can use it to hide herself―a perfect ability for a prankster. She can also observe situations from the shadows without revealing herself and make people see things that do not actually exist. She even used this ability to avoid a light bullet from a formidable foe once. However, lights are still waves in the end, so this ability cannot stand up against someone who can interfere with waves... It can also be easily detected in certain conditions, like when it is raining.

When inflicted by Barrier Status: Paralyze or Blind, inflicts the same Barrier Status to target.

Character Analysis

Sunny Milk is the proud leader of the “Three Fairies of Light,” working with her partners Luna Child and Star Sapphire to cause mischief throughout Gensokyo. She often cooperates with other fairies in order to prank other humans, utilizing the spiritual abilities all fairies possess. Just as her team title and name suggest, Sunny Milk specializes in manipulating the flow of light. Being out in the sun strengthens the light she can refract from herself or absorb for more offensive capabilities. She especially enjoys to bend sunlight and hide herself from the view of others so she can hide away after a prank.

Sunny Milk does not offer many abilities for farming, as her Last Word is a relatively weak Solo-target attack, and she lacks both ATK UP and Spirit Power UP. Don’t expect her to sweep a stage, let alone on Lunatic.

For challenging fights, Sunny Milk really only offers a few Sun breaks. Her first spell card, Sun Sign: Aggressive Light, can give one extra Sun break at 2 Spirit Power to a single target and her second spell card, Sunlight: Sunshine Blast, only has 1 Sun break that hits all targets. Her Last Word, Solar Storm, only boasts 2/3 Sun breaks at 2/3 Spirit Power. Otherwise, her normal shots have 1 Sun break at 3 Spirit Power, making them inconvenient to spam for elemental breaks. Everything else in Sunny Milk’s kit focuses on using her light manipulation to decrease the target’s Accuracy or CRIT Accuracy, which is a rather niche stat to target.

The only other thing that stands out is the Blind Barrier status that can be inflicted by Sunny Milk’s first skill, Smokescreen, which can be taken advantage of by other Friends that can break Blind barriers. Unfortunately, that and her below-average amount of Sun breaks is all Sunny Milk can provide. At the very least, she stands out as a brave fairy leader for her friends to look up to.

Extra Spirit Power is mainly necessary to obtain the 2nd Sun break from Sun Sign: Aggressive Light and the normal shot Sun breaks if they’re really needed. Increasing Accuracy can prove to make Sunny Milk’s spell cards and Last Word hit more often due to her kit having no other ways to increase Accuracy.

Valued Tools of the Trade

Sunny Milk has no innate source of accuracy and thus, it is generally recommended to give her an ACC UP card to make up for it. The damage output will remain low, but at least the damage is consistent.

Character Skill Level Up Recommendations

Smokescreen is the only skill that stands out from the others due to inflicting a Blind barrier. Levels 2 to 9 will give it an additional 10% chance to add a second Blind barrier, with Level 10 reducing the cooldown from 4 to 3 turns. Sunny Milk’s other 2 skills are rather underwhelming and don’t need to be focused on unless you really want to increase her chances of an extra Accuracy or CRIT Accuracy level DOWN.
