Rerolling?

For those unaware or not entirely sure, rerolling in gacha games such as Touhou LostWord is the method of creating new accounts, quickly rushing through all of the immediate or early resources obtained from playing, and then pulling for the most important gacha characters. The re- in rerolling comes from what happens afterwards: if the account did not get the characters or results that they wanted, the account is deleted in favor of restarting the process for better luck. In a game such as LostWord, in which the beginning cutscenes, Prologue, and even most of Chapter 1 can be ran through pretty quickly, rerolling is a pretty easy choice to consider, especially for a newer player trying to jump in on the strong Friends currently running in Prayers.

This article serves to be an up-to-date (as of August 5th and C3 Yukari's debut Prayer) analysis of what goes into rerolling in Touhou LostWord, from the Starting Roll of Fate (game's starting 10-pull) to who should be rerolled for outside of that and how. While there are plently of strong options to go for upon starting off, LostWord is a rather generous game regarding gacha currency and rerunning strong Friends, so it's not the end of the world if you don't want to attempt rerolling. At the same time, especially with the introduction of C3 Yukari, rerolling is just one of the few tricks players can utilize to get an edge over their Friend picks.

Starting Roll of Fate

The characters that are pullable on this starting prayer, while the story cards are also limited on which cards were around LostWord Global's Launch.

The initial part of Touhou LostWord is Remilia's fate roll. You are given a set of story cards and one Friend which you can choose to decline to roll for another set (also known as rerolling) or accept and move on to the tutorial. Below is the pool of Friends you can get in this roll:

Friend Icon Friend Name
L1 Cirno
L1 Marisa Kirisame
L1 Reimu Hakurei
L1 Reisen Udongein Inaba
L1 Sakuya Izayoi
L1 Sanae Kochiya
L1 Youmu Konpaku

However, rerolling is definitely not required for main progression. While Youmu Konpaku is the best character out of the bunch, she can easily be obtained via Exchange Emas, a special type of item that allows you to obtain any Friend currently in the L1 General Pool. With the one you obtain just for logging in, Youmu can easily be ensured without having to grind for rerolls, or you can even just get a better General Pool Friend! At the same time, there runs a campaign by clearing Chapter 1 which gets you L1 Medicine Melancholy, the guide outlining these tasks linked below. Combine this with the free L1 Reimu Hakurei and L1 Marisa Kirisame everyone starts off with, and the player definitely has the ammunition required for basic progression into the main chapters.

For new players, prioritize obtaining L1 Medicine Melancholy from the beginner tasks, and then collect a free Friend from the Exchange Ema for a great head-start, even if a Max Limit Break isn't ensured. To ensure that Medicine is Max Limit Broken immediately, you can always provide her with Paper Dolls, which are given rather generously by the game and ensured every week by completing weekly tasks. Linked below is a guide that assists in explaining the new player tasks, along with a Friend Tier List to show off the better General Friends to go for.

What to Reroll for?

As of the C3 Yukari update, there are 2 major heavy hitters to reroll for: E1 Hong Meiling and C3 Yukari Yakumo. Yukari is an Epic Friend, which is a type of Friend that can practically do anything from offense to defense, with Yukari specializing in support thanks to her skills that remove debuffs and locks in harder fights. Meanwhile, Meiling is a very impressive gatekeeper, prioritizing heavy defenses on both herself and her allies, while still keeping the offense high. Meiling is an Ultra Festival Friend, who compared to Yukari, can be "sparked," or exchanged for after a certain amount of pulls, after 250 prayers.

Going for both in 1 reroll would really be testing your luck (and patience). It's not recommended due to the sheer amount of time on average it would take, but it is doable considering C3 Yukari's Chapter 4 Act 1 Campaign Prayer Rituals do not use Seal Crystals or Coins, conveniently splitting up the resources for Meiling and Yukari into 2 separate piles. However, rerolling for just 1 of the 2 is plenty reasonable, and considering how strong they are, it's worth your time. Upon starting the game, new players get 2 Divine Dolls (used for limit breaking Ultra Festival Friends, which includes E1 Sakuya), and with the current event rerun coinciding with C3 Yukari's release, players can purchase 1 Epic Paper Doll for 150 Rare Exchange Points from the Event Exchange. Use the guide below to read up more on how to collect the doll from the event before it ends!

New Players are provided these new Friends, story cards, Paper Dolls, and many more materials for upgrading Friends and Story Cards for as of right now!

Final Thoughts

E1 Meiling gets a significantly faster head start, with 2 Divine Dolls as opposed to 1 Epic Doll, and Divine Dolls currently have more sources to be obtained from, such as every 25 floors in Scarlet Devil Tower, the regular monthly login bonus, Fortune Dust Shop, and other more limited time sources. On the contrary, Epic Paper Dolls only come from the monthly Fortune Dust Shop update and rare login bonuses.

However, C3 Yukari is almost certainly the current best Friend in the game at her full potential, outranking even her other Epic Friend, F1 Reimu, and still does incredible damage even just with her Shots and Spell Cards, Last Word notwithstanding. Currently, both Global and JP versions of Lost Word have only given out 1 free Epic Doll, and it's unclear where more of them will come from in the future. However, they are also available for exchange in the Fortune Dust shop at the same price as Divine Dolls, which does provide a slow but steady method of acquisition.

Both Friends are extremely powerful and will easily carry you through the early game content, so your choice between the two rerolls is a matter of making a decision between greater payoff over time with C3 Yukari or faster Max Limit Break with E1 Meiling. There are other Prayers and Friends currently running along with them, along with special God Crystal-related deals such as Summer 2022 Lucky Bag, but the two Friends focused on above are the ones that should be focused on for rerolls.
