The final boss of chapter 1, Yukari Yakumo stands in the way of your and your graduation from the first incident. Not only that, she’s also stopping you from obtaining that precious third Errand slot! The fight can be a bit tricky, between her random buffs (such as buffing her evasion, her own defenses, or even restoring her own Barriers) and her powerful attacks. Fret not, this quick guide will show you how to defeat her, and prove to the Gap sage you’re more than capable of handling yourself!

Normal

Defeating Yukari on Normal difficulty is a simple enough affair, depending on if you have access to Moon or Wood Element attacks. If you do, simply attack her four times in total with those Elements - each time you land a hit with a Moon or Wood Element bullet, you will break one of her Barriers. Keep in mind that attacks are all separated into six different bullets, each bullet can only cause one Break, and only one of the hits of a bullet needs to connect to Break. Once all four of her barriers are broken, Yukari will go into a Full Break. This will cause her to take four times the damage - a perfect chance for you to unleash your most powerful Spell Cards!

Some attackers with Moon or Wood include:

If you’re having trouble staying alive with this method, make sure to use Graze! Yukari can only attack each of your units once per turn, and since you only need to last until she’s defeated, it’s trivial to simply Graze once per turn. If you don’t have Moon or Wood Element, fret not. You can still simply defeat her with the power of raw stats - in LostWord, units get a significant damage increase based on their level, on top of the additional raw stats extra levels provide. Just make sure to Graze with much more care - every time the gauge underneath her health bar fills up, she’ll unleash a devastating attack that’ll certainly wipe your team out, and if you run out of Graze to block it - well, it’s Game Over! If you want to do it a bit quicker, you can also Enhance, Upgrade, Limit Break or Awaken your units to give them an additional edge. Finally, equipping them with Story Cards might make the difference! Check out our Story Card guide here for some tips to get you started.

Keep all of this in mind, and you’ll unlock that third Errand slot and move onto chapter 2 in no time!

Hard

Hard is not particularly different from Normal. The major differences are that Yukari gains an additional Barrier, for a total of five, and that her stats are considerably higher. Everything said before about the Gap Sage applies - only, due to the stats jump, you may not be able to defeat her right away, even if you can Full Break the smile right off of her face.

Don’t sweat it too much if you can’t beat her right away - just try again after getting some more levels under your belt. You don’t need to beat her right away either - unlike Normal, there is no special reward for beating her, just the usual chapter clear items.

Lunatic

Much the same said about Normal and Hard applies here too, but Lunatic is even more brutal. On top of gaining one additional Barrier for a total of six, and also having her stats raise massively, Yukari also gains much more potent self buffs - including five stages of Evasion Up.

Since her stats rise by so much, it’s recommended you save taking on this fearsome sage at her maximum power until you unlock at least one powerful Last Word. Since the fight has a highly desirable Story Card that drops at a very low chance, it is recommended you only take it on when you can trivially Full Auto farm her, as you will want to do this stage many, many times, and there is no special reward for defeating it once outside of the usual chapter clear goodies.

Whilst there are many options to accomplish this, a fully upgraded Reimu Hakurei will be able to accomplish the job somewhat reliably with an Accuracy increasing Story Card, although any run in which Yukari boosts her Yang Def will end in failure. Medicine Melancholy can also handle this fight with ease, being able to Fully Break and promptly eliminate Yukari. Additionally, Yuyuko Saigyouji can easily muscle past whatever buffs Yukari might roll, though for consistency's sake it's best to give her an Accuracy card for this fight. Experiment with your roster, and see which combination of units you have that can get the job done!
