Character Analysis
R8 Youmu Konpaku was released on September 24th, 2021 in Ultra Festival: Mysterious Sword Master.
The Mysterious Sword Saint, this version of Youmu Konpaku hails from a world which seemingly entirely revolves around the Netherworld. Those from otherworlds are abducted by some force and brought to the Hakugyokurou Arena, where they are forced to do battle for their lives once the bell in the middle tolls, to appease the Saigyou Ayakashi. Youmu’s duty is to facilitate this, and to slice down the losers so that their life force may be fed to the tree. As much as she hates this duty, she has gotten very good at swordplay over the many years spent watching the arena alongside the Yuyuko Saigyouji of her world. So good, in fact, that she’s an S+ Tier Friend.
For farming purposes, Youmu possesses an extremely potent All targeting Last Word which deals a tremendous amount of damage (much more than you would expect from a 1-2-2 layout) - with a rather strange elemental distribution. To a extent, this isn't an enormous problem - it's rather Metal heavy, so you can consider Metal to be the weakness/resistance for her to watch out for, and her passive does at least partially mitigate the damage penalty that enemy resistances incur. Still, it’s worth keeping in mind her effective farming damage isn’t quite as high as the raw numbers might suggest since she’ll pretty much always run into at least one foe resisting at least part of her damage in multi-enemy scenarios - but it’s still extremely high even with that in mind, and she should be able to handle just about any Lunatic difficulty event stage. For boss farming, she can do both Chapter 3 Act 1 and Chapter 3 Act 2’s farms, single handedly at that - but it requires manual play.
Solo Stage Farms: 2-7-1, 3-3-3, 3-6-3, Future Story Card Stage
For harder fights, the Mysterious Sword Saint has one job in mind: cut down all who stand before her with the devastatingly powerful All targeting Combined Sword - Cherry Blossom in Full Bloom, one of the most damaging Last Words in the game. It already has the previously mentioned 1-2-2 layout that makes it stand out in harder fights, but it also possesses a great 80/140/100/100/120/120% Slicing, which means 80 to 140% (depending on the bullet) of Youmu’s Agility will be factored in for damage calculations. Due to the tremendous amount of ATK UP and AGI UP that she possesses, this results in a Last Word which deals some of the highest damage in the game.
The half-phantom’s damage output doesn’t end there though. With the extremely high ATK and AGI UP from her skills, which also have 3 turns of duration on top of her Spell Cards having 3 turns of ATK and AGI UP as well to refresh them, the Sword Saint can use her Spell Cards to inflict damage even before she uses her Last Word. They also possess rather great Breaks. In total, for her attacks: Dream Thrust features 1 Solo targeting Metal Break for 0 Power, making it a spammable way to perform Metal Breaks. Additionally, Origin Mystery: Sohaya-Roukanken features 3 Solo targeting Fire and Metal Breaks at 3 Power total (meaning it will usually have at least one or more targets to have 3 Breaks against, sometimes even 6). It also has Incineration, but Burn barriers are rare and you typically don’t want to break them. Lastly, Origin Mystery: Raikiri-Hakurouken features 3 All targeting Wood and 3 Metal Breaks for 3 Power - which as always, is a fantastic spread to have on an All targeting Spell Card, since it increases the chances of getting more Breaks out of it. It also possesses Discharge, which can be potent when paired with Paralyze inflictors. As an addendum, her Last Word also features 2 Fire, 2 Metal, and 2 Wood Breaks at 3 Power, should you ever decide to use it to Break rather than do damage.
There is one flaw to the Sword Saint - she’s purely a selfish damage dealer, so the only way she’ll be supporting her team is by Breaking. Still, hard to argue with how much damage Youmu does - just make sure not to be alone near her when any bells ring. She might decide it’s time for a fight just out of habit, and you don’t want to be on the other end of her swords! She's so powerful, she even cut her skill names in half...
Her secondary effect chances and Slice values are as follows:
Phenomena Slash:
Chance for Agility UP: 30%/0%/0%/0%/50%/0%
Dream Thrust:
Slice: 15%/0%/0%/0%/20%/25%
Origin Mystery: Sohaya-Roukanken:
Slice: 30%/0%/15%/25%/0%/40%
Origin Mystery: Raikiri-Hakurouken:
Slice: 20%/15%/15%/30%/30%/50%
Combined Sword - Cherry Blossom in Full Bloom:
Slice: 80%/140%/100%/100%/120%/120%
Story Card Recommendations
(Card recommendations last updated on May 13, 2023)
Spell Card
Simply put, R8 Youmu is best off with Story Cards that provide Spirit Power UP, Accuracy UP, or even 50% Slash UP. This is why The Witch of Scarlet Dreams and its Spirit Power increase by 2.00 is a fantastic choice, especially since it helps Youmu handle her somewhat lacking Spirit Power. For more powerful options, Mysterious Sword Master is just fantastic with its combination of 50% Slash and 2 Stages of Accuracy UP. However, this Accuracy boost only lasts for 1 Turn, and without any natural Accuracy, R8 Youmu could really benefit from Ability Cards? since it not only boosts both Accuracy and Agility for 3 turns, but she also grants it to the entire team! Lastly, if you have this as an option from New Year's season, New Year's Shrine Visit IV is great for a CRIT ATK option if you can connect any Killers as well as allow both CRIT ATK and Yin ATK to last for 3 more turns.
Last Word
Not only does R8 Youmu sneak into the Disillusion MV, but she can also make great use of L80 Youmu's Disillusion Story Card due to it boosting 2 lines of Metal by 50% as well as Slash bullets by 45%! As ambitious as that card is, the trusty Mysterious Sword Master never lets you down with both 50% Slash and 2 Stages of Accuracy UP. Assuming Accuracy is already accounted for, then R8 Youmu's Mysterious Sword Master can go neck and neck with fellow 50% Slash card, The Moon and Izayoi.
Character Skill Level Up Recommendations
First, Ti me boosts all three of her offensive stats at once, and as such should be leveled up first. After that, Ra in provides slightly more offensive merit than A ir due to having Agility and an ATK boost, so it should be leveled next, with A ir saved for last.
Character Strengths
Slice and Dice
R8 Youmu may not have the highest base Agility Stat at 1150, but her constant Agility buffs and very high Slice scaling will more than make up for that. In addition, her Yin and Yang ATK stats are perfectly balanced, from their 1600 Stat totals, to their fair share of buffs across Skills, Spells and Last Word, making her one of few units able to get away with containing a mix of Yin and Yang in her kit.
Decent Access to Metal, Fire and Wood
Metal, Fire and Wood feature frequently on Youmu’s bullet lines, with Metal naturally being the most common of the 3.
Character Weaknesses
Ultimate Sel fish Buffer
R8 Youmu is all about buffing her own Agility, Yin ATK and Yang ATK up, all for herself. Unfortunately, this doesn’t do much for her allies, and there are other Ultra Festival Speed-Class Friends that can hit hard while providing more for the team.
Heavily lacking in Spirit Power, Accuracy and CRIT ATK
With no Spirit Power, Accuracy or CRIT ATK to speak of regarding R8 Youmu, she is going to struggle a lot on her own when it comes to keeping her Spirit up, connecting all her slashes, and landing critical hits. Whether it be Story Cards or help from allies, she will most definitely appreciate the helping hand in this form. At least Fantasy Rebirth 2.0 mitigates the Spirit Power issue a little…
Killed by Limited Killer Range
While her mistress has a decent Killer range, unfortunately, R8 Youmu lacking one of those 7 Killers she has made all the difference, as she has Soul, Magician, Undead, Fairy, Martial Artist and Swordswoman, but unlike R2 Yuyuko, no Youkai Killer, and we know that a good chunk of enemies are susceptible to this tag. This alone makes it harder for this vagabond to compete with strong damage dealers, as she won’t be seeing as many CRITs as her mistress.
